As there will be 180 degree phase difference between phases in two phase, they will cancel out each other.

90 degree phase difference in case of 4 phases, each pair of them will be cancelling out opposite pair. And we generally don't need 5 phases afterall, the maximum power that is being used can be transferred in 3 phase. Higher than 3 phases will have more power loss.

@@manojitbag in 2 phase we have 90 degree shift and not 180 Also in a balanced 3 phase as well all 3 voltage sum is zero so we cannot use cancellation of voltages as an argument to support the use of 3 phase

It's more of mechanical purpose. If we see efficiency vs speed characteristics in steam turbine, there's maximum efficiency at speed of 3000 to 3600 rpm. As generators have generally 4 poles , frequency can be easily found out using N=120f/P formula. Take p = 4 and N = 3000.
