As someone born in the 70’s, I just don’t feel as consumed as some others might. I do what works for me and don’t feel the need to own everything… or try everything. So much wasted money.

I was also born in the 70s and I feel the same way. I love beauty products and definitely indulge in that area but I certainly don't buy every single new product that comes out and I don't feel like I am missing out on anything. I just buy what appeals to me and works for me. 😊

Things you acquire actually have spiritual energy attached to them. Beautiful things remind us that life is good. That’s why overconsumption is so appealing to the soul but leaves you empty if you don’t consider the spiritual value of what you’re collecting.

I'm super guilty of over buying; I've been project panning since 2021 and have given away a lot of makeup that just wasn't working for me.... I still have around 35-40 eyeshadow palettes & 20 blushes, way to much for one person, shopping addiction is real and fomo is the worst! Nobody actually realizes how long it takes to use up makeup, 2 years plus for a regular sized blush of every day use!!

I fell into a huge skincare routine in 2016. I destroyed my moisture barrier, oversensitized my skin, and got that orangepeel skin texture on my face. It took years to heal, and to this day, all I can put on my face is Cetaphil. And I paid hundreds of dollars to donthis to myself!

@etherealserenity6043
@etherealserenity6043 28 күн бұрын
@@seabreeze4559it depends how you got it. Your pore size is genetic but excess oil can make them look larger. Excess oil can be from having oily skin or like the commenters experience - possibly them damaging their barrier led to the skin producing an excess of oil in order to try recreate its barrier which made the pores larger. Age can sometimes cause it too. The goal is to balance oil production by removing the excess without stripping. So gentle foaming cleansers, ingredients which balance oil production (e.g., niacinamide, green tea) and keep skin hydrated to prevent the skin overproducing oil (good simple moisturiser that works for you)

I have a curated collection of makeup and skincare products that work well for me (and my sensitive skin), and that's it. I don't think I've bought new makeup except replacements in YEARS. I love having a "signature" look, style, and fragrance. It makes me feel elegant and put together.

I will Google products and still leave with nothing. I would visit the skin care aisle every day and pick stuff up, put it in my cart just to put it back and leave with nothing until I FINALLY bought something. It’s so overwhelming. I think a related topic would be our overall poor health in the modern age. Sugar, caffeine, processed foods and toxins affect our gut health and skin barrier. Makeup and skincare can help our outward appearance but true beauty should come from healthy skin, hair, nails, IMO. A secondary topic is insecurity. A woman who is secure in her beauty doesn't buy as much, the industry preys on insecurities to make a buck. A woman who takes care of herself through good food, sleep, exercise, AND is secure in her natural state doesn't need makeup to feel confident.

Then you get the item & there's the letdown realizing this wasn't so great & you usually find you've already got those shades in your stash. Perfume industry is the same. Fragrances that I had used over many years don't smell the same & they DON'T last but for a short time. This is proven by the manufacturer when they then come out with the "Intense" version. This was an excellent video. What really hit me was the fact that you'll really love a product from these newer brands that seem to be popping up left and right and they have the audacity to discontinue the product that you wanted to be your staple for like (looking at you Merit) this is why I'm sticking with brands that have been around for decades. I really love these old values. Everything was made with care and intention and made to last. You can still find vintage lipstick cases and compact mirrors to this day! I'm working on my signature scent, my signature lipstick color. My mom is a wonderful example of this. She uses 1 eyeshadow from Mac and hits Pan every time before she buys another one. I admire that. I had a signature red Lippie until tarte discontinued the color. It was cheerleader. The best red for my complexion.

I love makeup history!!❤ I am 51 years old and a veteran makeup artist of 30 years. I have seen and experienced many makeup trends through the years. Lol.😊 For me, it was Merle Norman cosmetics, which started in the 1920s. Merle Norman was a great inventor of the cleansing cream, a face mask called Miracol, and their foundation cream, Powder Base. It's a great brand that doesn't get enough recognition. Please add Merle Norman to your history of makeup brands. Also, please try them . I worked for them for 10 years and grew up seeing my mother using their products. Makeup brands use to be passed down by our mothers and grandmothers, even Aunts, sometimes. Loyal customers, even generations, would use the same products keeping companies in business. Love the choices out there, but they can be overwhelming at times. I work in beauty retail and see how this constant treadmill of trends and never ending consumerism is destroying the magic of what it once meant. I am really struggling with the demographic changing and tiny children being manipulated by this huge amorphous blob. It's so damaging to childhood and I see how grown women despair coming to shop whereas before, it was a space for them to enjoy. It has definitely got worse in the past 3 years... I wonder how much debt people are going into to keep up with this insatiable beast ?!

I really love having options, actually! I did go on a bit of a beauty spree once so I could figure out what works best for me, but now I practically only restock a handful of favorites. I do try new things, but I'll wait until a current moisturizer runs out, or I'll restock a few signature fragrances and make room for just a few discoveries at a time.

Really good video, well structured and expressed, though I missed the analysis of the 80's with all those bright colors and I would say you did idealised the motivations of past decades a little too much. Thank you so much for spreading awareness

From buying every new fashion and makeup item in every holiday sale, I'm proud to say I haven't bought anything online or in person this Black Friday/Cyber Monday. I don't crave new things and just use things that work for my skin. Also, now I don't have the budget because it goes to daycare and necessities LOL

As a 40yo guy who just started akincare routine this uear and live in 3rd world country, I am kinda glad that I don't have THAT much money to spend lol. This makes me research into what my skin needs and search for an affordable brand to stick into. Skincare is to care for your skin. Loving how my skin looks like now in my 40 compared to my 20 😅 Of only I knew what I know back then sigh...

I don't get the appeal of having 25 lip products and a 15 step skin care routine or keeping a drug store in my house. But then, I have never used Tik Tok or Instagram, so maybe that's why I don't care about weird trends and hoarding.

It’s the same with overconsumption of clothing. It’s both greedy & immature that women are behaving this way, like we never grew up & still want to play with dolls.

I loved Bonne Bell products and Yardley. I really, really miss Yardley. I wish they would bring it back. I was born in 1958 so I miss all the 70’s products. Coty, the groovy Maybeline eyeshadows, Yardley everything, Flame Glo lip gloss is square plastic, the original Herbal Essence shampoo smell…I could go on and on. The packaging was the best too. I just bummed myself out so I’m going to stop now. 😑😂

So true. I remember when we worried over whether something was the most becoming to us, and its popularity was irrelevant. I used nothing on my face (aside from makeup) but Johnson's Baby Cream and OJ's Beauty Lotion, both now discontinued, and my skin was breakout-free all through my teens. Thanks for another fun and informative video!

Very well said!! I didn’t even realize how often I partake in that fomo culture. I became very interested in 90s makeup a few years back so I bought all the staples and used them religiously and it was the first time I felt so pretty because the colors fit my facial features!! I stopped following the 2010s and 2020s trends because they didn’t suit me and im glad I did so. But of course some products are really tempting just because of the package. But I try my best to think about how it’ll actually look on ME opposed to how pretty it looks in my purse or vanity.

Yup every makeup product i own fits in a small makeup bag: one eyeshadow palette, 3 single shadows, 5 bullet lipsicks that I’m panning, 1 foundation, 1 concealer, 1 eye liner and mascara. I keep a capsule, minimalist yet beautiful wardrobe that I mostly thrifted too. Good for my wallet and simplicity
