I had the same issues with my hispanic family and it’s so tough. It took time but my mom, sister, and abuelita came around and now they’re fiercely supportive. I have some support from a tía and some cousins as well, unfortunately had to cut off a lot of my family. But let’s be honest I don’t like the relatives I cut off so I don’t care about their approval lmao. It gets better and you’ll find amazing chosen family too ❤️ distancing yourself is the right move to focus on yourself while your family figures it out.

Love the way Deison, you recognised the red flags although in hindsight, in your ex relationship. I totally get what Drew says about Pili, as a Mexican and older sibling I relate to being fiercely protective of my family especially my little sister. I also heavily relate to giving anything for my mom as the matriarch and needing a partner who understands that. My ex husband was a white American and just didn’t get that. He had such a weird toxic relationship with his family and couldn’t understand how close I am to my family. Like he couldn’t live without his family despite wanting to, I can live without my family but don’t want to. That was a pattern I dealt with when I dated men, particularly with white men.
