One of my favourite seasons of baseball ever. Man, the 1997 Giants were thrilling.

The last few minutes of that video made me tear up! I grew up in Northern California as a big Giants and Niners fan. I was REALLY young during the Niners glory years of Montana/Young/Rice, so this '97 Giants team was the one where I first experienced the euphoria that sports fandom brings. I remember all of my early teenage angst manifesting itself in that September series against the Dodgers. I jumped off my couch and screamed when Barry hit that bomb in Game 1 of that series, and imitated that little pirouette every chance I got playing pick up baseball with my buddies that year. The next day, my buddies and I tucked Walkman's into the pockets of our baggy jeans with earbuds running up the sleeves of our sweatshirts into our hands, and listened to that epic 2nd game on the radio during and in between classes, updating each other during passing periods. I got home from school just in time to watch the last 4 innings of that game, sweating out every pitch with Rod Beck when he got in that bases loaded jam and then running around my living room pumping my fist when he got out of it. I then took my hooting and hollering to my back deck when Brian Johnson hit the walk off a few innings later. A week or so later, I was at Candlestick with my dad and brother watching the Giants celebrate the clinching of the division. 1997 was one of the greatest years of my young life, and the Giants winning the division that year was the main reason why. To this day, when someone references 1997 for ANY reason, I immediately think of that Giants team.

chabrastamepues this is my experience right here super bowl 29 was cool but I was too young to appreciate it and then the summer of 97 and the team I fell in love with from opening day against the pirates till the last heartbreaking playoff game at the stick I was enveloped with the Giants I would sneak a walkman in school for games that season and hope to get home for the last few innings I remember feeling like that last series with the dodgers was the two biggest baseball game that would ever be played on the face of the earth everyone at my school from students to teachers were talking about it so much anxiety and euphoria all wrapped into one 97 was the beginning of my love affair with the Giants and to this day the absolute best year of my youth

I was lucky enough to have friends on this club, great memories. Dusty is a great Mgr and a great guy.

Not really a very good manager. He choked with the Cubs, Giants, Reds, and most likely Washington.

@@robertridley9279 How about taking Prior out after he allowed walk, Wild pitch and a single in the '03 NLCS. Then in the '02 World Series He Pulls Ortiz with a 5-0 lead. Reds blew an 2-0lead to Giants in 2012 and The Nats should have hired Bud Black as the have since fired Dusty Baker.
@robertridley92795 жыл бұрын
@@alwillk is that the best you can do, come up with three things any manager would have done? He won over 1000 games as manager, he took teams to the playoffs that hadn't been in years. I suspect there's a reason you don't like Dusty Baker that has nothing to do with his managerial skills. You seriously used as an example the Reds losing to the team that won the world series that year, yeah you're not on the up and up
@alwillk5 жыл бұрын
@@robertridley9279 Oh you want me to keep going? Let's see. The Giants had been to a World Series in '89 before Dusty got hired(He was the 1st base coach) the Cubs had been to the playoffs in '98 and won 88 games in '01 before Dusty got there. I'll give you the Reds because they had been garbage, and The Nats won two division titles before he got there. He was gifted playoff teams and choked every time.

Friend and I sat upper left deck Sept. 97 game 1 of the Dodgers series (Bonds' Park dinger). An LA fan during pregame-wearing full-on head-to-toe Dodger blue diver's wet suit w/logo and even the snorkel blue-slowly paradedup & down every single upper tank row from left to right encouraging our wrath. Must've had 50 beers poured on him, peanuts, c.candy, the works sticking to him by the time he came up our row. I gave him big high-10 for having the balls to do that here during the height of the rivalry, one of the greatest and funniest things I've ever seen at a lifetime of ballgames. Johnson's walk-off the next day, deliriously high on the G's that week, heroically big time making new friends outta strangers at the midweek day games all season long in 97.
