I'm blown away by the off season so far. After the Missouri game was probably the most defeated I've ever felt as a buckeye fan just because of the uncertainty the future held. No clear quarterback, all the juniors that could have opted for the draft basically would have had an entire new starting defense. Not to mention everything Michigan accomplished the last 3 seasons. Obviously the most recent moves probably wouldn't have been possible if Saban didn't retire, but still this has been a complete 180 and probably the most excited I've ever been for spring football at Ohio State. Big Buckeye fan and here are my observations. 1) OSU has always recruited well with the H.S. players. They hauled in the no. 3 or 4 class this year depending on which recruiting service you trust or believe. That was no surprise. 2) Losing to Michigan 3 years in a row puts pressure on OSU just like we did to UM during our run of wins over them (which saw them go through 2 coaches and almost fire their 3rd coach after a dismall 2020 season). But Harbaugh turned it around and now we have been soundly beaten by UM 2 of the last 3 season (the 2023 game was close). Considering the pressure Day is under and considering we lost our QB to the portal, and also considering that we could have lost of lot of guys to the draft and the portal, Ryan Day knew he had to react. 3) I am thrilled for Ryan that he and his staff have been able to finalize a great H.S. recruiting class with an exceptional transfer portal class as well. They needed it. That they also managed to get so many guys to come back is astonishing considering how the 2023 season ended. Then again in most cases when a team finishes the regular season 11-1 you would think that's really good. But as it has always been in the Michigan vs OSU rivalry you put so much stock into that game. When you are on a 3-year losing streak to UM it becomes panic time in Columbus. Clearly some serious NIL money is being spent. So has OSU over-reacted? Yes. Have they sold out for next year? Probably, though in fairness some of those recruits -- namely the freshmen QBs -- will not see much time in 2024. And Caleb Downs (S) is only a sophomore so he could play 2 years before going pro. A few of the QBs may ultimately transfer out after spring ball. That is par for the course when you have a deep QB room. At RB Henderson will leave after 2024 and Judkins could also go pro (he could stay for 2025 if he wanted). So they will need RBs coming in over the next 2 years to fill those spots. Their defense will see massive change for 2025 so that will be their biggest recruiting needs moving forward. Should OSU be good this year? Yes. But this depends on how well the KSU QB transfer does and how well the OL does. Are they loaded on defense? Yes. But so is Michigan. In the B1G the 4 teams to really watch will be OSU, Michigan, Oregon, and Penn State. Not sure yet about teams like USC, UCLA, or Washington. Same for Iowa or Wisconsin. Nebraska should be better. As for Alabama, will they be OK? Yes. Of the guys that stay their composite recruiting ranking is still extremely high. Their coach just needs to come in and prove himself. If he does that this year and the guys like him then they will get some great players and should be competitive with anyone. For now Georgia should be the best in the SEC and I'm not sure OSU is on Georgia's level just yet. We need to see if OSU can gel and bring a hungry, cohesive team to each game.

Love the channel and really admired some of the comments about teams over the years getting revved up from their conference rivals winning, and then doing it themselves, as you pointed out. You gave great examples. Also applies to National title rivals - those teams close and wanting the crown. OSU updated portal wins - they will be a beast. I always feel things are cyclical in college football, as history would show, sometimes generational. I'm a Husker fan, so its been a tough 25 years. Its nice to be optimistic as a fan. Our first 2 titles came when I wasn't old enough to know, the other 3 as an adult. Sometimes its just a blessing to have 1. What was interesting about your comment about rivalries, as a Husker fan we had our heart broken every year. Missed field goal and FSU wins in '93, then we win in '94 and '95 beating UF. Then they win. Then we beat UT in '97, and they win in '98. Many years later its still cyclical, and the cream of the crop today is only getting richer in NIL, and transfer. I see it all trickling down first hand in Buford, GA and surrounding schools and now NFL. Should be a great season. Thanks for your great insight and coverage. So much more entertaining from watching a national TV show. Thanks again.

This season should be absolutely amazing for us Buckeye fans. With all that’s going on in our crazy world these days I hope we get that chance to enjoy the amazing success we’ve enjoyed this off-season. There are still a couple of position groups that need some bolstering, but overall the embarrassment of sudden riches at almost every other position is something we haven’t seen…maybe _ever._ I can’t wait to see the competition for this year’s starting QB between Devin and Will, and the one in ’25 that will include Air and Lincoln and Julian. The dual threat at RB this season will be the best in all of college football. Our defense will be the best it’s been in decades…perhaps ever. Our receiving corps will be the best in college football…and that includes the TEs. The O-line just needs to show that they’ve improved year over year and a little extra depth for the long season ahead would be reassuring. We lost our punter to the portal. So, if there are any Australian rugby players out there who’d like to pick up a B1G championship ring…and a Natty this coming season, please send your resumé ASAP to the HR department at THE Ohio State University.

Buying players to come to try and win is what will be the downfall of college football. I have nothing wrong with players being paid a sum for performance on the field from their current university. This is blowing up Joel's theory that college football is better off and more teams than ever have a chance. I called this a long time ago. How can mid-level teams compete? The big boys will just buy their best players every year. Why stay at Nebraska after 1 or 2 really good years (as a player) when Bama, Georgia, or OSU comes calling with a truck-load of money? College football is becoming just a semi-pro league. Traditions gone. Bowls worthless. And players nothing more than hired vigilantes. Just like basketball, teams are completely different every 1-2 years with no continuity and growth. That's what made this Michigan team so enjoyable. 12th level talent that was coached-up and developed over 3 years.

Look how top heavy the sport was in the 4 team playoff era. Alambama,Ohio State and Clemson dominated. And they did that with their recruiting. Since the transfer/NIL era opened TCU and Washington have 1 national Championship game appearance. So its more open in that regard due to the NIL/transfer era and 12 team playoffs should enhance that aswell(look how deep it was this year). While the growth part will be less it also means that the teams which can keep their roster together will have an advantage and that there will be more change from season to season about who is at the top of the sport. If you enjoyed that Alabama can redshirt an 5 star trench guy, play him a little as an sophmore and have him ready to dominate as an junior and repeat that "formula" after the guy gets picked in the first round in the NFL then thats your opinion but most people didnt. And college football has been an semi pro league for a while. Look at the stadiums.Look at the coaches salarys. Look at the TV money. @StandStrong614 this year the wrs need to step up and while I trust Emeka to be the leader I am undecided on how well the others may play, I am hopeful but undecided, need to see scrimmages and at least a couple games to determine if this year's Wr class is going to be elite, good or subpar. I am, however, more hopeful for this upcoming year so long as we get a good Qb that is not afraid to run and can throw it deep.

The only issue I have with Ohio State hitting the transfers and signs the way they have, is the 345 QBs they now have to contend for a single spot. It's obsurd to keep recruiting them. Also causes me to feel bad for our original 2 who had high hopes to make something happen

as an Alabama fan the expectation is definitely to make expanded playoff. But Georgia was already a better program than us the last couple of years and Texas caught up under Sark. So, even with Saban, I think we were the 3rd best team in the SEC. DeBeor will keep us competitive but it will be tougher.

You’re a bum of an Alabama fan, we beat Georgia in Atlanta in 2021 and 2023. Had metchie and Jamo not gotten hurt that championship game likely would’ve looked a lot different. To say Georgia has been a better program? Kirby is 1-4 against Saban, Saban is 7-2 in his tenure at Bama against UGA. They had a subpar Qb in a quarter backs world, brand new OC and DC although Steele has been there before, and a center who snapped with his non dominant hand. And they STILL beat Georgia in Atlanta, played terribly and still took the eventual national champions to the wire, and ended in the Top 5. I don’t understand why Bama fans always think they’re either flawless or pedestrian.

Bama alum and fan. I think a realistic expectation should be to go 9-3 and be competitive and work towards a top 12 (ish) recruiting class. If you go 8-4 and look bad doing it and then your class is number 20 or lower people are going to be upset. With the roster talent I don’t think 9-3 is unrealistic. This year is going to be important for recruiting. CKD needs to show recruits that he can win and be able to sell his vision. If we fall off a cliff then recruiting will too and the entire thing could sink. Long term I think it’s reasonable for Alabama to be a top 15 or better team year in and year out with top 10 recruiting classes. We shouldn’t expect to be number 1 or 2 every year and our roster isn’t going to be the most talented. That said, if CKD can stay in the upper tier of recruiting, attack the portal, and develop kids that’ll stay at Bama (I.e not massive roster turnover) we should be just fine.
@GG-un7hj Жыл бұрын
Buckeye Fan here but I followed Saban and Alabama too. I think Alabama is still a possible Top 5 Team in 2024, maybe going 10-2. Alabama will have excellent DL LBs, still giving them a Top Defense. DeBoer has never coached talent like this before. Watch out!
@willscarborough9089 Жыл бұрын
@@GG-un7hj I think that’s a real possibility as well. Realistically we lost nearly 20 to the portal before Saban left and then like 9 afterwards. Those are the ones we’re replacing bc of the incoming class. Proctor was likely to have an issue in the new offensive system and Bond was probably gone regardless. The big loss is Downs to y’all and obviously depth across the board. We have a deep QB room, extremely talented RB room, still a solid WR core, still solid O-Line. The DL and LBs remain mostly unchanged and the Edge position is one we’ve recruited better than anyone for years. That leaves the secondary as a massive question. If we can go 9-3 and sneak into the playoff then that’d be a solid foundation to build on recruiting wise. Anything more is icing on the cake.
@lexerdaniel4843 Жыл бұрын
Bama will never have a class outside the top 10 again. The kids being recruited today were newborns when Saban started at Bama and grown up watching them win championship after championship. I know people don't want to put out videos on this because it's NICK SABAN. But, Saban has been outcoached repeatedly the last few seasons. They've underachieved a LOT in the last few years. Saban openly came out and said as he got older he's been missing when hiring assistants and coordinators. Alabama has been outcoached repeatedly and have had mediocre assistants. People are not talking about this. If DeBoer is the X's and O's guy people say he is, Alabama could look BETTER albeit with possibly less talent in the short term(Talent will NOT be the falloff people think). 'You measure a coach by seeing the games they won as the SECOND most talented team on the field'. Name me a game that Saban won as the less talented team the last several years. Name me a game that Kirby Smart has won as the less talented team the last few years. DeBoer has proven this. Those two coaches have not. No one wants to talk about this because it's Saban. Alabama could BE BETTER under DeBoer, IF he can get the recruiting even in a top 5'ish somewhere will be elite. People aren't used to Alabama outcoaching them. This is going to be different.
@BrianKellyisGay Жыл бұрын
The thing that seperated Saban was his consistency. He was an elite coach in 2004 and he was an elite coach in 2023. Even elite coaches go through ups and downs but Saban was at the peak throughout many different eras. Other coaches have maybe out coached Saban at certain points, like Urban Meyer, Gus Malzahn, Dabo Sweeney, Kirby Smart, Jim Harbaugh. But none have done it for as long. It’s very possible that DeBoer puts Alabama’s offense at a higher level than it was under Saban for much of his time here. It’s very possible the level of the team, in a certain year or two, reaches the height of a Saban-led Bama team. But as a Bama fan, it’s almost impossible for him to do it at a consistently-elite level for over 20 years like Saban did. At some point his scheme and system will fall out of style, but Saban adjusted his under the current circumstances every time. That will be the difference. Bama could be better next year or the year after potentially if DeBoer is able to replace his success at Washington, but it won’t be on the level of Alabama being penciled in as the title favorite every year for a decade plus.

I'm waiting to see what happens after the spring portal. How many of these blueblood guys end up at Alabama? 15, 20?
@hudsonstovall8119 Жыл бұрын
@@tetoffense7659 Alabama could not gain a single addition and still have potentially the top composite roster in the country. They have 19 players still on roster who were named a 5 star by a major recruiting website. After the exodus, that stat is literally insane. Saban is undoubtedly the GOAT.

U of M has lost 35 players out of their 2 Deep, including JJ and Corum. They will lose Harbaugh and his D coordinator. The NCAA will take scholarships away from U of M and the last 2 recruiting classes were ranked 17th and 15th. Those are the FACTS, not pie in the sky

I don't get how in one breath you can say Saban is the Greatest ever, then list all the top recruiting classes and talent composites he had that didn't result in titles. He had to cry to the Committee and use the SEC bias to get into the playoff this year and still didn't win. Hard to imagine another head coach couldn't have done what he did over the past decade with a top recruiting class every year, top coordinators on his staff, bias in the polls, weak OOC schedule, and a free loss every year.

It’s going to be crazy watching us give this super team that’s self-destructing the final nail in their coffin on a disastrous season. The hole that will cause in the state of Ohio’s economy may send it back into a second great depression.

I have been thinking a lot about the fact that it is hard for play callers to be head coaches. I wonder if this explains some of the struggles that big time offensive minds have endured such as Ryan day or Lincoln Riley. My main worry is that it's difficult for these coaches to give up this duty and trust in someone else and I wonder if that leads to some baggage down the road when you decide who should keep vs lose their job.

Ohio State consistently has the best recruiting classes in the nation and/or Big10 for the last 3 decades!!! I don't know how a team with such talent (over all of their opponents (4-5 Star players dwarf that of Michigan) ever would lose a single game. Again, OSU has the best talent in the Big10 EVERY YEAR!!!
@marlonglenn5514 Жыл бұрын
It also takes coaching and cohesion to build a winning team. We see teams all the time that have incredible TALENT but do not gel. It takes talent to win but it also takes teamwork, discipline, and focus. OSU got spoiled and arrogant which happens when you win all the time. The BIG 10 overall is weak, until the additions, and OSU really only had ONE game that was a challenge.

That's because they are the best at doing less with more. The collect players while other programs collect teams.

I am so sick of Hartline getting so much credit for his receivers. Hands down an elite recruiter but his receivers do NOT play hard nor are tough. One of the reasons for some of the buckeyes run struggles is because his recievers do not block and they simply do not play with their hair on fire. Because he is such a good recruiter i felt like this aspet of his WR play has been let off the hook - Mike Sainistril even said it he said when its a 50/50 ball he doesnt feel osu kids want it as bad - Hartline has built a mega talented room full of divas - and its a reason osu culture and attitude and blocking has lost an edge

I'm on the opposite side of this "hope" for Ryan Day. It's a lose lose situation for Ohio State. The pressure just rose to the highest level for him now. He couldn't beat Jim Harbaugh. Now he has to have 13 million spent on NIL transfers after Michigan is losing it's entire team to the NFL AND rumors of Jim leaving to the NFL as well... So let's say Michigan loses everyone and Ryan Day finally wins the game. The narrative will be "well duh. Michigan lost everyone. It took Ryan Day to spend millions and for Jim to leave for him to win" Then let's say they go to the playoffs and lose. The narrative will be "see, Michigan doesn't matter. Ryan Day can't win a big game". Ohio State legit has to go undefeated, beat Michigan, win the big ten AND win the natty... Or the narrative behind Ryan Day is still that he's overrated and can't win the games that count. So other Ohio State fans can get as excited as they want. I've seen too much. Ryan Day has a weak culture. He can throw the entire bank at it all he wants, and I'm still not sold that he's the right coach for Ohio State. He will have to win the entire thing and go undefeated in my opinion to earn my trust and respect back.
@tetoffense7659 Жыл бұрын
I don't think he's worried about your trust or respect. You're a 15%er.

It’s hard to find Ohio State fans that see through the bs that Day puts up man. Not enough grey hair in his beard to be putting down ego clashes in his locker room, it’s pretty clear for everyone observing that his stuff grows thin very quickly with players.
