I've been a Pacquiao fan ever since I was 14 watching his first fight with Barrera. There's no doubt he became a much greater, more rounded boxer as his career went on, but I'll always have a soft spot for the early Manny, with the all or nothing, kamikaze style. His career really was a great and exciting time to be a boxing fan. His willingness to fight anyone and risk losing, just to test himself, is an aspect sadly missing in boxing today.

Blame marketing. Overpaid pencil pushers spend so long hyping fights to sponsors by the time they actually happen the fighters are past their prime. Because it's not the dozen hits you take at fight night, but the thousands you take in training, that cut your career short. Fighters would be better off if they were fighting, and getting paid, more often. But promoters and marketers don't care about the fighters or the fans, they only care about ripping off HBO, Tecate, Burger King et al with an ever worsening product.

my coach back then before he died was always telling me that if I want to adapt a very unusual style that nobody would ever be prepared, watch a Pacquiao fight. I followed him, even though I was a big fan of the lad since that Lewis vs Tyson fight, I can't appreciate him that much and I saw him back then just as an entertaining fighter.

As a Puerto Rican and fan of Cotto, that knockdown in the 4th is one of the craziest things I've ever seen. Extremely demoralizing, because it was so impressive. You didn't catch the angle here, but Pacquiao was literally jumping up and was IN THE AIR when he landed that short left upper. I highly doubt he practiced that, it was just straight instinct. He is a FIGHTER, through and through. Cotto got on his bike after that. The fight was over.

As a Filipino, I consider Cotto to be one of the greatest of all time. Along with Pacquiao. Never ducked anyone, never fought dirty, just pure skill and entertainment. His redemption against Margarito will always be one of the best fights ever.

For the younger fans, both Erik Morales and Miguel Cotto were top tier fighters and warriors. Even though I was more a Barrera fan, it really got to me when Morales shook his head and indicated he had enough after Manny knocked him down in their third fight. I had never seen Morales ‘give up’.

Pacquiao always came at you & was willing to go toe to toe. Thats why alot of Mexican fans appreciated Pacquiao's style of fighting. Thing I noticed was whenever any of the Mexican boxers wanted to go toe to toe, Manny accepted & Manny was too fast all the time. That's why Marquez was the only one to not only hang on to Pacquiao, but also knocking him out cold in the 4th fight.

In the 4th fight, Marquez punched Pacquiao to the body at first. Which somewhat slowed Pacquiao down or it forced him to cover his body over his head. Which is why that 3rd round Knockdown was just a beautiful punch. Looked like a body punch only to turn into a over hand right hook. Pacquiao though AT THE END OF EVERY ROUND he would come at Marquez with a "right, left ,right combo" that's why in the 5th round, Pacquiao was coming at Marquez & Marquez was getting hit, but he literally smiled at the end of that round all bloody face. Why?! Because he knew what Pacquiao was gonna do. Then last 10 seconds of the 6th round, Pacquiao looked dead for like 2 minutes after that punch to the mouth. Best fight out of them 4. I still have it on my phone. & I'm Filipino.

What I love about Pacquiao's KO over David Diaz is that from certain angles, he doesn't look like he's exerting any force into the punch; it looks like he's just casually straightening his arm. But the accuracy of the punch and timing with Diaz's movement led to a killer impact that ended the night.

Pacquiao capitalized a basic fundamental in boxing that fight. don't commit too much, let your opponent do it for you. Pacquiao was hiding that left hand all night long, he pummeled him with jabs and some flashy combos to frustrate Diaz and force him to shell up. when the time was right, Pacquiao hid that left hand perfectly and threw a perfect cross instead of an uppercut even Diaz was absolutely open for a massive uppercut that moment.

I still remember watching that Hatton fight live. It was electrifying and loud. And after the K/O you could feel and hear the varying murmur of the crown in the stadium as Hatton lay stiff on the canvas. To say the least I was shocked- overwhelmed of many emotions. It was a coronation of Manny's greatness, an event I will never forget.

I remember not wanting to watch Pacquiao's fights when I was a kid. I preferred watching cartoons or anime than watch tons of commercial and little boxing. But I had a change of heart after one day I decided to sit down and watch properly. Then I knew why my late dad gets excited when Manny has fights. During 2009 till around 2011, were the most exciting years for me after I became a Pacman fan. I was 12 to 14 back then. I remember waiting, watching, and cheering for the man. We get sad and disappointed whenever he loses, and celebrates whenever he wins, especially if it's a KO. Those were fond memories I'll never forget. Whenever I see Pacman, he reminds me of my dad and those times we enjoyed the People's Champ's boxing together.

Even in the early stages of his career, Pacquiao was an extremely intelligent boxer. He adapts, changes up his tactics and he figures out how to win. In other words he's always had a Plan B, C, D in his arsenal. Something most fighters don't have. Without those multi-dimensional qualities, his star would have faded long ago and we wouldn't be taking about him right now. Just for challenging killers like Thurman, Crawford and Spence in their prime at that stage in his career, just shows you that Manny was always on a different level.

The way Pacman dealed with top level opposition is legendary 3:06 - this sequence in particular. In the first fight with Morales, Manny was an aggressive pressure fighter. I'm 41yrs old and been a true boxing fan since I was 5 or 6 and god im so grateful to have witnessed Mannys career in full, he is truly a one off, will never be another fighter like him and he could match up against any fighter from any era even beating lots of the greats at 135.him and Roberto Duran at their best at lightweight is just awww my goodness I can't even find the words to describe it.also Manny against Pryor or arguelo would be a gift from the boxing gods. Prime Pac had fantastic lateral movement/footwork and fast, explosive power from all angles, with a high workrate. That he retained his speed and power going from 130 to 147 is incredible. It's little wonder Floyd found reasons to avoid that fight during 2009-2011--even if still favored to win, the Pac of that era was a much tougher matchup than the Pac of 2015 who lacked that level of foot speed and was a quarter step slower with his punches.

Great analysis here, but I'd like to add that few analysts ever mention how powerful and nasty Manny's punches were that belie his size, especially early in his career before he moved up in weight class. While he did break down his opponents with this athleticism and innate skills, what also broke them was that he hurt them early in the match and made them afraid to carry out their game plans. Remembering those early days when he was an absolute terror of an Energizer bunny who kept throwing combinations and flurries all the way to the late rounds, he absolutely had no peer. Marquez got lucky on that blind counterpunch that KO'd Manny, and Mayweather waited long enough for Manny's physical gifts to wane sufficiently, but both would have been beaten soundly had things been slightly different in those matchups.
