Lol, here I am just wondering why I have green oranges when someone gave me a box of fruit they got from local farms. They set up once a month and give away boxes of fresh fruit and veggies to whoever shows up and grabs them...but in the box was a bag of oranges, most of them were either ALL green, with a couple that are an orange green color. I've never seen this before. I actually called my mom and she said she's bought some bags like that before and my dad ate them and said they were fine....so I came to YT to see if anyone has made a video about it... I seen this video and not only am I finding out about the oranges I have, but I'm getting a full history lesson on Oranges and I'm loving it! Thank you, sir. I was not expecting to learn all about the orange, but I'm glad I did!

Thank you for sharing this. I leaned this many years ago working in a produce department of a grocer. Many aspects of fruits and vegetables are unknown to people, fooling them into poor quality foods.

ethylene gas doesn't harm the fruit or health, it's a natural gas that is normally produced when fruit ripens.

I wonder if that's why Ugli fruit are so liked. I tend to see them shown green, or at least somewhat green, kind of like the green orange you showed, instead of the treated orange colour.

Funny, because the Orange’s we grew in Murrieta, CA were always Orange, different varieties with seeds. Now we live in Winchester and our tree had seedless Oranges on it when we bought it. Juicy, normal size and color. This year they were huge, and color is yellow/green… dryer & more fiber, we had less rain than in the past, it might be about variety, water and location where Oranges are grown. 🤔 Also, there is a hybrid Orange grown in Temecula, CA It is an ugly Orange-but tastes amazing!
@allthefruit3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it seems that location, variety, climate, frost, chemicals ... all play a part in determining the colour. Here in Gran Canaria many varieties are bright orange and the temperatures have not dropped below 15C yet

Are you sure that green oranges from Brazil aren't from another variety? I mean I thought it would be normal for fruits to get a red or an orange color when they get ripe, like what happens with some variety of apples too, when they are green they are sour, but when they become a little yellow with some shade of red they are a little more sweet and rich in taste. About the lemons, here in north in italy I saw them green in a supermarket chain they had this variety of green small lemons that came that where labeled as organic and I think they came fron italy. They had a normal taste for lemons,not bad. At the same time I saw near naples during a vacation in south italy I saw a lot of lemon trees, some of them where at the ground in these narrow pathways between two walls, and beyond the walls there where orchards of lemons, so the lemons that we found in the ground must had fallen from the trees so I think they where not treated. I think there many varietys of citrus but we are used just to some of them.

Some varieties get more colorful than others, often just by ripening but cold weather and ethylene are the most reliable ways to produce a crop of bright, uniform color

What about the flesh? Like blood orange, can tropical country produce blood orange artificially ?
@allthefruit Жыл бұрын
Yes, it seems that the anthocyanine which gives blood oranges their colour can accumulate during cold storage in an refrigerated warehouse

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana ... or a ripe orange :D I would buy a green orange. That's a stupid EU law which prohibits the selling of other color oranges. Unfortunately it's not the single one. If I remember correctly the French are still peddling to define the salable bananas by strict size into an EU law. These laws have to do more or less with market protectionism.

I used to do quite a lot of orange and grapefruit harvesting in Arizona and can confirm the colors you mention. Some oranges are bred to bev orange, some get this color by exposure to cold and some by treatment with chemicals
