@@Areiviel You should watch dr.k’s content. His work is not profits based. There are people in this world that truly want to do good and dr.k is one of them. I recommend you watch him. People who make content about making your life better are generally very dishonest and profit based so it’s understandable why you would stereotype dr.k as someone who does that. Dr.k does not promise that if you buy his product or watch his videos that your life will be better. Instead dr. K’s intention is to share his perspective on what it takes to live a life that you enjoy living. What he is offering is something achievable for everyone. Not everyone can be rich or super successful but everyone can live a happy life. It may seem that he is trying to make money because he has paid coaching but the coaching obviously needs to be paid for because having coaches talk to people and help them costs money. He doesn’t advertise his coaching as something that will make you happy or something that is better than every other option. He advertises choaching to those who wish for an alternative solution. If therapy is working and if you’ve figured your life out than great but if therapy doesn’t seem to work or nothing you do ever seems to work than coaching is an alternative to try that has helped many people. And yeah, maybe coaching isn’t right for you but there have been many people who went to therapy for years on end with nothing in their life ever changing and then tried coaching and finally started to change the trajectory of their life. I’m not here to recommend coaching, just trying to explain that his coaching program isn’t dishonest and it isn’t meant to make coin off of other people’s troubles. HealthyGamer is a non profit organization made by someone who genuinely just wants to make the world a better place.

Removing redundancy is actually a very important part of good writing. In the case of avoiding redundancy, you're not simply trying to write less for the sake of writing less, you're trying to make sure that you're not labouring a point or being repetitive. Why say something over and over when you've said it already? Redundancy adds words without adding value.

I like the occasional shorts and reels throughout the day but I can also watch a 3 hour stream while giving it the majority of my attention for most of those three hours, and I can also binge watch 10 episodes of something on netflix or rewatch a series that takes all day or even two days to finish without taking a break every three minutes. Consuming short form content isn’t the problem, the problem is exposing kids to it too early and letting them choose to only consume short form content and letting it lead to a preference of short form content over everything else. Just like with everything else in your life, it needs to be balanced.
@thommyavv8905

@@thommyavv8905 I’ve never been a fan of short form content, only started consuming it when it was forced down my throat and I’ve been able to enjoy some of it and kill time. I think it is being pushed on people too much because it is so successful. I think there’s a very harmful amount being consumed by most people. But I also think that it doesn’t really matter because it’s going to be pushed so much by platforms as a way of keeping people on their platform for longer. It’s pushed way way way too much and there’s not yet a way to disable it on KZbin or Instagram which is what I use the most. Creators are being pushed to churn out shorts or else be punished by not having the algorithm suggest them as much. It’s leading creators to make a lot of shorts and lots of times they already know how to cater to their audience and grab their attention. I wish there wasn’t so much of it but I don’t think it should go away completely. I think it’s natural to have a variety of things catch your attention in a day, I think it’s healthy to have a few things you’re spending a lot of concentration on and a few things you’re not focusing on that much. I think it’s good to have a variety so that you can learn to just quickly move on from things when they’re not helpful to you instead of spending your focus on something like an issue you can’t solve and just dread over. I think learning to quickly move on from things is something lots of people could take and apply to other things in life but that’s about the only benefit I see to a ton of short form content. I’d much rather watch a 20 minute video on something I’m interested in rather than 20 minutes of shorts that I have to sort through like playing cards to find something I like that only lasts 30 seconds. Although I guess if you’re spending a lot of time on short form content then the algorithm has a higher chance of showing you mostly things you like.
@alexiswilson4186
@alexiswilson4186 Жыл бұрын
@@thommyavv8905 I guess to answer in a nutshell I don’t think that short form content is unproblematic, but I think it’s biggest issue is how much of it we are consuming, not that the short content itself is the main issue but you really can’t have one without the other because of how much it’s pushed by platforms.

I think you have a good point there. Thinking about it I definitely swap between either shorts or very long videos. I expect a very concise specific point or summary on shorts and a proper story in long format videos or podcasts. I obviously can be wrong but people still obviously pay attention to things for prolonged periods of time,people still watch movies that have been getting longer and longer. Video games are more elaborate and longer. We seem to be very capable of long extending our attention span for longer periods of time. We just seem to be less willing on giving our attention and time to things we aren't interested in because we have more choices.

It's terrifying how true this is. I wasn't allowed technology until I bought it myself. No phone, no computer, no TV(in my room), my brother and I did get an Xbox for Christmas one year from our grandma, with 1 game we had to share with each other on the living room TV we both had to share with our mom, and I do prefer to watch longer form content. I realize this is a short, sure, but of course I'm gonna click a HealthyGamer clip. All 3 of my nephews have their own phones and ipads. I've tried to let them watch KZbin when they come over to my house, I ask them what they want to watch, they choose 20-30 minute videos from channels I watch, 2-3 minutes in they ask to watch a different video even by the same channel. It drives me insane. They're all on ADHD medicine. I personally don't think they need it. They just have short attention spans. I feel a large quantity of people we hear about claiming they have ADD or ADHD are in the same situation. Not everyone, of course, the condition exists. But I've seen multiple KZbinrs and streamers in particular say they were diagnosed, but then we see them play games for hours at a time. They just get bored of things quickly, it's not like they physically can't pay attention to something for long periods. Just an easy target for pharmaceutical companies, yep you have a condition, take our pills. Just my thoughts, from an untrained, non-medical professional, idiot, making broad observations.

Petition to change the name of ADHD from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to EAD(H)D: **Executive** Attention **Dysfunction** (Hyperactivity) Disorder. Those of us with EAD(H)D do not have a total deficit of attention. We do not lack attention span like iPad kids are starting to develop. We lack the ability to sustain attention with tasks that do not release enough dopamine, and hyperfocus on tasks that release a lot of dopamine (but still not as much as NTs experience), as well as struggle with executive disfunction (forgetfulness, time blindness, impulsivity, prioritising, etc.) on a daily basis, which becomes severe enough to cause issues or problems in day to day life (it's not just "everyone's a little forgetful from time to time", it is **every** day). I can imagine there will be an overdiagnosis of ADHD in children that won't actually struggle with EF as they get older (the kids that "grow out of it", never had it to begin with, they simply were normally hyperactive and/or poorly raised children), while there's a shocking underdiagnosis of adults with EAD(H)D like myself, who are struggling, constantly infantilised, and felt ashamed for so many years for not being able to reach our potential. Hopefully the next DSM recognises this, and the diagnostic name and criteria is changed to match reality.

I've gotta push back a bit on the video platform part tho. KZbin videos used to be capped at 10 minutes, but typically wouldn't get past 4:30. While KZbin's capabilities increased to allow for longer videos, engagement algorithms are what changed that, favoring *even* longer videos because it decreases the chance that you will disengage between videos (you can't fit as many into the same amount of time) and watch the midroll ads. Strangely, we can see similar trends for other user-generated video companies, even though most don't have compulsory ads. Vine was wildly popular with 6-second videos but failed because Twitter couldn't figure out how to monetize it how they wanted. TikTok started with 60-s videos but has increased their length you're allowed to post. If it continues, we'll loop back around into old KZbin. To be fair, I see that trend as resulting from corporate interference with virality than from people wanting longer form content. I'd be fascinated to see a discussion on those two opposing dynamics, but that's not what I come to a Dr K video for lol

It's not our interaction with technology that's the problem, it's what we're using it for that is. A lot of us turn to the internet in order to escape or make up for our traumas and stress, but running from something doesn't solve it, it only makes us more vulnerable to it. If we want to escape the habit, we have to heal what's causing us to try and run towards it. A kid spends their whole day on an iPad not because they don’t want to do anything else, but because they feel it's not safe, accepted or supported to do other things. The attention span issues are just a result of being addicted to something (ie, a dopamine rush), which is why we can experience this problem even as adults.

I wonder where the phenomenon of people watching 4 to 8 hour long analysis videos fits in with this. I think its also interesting because that audience also largely overlaps with people who still read long-form blogs and novels. I think it largely reflects the fact that we're expected to give our attention to other people at a moment's notice. I can put down a YT short or tweet a lot quicker than finding a stopping point in a blog, novel, or 8 hour long video. It's kinda scary to think how much shorter KZbin videos have become with the new KZbin shorts. And it's also worrying about how TikTok has taken over and how it is impacting our brains.

Just ordered a bunch of hair products for my baby sis. Knowing she doesn’t know much about styling hair and that she doesn’t like to read a lot, I text her the bare minimum of info to keep her hair from falling out. She text back “that’s a lot of info”. I told her it’s not; she’s just not used to reading a normal amount. Also text her this YT short. lol, I bet she doesn’t watch the whole way through😁

I'm a kinda long winded person with adhd. So I often say or type things that could be shortened somehow. I've noticed these days if I write anything longer than 3 sentences, people will say its too long and not bother. Many people don't have the attention span to even make it to this sentence right here, before saying "I ain't readin all dat".

This makes me want to read a book. I haven’t done that in years. I’ve picked them up and read like the first few pages or listen to an audiobook, but I don’t count that. I tried to read art of war last year, which is not long at all and the only reason it’s boring is because it’s like instructional/informational text. but anyway, I gave up on reading it, and just listen to the audiobook, and like could not pay attention to it for the life of me so I don’t count that either because I couldn’t tell you the first like rule, or a single chapter of art of war. Except for like don’t cross water to get to your enemy.😂

If enough people become aware of this problem, there might actually be hope for the next generation. Maybe I will be able to raise children after all, without the effort I plan on putting into raising them going to waste because of their peers.

it's one activity. engaging with a platform is a singular activity. think about it this way: if they were playing catch with their dad, you'd consider that one activity. what you're doing to social media is the equivalent of considering every throw in that game of catch a separate game of catch. that's not how human attention works.

Yes there is an impact, it's less about how technology's getting better and more to do about how we actually use it to constantly exploit each other. We engineered social media in such a smart yet destructive way that it's now backfiring more than we can profit off of it, now what? Really wish we would have thought about the consequences before actually doing things but instead we keep doing everything for money.... Great.

It is a bit ironic using sesame st as the example, because that show was a 30 minute program full of sketches and skits. The main plot was less than half of the run time iirc, at least in the 90s.

And it’s not just the attention span, I mean the simple act of scrolling alone must have effects on time management, dopamine regulation, social interactions, personal mental health, empathy, personal development and personality to name a few.

I actually like youtube shorts because they're an easily digestible summary version of the real thing for busy people and i don't even endlessly scroll for more like most people do. the real distraction however is the amount of accessible content that we have now compared to back then. There's an infinite amount of stuff that you can do that's its hard to prioritize or keep up it if you don't know what you want to do in the first place.

Honestly, if I'm playing a game, especially a difficult one, I give up after 30 minutes. This seems to be more related to my performance declining, but even then, my performance tends to decline because my attention starts to drift. Either I need a break, or there's another problem too.

I will say the flip side of this is the rise in several hour long deep dives and binge watching, spending huge amounts of time on a single thing vs short amount of time on a huge number of things. And the proclivity to switch between those two modes is literally ADHD. Like, that’s what it is.

It's the other way around. KZbin used to be videos of something in particular and nothing else. Now that videos are monetized, KZbin creators add tons of filler and BS to make the video longer so they make more money.
