I worked this past winter/spring harvesting mandarins/oranges/lemon. Here in Spain most of the time we collect the fruit in medium sized black plastinc buckets, then proceed to dump all the fruit in plastic boxes (they can hold up to 20/22 kilos of fruit). We harvest the fruit by hand cutting right in the spot where the little stem conects the fruit to the rest of the tree. Sidenote, Valencias are the worst verity to harverst IMO, the trees are HUGE making it really hard to reach all the fruit real fast. We got paid by the box, the more boxes we make the more we earn that day so we had to do it really fast all day long or untill we fill all the boxes available that day. We also had to load all the boxes into the truck that carries them to their destination, imagine having to build a pallet of 6~8 (20~22 kilos) boxes tall by 3 in the base and repeat it till you load a 24 to 30 pallet truck o_o (of course we had to do this between 4-8 people but it was very physically exhausting)

Thank you for sharing your experience! I have such great respect for the people who harvest oranges. It really is back-breaking work.

In South Louisiana we had a naval orange, satsumas and cumquats. Thing is, come the fall, the satsuma I know would still be green, maybe with specks of orange when a cold snap would hit and they were the best. Plaquemine parish. They grew plenty of satsumas and naval oranges. How they survived after Katrina, I do not know.

I'm glad you also inform others with facts about the risks our plants face. Being from Orange County myself it makes me very sad. My backyard is a nature reserve that almost got taken away from me and my neighbors due to real estate (a bribe was involved). It just gets more and more crowded here... So many beautiful childhood memories that I can always revisit by sitting out there, would have been a shame. I'm sure the owner of the grove has some similar memories with his setting. Anyways there's always hope! We will keep adapting and problem solve.

When I was a girl, I lived in "Orange County Calif." and there were many beautiful orange groves. We played baseball with the unripe ones, threw overripe ones as bombs, and ate every one we could. I can attest to the orange diseases that is happening in FL right now. I have 3 orange trees and requires constant upkeep to keep it healthy. My Cara Cara orange tree (about 7 feet tall) just died last month because of root rotting disease, before that it was devastated by leaf miners, and other diseases that causes foliage die back. My recent orange tree that I was growing in a pot, I went on a vacation for a month, came back and 2/3 of the foliage was devastated by leaf miner, aphids, and fungal disease that cause one of the main branch to die off. So yeah...growing orange here in FL is a huge PIA and requires time and resources to keep it happy and disease free.

Durians grow just like another fruit up on a tall tree.. the fruit has thorns from the beginning and its very cute.. but you dont pick the fruit from the tree.. you wait the fruit to fall down to the ground.. only ripe fruits falls down.. but you have to be fast as many animals like the durians such as hogs foxes squirrels bears.. in the village people usually build huts in the farm to wait for the durians

In the past few years, HLB has had a few confirmed cases here in northern California as well. They're doing their best to track its spread, but everybody has some kind of citrus tree in their backyard and not many people know the risks. We can't transport citrus across state lines, but now it's risky even between counties and neighborhoods. Only a matter of time before somebody brings some oranges from home to a friend or relative in the south and the whole industry is at risk. I heard some orange groves were starting to put up netting around their entire fields to keep the psyllids out.

I love you, Nicole. It's amazing! I have to tell my mom all of this, especially the avocado. Thanks for the videos. They help me get better at English and I can have more knowledge about food. Thank you so much, True Food TV!

The sunburst of colour of ripening oranges under beautiful blue skies, their shiny green leaves contrasting with the white of the first, shy flowers.... What a paradise. Thank you Nicole, for this walk down an 🍊 scented orchard. Very interesting video narrated with such zest!
