I agree with everything you said. I am one of those guys that can execute a smash push shot. The key for me is: I use a crank grip (thumb on right side) and I maintain contact with ball all the way until I release my crank. I get more power on the push shot than any other shot for some reason. I love your tutorials. The secret to all shots is the position of the ball in relations to the bar (spray vs cut back and all in between.). Being able to make the shots and have them go where you want is 1 part of the game but getting the ball and picking the right shape shot separates the men from the boys. Keeping your opponent guessing where you are going to go or do is key. Like you teach with the 5 man. Have 2 shots that in pattern look the same, like the wall pass then angle up.

Agreed, the pull shot is the boss. Back when i played in the early 90s, not many had a great pull, although the few that did were legends. I developed an open handed push shot that worked very well in combination with a pull kick. Not pro level but some guys i played against did eventually play on the pro circuit here in South Africa and it worked well against most. But you're 100% correct. Pros will read a push shot eventually.

I noticed that Ryan Moore is using the 2 man shot quite a bit with good success. KInda dangerous hitting the ball up the middle but if you know where the alley is. He used it to beat speideman in the winners bracket a few years ago.

I'm learning the snake shot and am having trouble being able to move the ball very far one way or another. I know the drill you suggested with 3 balls but haven't had a chance to try it. I don't have a table close by but hope to buy one sometime soon. I started on a duechmeister? and got serious on the brown top "million dollar tournament soccer" tables. 1 goalie. Bank shots, over head shots.

First of great video and thanks Points are all solid and even though i partner a guy who uses a closed hand push shot to great effect as his secondary( cant deadbar but once defenses reverse alot of other options open up that replace the deadbar option) I agree that the 3 bar push becomes ineffcient past bare minimum expert level. However for the goalie position id rather have a good player able to do more than just a pullshot and lane pass to me as a forward. Push shots can spray in to goal especially if opponent goalies are normal defense against a goalie pull. So far watching expert and pro matches i have seen goalies use pushes push kicks and even pull kicks in their series. And ive seen pros get stuffed sometimes using goalie pullshot the most too! I think the variety is good to have on 2 bar.. So i vote keep the push shot on goalie 2 bar. Lose it on 3 bar. Cheers!

Ian Iskandar On the two rod, it is good to be able to shoot it, but it isn’t a high % shot in comparison to the pull. If you are going to learn just one shot, I would learn a pull over a push. If you want to shoot a push, you also have to learn a push kick to make it competitive. So now you have to learn two shots and not just one. That is the point I am making.

You make some good points in the video. However, speaking as a player who first played in 1974-75, the reason push shots are not used more often today, besides the difficulty, is that the push shot from the three bar is less "glamourous" than the pull shot, and now, the snake shot (or roll over). The pull shot has always been the shot that generated more excitement than the push shot, even during the heyday of the push shot. And the same thing goes now with the advent of the snake shot, which has replaced the pull shot as the three-bar shot of choice. In addition, when the Dynamo table was dominant (before the Tornado table was even developed), the Dynamo (or even the TS) table surface was a faster surface, as well as use of balls that did not grip as easily. In my opinion, it was, and is, physically easier to shoot a push shot on a Dynamo table than on a Tornado table.
@ChasePennell
@ChasePennell 5 жыл бұрын
John Ekonomou on other tables different physics apply. BUT I am 100% correct. The spin from a rollover allows for the force needed to overcome the torque you would need with a closed handed shot. It has nothing to do with if it is glorified or not.

Nice job with the tutorials. I applaud the effort. I have some reservations with this one though. As a push shooter I completely agree that dead bar is not an option. In fact, I often contemplate switching back to a pull for that very reason. However, it warrants the debate...."If you can't get around the dead bar, that means the defense is playing long. If Defense is playing long, there are a lot of other holes open." Is that not correct? With the pull you still have short, middle, long and the brush to middle etc....And if the defense starts playing middle, the inherent tendency of the push shot to spray wide actually helps you get to the long hole quicker. I agree that the push may not be as good as the pull. But there are so many positive attributes of the shot, I think it should remain in the quiver.
@ChasePennell
@ChasePennell 8 жыл бұрын
It is and it isn't. Here is the thing. You are basically attempting to cripple yourself by picking a limited shot. You do not have all of the options that you need to win at the top level. Just because you have one long does not mean you do not need a couple versions of a long. But trust me when i say, go back to the pull and stop hurting yourself.

Also, with any shot, I believe the saying goes that "If you're aiming for deadbar, you're aiming for the wrong hole." So even if you can't hit it deadbar you shouldn't throw it out of the mix. I think that all the same options from a pull set are also there for a push: the straight, middle, long, cutback, the spray, John Wayne, push pull kick, half dink, fake John Wayne to slingshot a la Ryan Moore... I think that because some people haven't explored it and it's been thrown out and never given a fair shake. Push shots are my 2nd tier shot, I don't shoot a pull because it's uncomfortable, awkward, and I can't recoil properly like I can with my push.

Interesting video, I'm a fan of tutorials that go over the mechanics of the table and body which a lot of foosball youtube tutorials fail to do. Quick question, what's your opinion on a rolling push shot? I used to shoot a snake shot with decent success competitively (I'm ranked low expert) but I got tired of it since I'd rather have a more interesting / different style of play. I've been shooting a pull kick series with decent success in DYPs and I'm looking to add some options, hence the rolling push. I like it since I can push shot or pull kick out of the rolling push series so I have a lot of options and I get to keep an "unorthodox" style. Of course, the physics of the push shot stays a limitation, but the rolling series opens up a lot of options (pull kick, tic tac, etc), which I think helps offset the flaws of the push shot.
@ChasePennell

I would say that due to the limitation you will find a hard time being very consistent. But hey trying something new is always fun! :-)

While I agree with your assessment, I think the real reason you don't see any push shots is because it's not a popular shot.. you almost never even see pull shots anymore unfortunately... realistically if you're shooting at a dear bar hole, then you took the low percentage shot and there was a larger hole open elsewhere.. IE.. dear bar shot is not at all necessary.. though it is a nice skill to have.. I think a good push shooter could be pretty successful if they were attempted more off the 3 bar... look at push kicks.. for some reason they're probably more popular than pull kicks and don't the same physics apply? (I'm actually not sure)
@Stellarffxi
@Stellarffxi 8 жыл бұрын
I mean dont the same physics apply to push kicks as push shots for the most part...
@Stellarffxi
@Stellarffxi 8 жыл бұрын
also.. aside from torque on the rod, the push motion is easier than the pull motion and the pull shot requires a pushing motion for the recoil in order to hit a dear bar.. where the push shot requires you to end pulling the rod..

one more thing! lol... it was much easier for me to learn a push and push kick than a dead pull from 2 bar.. but perhaps I'm an exception..

No offense but it seems your statements are a little biased, it is true that it's not as easy to get so much force but it still is obtainable with enough practice, though I do not play in the official foosball league I have been playing for 8 or 9 years with the push and is just fine. What I find helps with the push is you sway your body in motion with the shot, not enough to be a distraction but just enough to give a slight whip feeling to your arm. I typically play goalie and shoot the push to the far wall and square it off. Though it may be challenging it's not impossible. Plus body positioning isn't that big of an issue in doubles and all I do when transitioning from a pull to a push is stand closer to the table put my right foot a little more forward than it was but still keeping left foot in front and mainly use my wrist to square it off and my arm for the speed by having my wrist start at a 90 degree angle and letting my arm move and having the wrist snap the ball. essentially making it feel like you whipping the ball helping increase speed and accuracy if your able to square it off. My name is Ethan and though I may not be high in rankings I would like to hear a response back :)

Here is the thing. To compete at a high level in tournaments you do have to let that shot go. It does not have the same speed or power behind it as a pull shot can because of physics. You cannot flex the rod in a way to get the same power. I am not sure where you play or who you play against. But anything above a Rookie or Am Level the shot becomes useless. Truly the physics of how to get power from a shot are not available when you shoot a push. A pull shot you have the flex in the rod that gives you WAY more power than you can get when shooting a push. You become more limited when shooting a push. At the end of the day physics are against you.

As a top push shooter (on the three bar) I figure I'll give my opinion. A square close handed push shot has no advantage over a pull shot. It is much more difficult to learn than a pull shot and from the two bar you can simply shoot the push kick and hit the same holes. The push is best when sprayed from the two rod as it is natural and good zones block most square push shots. On the three rod I've that found an open handed push shot can be used as a legitimate series. The main drawback is it takes a very long time to master the middle and long. I learned a tournament level pull shot (just the execution not the reads) in about two weeks. It has taken me years to get a consistent tournament level push shot. The thing that makes the open variant better is the speed and power. It allows you to square the long (not dead bar) at top speed.

In our city there's only one unbeatable guy and he has the best unprotectable shot - that is long and blitz-fast push shot. Not snake... he has just perfected the push shot. It is his turn-to shot when things go bad. And he is shooting this from defense too. The grip and the stance is irrelevant to him. He reclines on top of the table, head on the middle of the playing field and waits for the hole to appear and the hand-quickness cannot be unmatched. I have won everybody in my country by far, but when he appears and has some trouble, he just sneers and beats me with the push shot.

Lee Murray in Dallas comes to mind. He could bank it off the wall into the corner of the goal. He also utilized changing up his speed on his angles (except for the long angle because that's a non existant shot. Back then I was not great, but I was pretty good. Murray and Mouth both abused me with their push kicks. I understand your point and love the vids. A push kick shooter that doesn't hit dink angles are not using the shot correctly. Maybe it's PTSD of getting mentally broken down in the chess match that is foosball that makes me think twice.

Looking at your form, your wrist snap isn't square.... you are pulling back even when you are pushing..... there is no reason at all to bend the rods when you shoot... let me qualify myself, I played obsessively at home and bars and tournaments in the 70s.... this was before video games existed, foosball was the game that everybody played, my push shot is faster then you can see and so is my pull shot.. if you don't telegraph your shot... and it's a game of quickdraw, it is impossible to block either... by the time the goalie realizes you have started your shot, it is in the hole before his brain can even send the signal to his hands to move, that is why a constant on the move goalie is the only defense.. if any fake is going to work, you have to shoot it for real first to rattle the goalie, then your fakes work... that all being said, for most people a pull shot is faster, not because of torque, a jerk is faster then a pushing motion. But either way if it's a straight up game of quick draw, both are way faster then a goalie can react... it's good to have plenty of variety, but if push comes to shove.... so to speak, use the shot that you hit more often...

Is bad advice, I have seen great players with unusual form.....and go with your shot that hits the most... btw, when you get away from the game, the skill that fades quickest is passing.... Good luck with your endeavors and the tour.. it is a great game.. I would love to see it come back with the popularity it once had..

@@JimHancock I would disagree. No one in the history of the sport has EVER won OS shooting a Push Shot exclusively….. keep in mind the word ever…. The physics of the shot do not allow for it. I know you think you are correct on this, but physics and history prove you wrong. To keep new players from learning something that they would be wasting their time on is the point of this video. Learning a shot that can actually take them far in this game would be significantly better for their game.
