Floods, economic collapse, mass protests, political tumult, military crackdowns, an imprisoned former Prime Minister and disappeared journalists - there's a lot going on in Pakistan, but U.S. news media is quiet. Despite Pakistan being a staple in U.S. international news coverage, recent events - which also implicate the U.S. government as having interfered in the country’s democratic processes - have garnered little coverage on the gravity of the current political situation in Pakistan which has seen the country’s military exert extreme control and repression. What’s going on? Backspace’s Sana Saeed looks at how the relationship between institutions of power and influence - media and foreign policy - works to manufacture which stories we care about and how.

This news report is a prime example of why people say Pakistanis have a bad habit of blaming the whole world for their woes. While every country looks after its own interests, Pakistan's "interests" have been that of its military establishment and wealthy elite. This is the problem with the country. Not foreigners hatching plots behind closed doors.

Actually Zia was a greedy bastard who got played by US & KSA narrative against Soviet Union and so he took dollars and help created Taliban. This was done by creating thousands of Madarsahs & train people extremist material. They also trained Afghan people as well. Now these polarized people fought the war with Soviets and defeated them. Later in 2001, there was another bastard dictator Musharraf who pleged to help US fight Taliban in reaction of 9/11. US invaded Afghanistan with the help of Pakistani military. This continued till 20 years & after that US troops returned back to US. Now the result is: 1. Pakistan still has groups of religious extremist. 3. Taliban are fighting war against Pak Army as they consider Pakistan as enemy (due to Musharraf supporting US against Taliban). 3. Pakistan political parties very weak due to consistent military rule & investment of Army in politics. A perspective from a Pakistani

Authorities used draconian sedition and counterterrorism laws to stifle dissent, and strictly regulated civil society groups and organizations critical of government actions or policies. Women, religious minorities, and transgender people continued to face violence, discrimination, and persecution, with authorities often failing to provide adequate protection or hold perpetrators to account. US news medias have been more and more bias, catering their coverage to various market audiences, especially sometime during the late 1980s. If you compare coverages from the 1950s through to the 1970s with post 1990s, there is a notable difference in journalistic standards with regards to ethics and bias coverage. With that said, American opinion of Pakistan has nothing to do with the problems in Pakistan. That is all the doing of Pakistanis.

@@ycplum7062 It's not bias -- it's change. Since the 1990s Muslim countries have steadily become less religiously tolerant and more hostile to freedom and democracy. Democracies are not out to destroy Islam -- Islam is out to destroy democracy. The governments of Muslim countries were more secular in the 1990s.
@ycplum7062
@ycplum7062 6 ай бұрын
@@DemPilafian I was about to say you are wrong about muslims, but then I realized to were talking about the country, not necessarily muslims. You are correct about the countries being less tolerant. I think it was a combination of the educated and secular leaving the muslim countries for better economic opportunities (a brain drain), combined the a resurgence Sayyid Qutb's teaching (from teh 50's and 60's). His reactionary and intolerant thinking found an audience among the poor and oppressed. Only by returning to the old teaching and reestablishing Shariah could they "reestablish the kindom of God/Allah on earth". Basically, this was analogous to a violent and fanatical islamic version of born again christian ... on steroid. And of course, you have various dictators trying to coopt this fevor for their own power. Think Erdogan (successfully) and even Saddam (less successfully). You also had Iran exporting terrorism and you had the rise of Al-Qaeda. The failures of Arab Spring certainly did not help. With all that said, I still think there is inceased bias in the US news media. The two are not mutually exclusive and I suspect they feed off each other. If you look at the choice of wordings and teh presentations from before 1980 and compare it with today's reporting, there is a massive difference.

Unlike the past when US sided with Pakistan, they know this hasn’t gone well for them. They aided Pakistan in 1971 against India which clearly hasn’t gone very well for the Americans considering Pakistanis returned the favor by helping China in their border expansion plans. The Soviets in 1971 not only helped India but won over their friendship which lasts till this day. I’m sure the Americans by now have a clarity on the side the have to pick so please stop blaming the Americans. It is Pakistan as a nation who is responsible for the current state of affairs in their own country. Acceptance is the first step to change.

At 62 years old, I've long regarded the USA as a beacon of humanity. However, recent events and the USA's silence regarding the situation in Pakistan suggest clear American intervention in Pakistani politics, prioritizing control over human rights violations. It's evident that Pakistan was established as a client state, with the USA effectively asserting hegemony, disregarding the well-being of Pakistani citizens. This realization is deeply disheartening and reflects poorly on both nations.

Excellent coverage! I love your reporting, Sana. And as some in the comments section have rightly pointed out, the Pakistani case is not unique, far from it. US media portrays many countries around the world as caricatures in order to dehumanise their people, to further their own political goals and to desensitise the American public to the suffering that causes. Such corrosive narrative needs to be denounced and dismantled urgently because the prospect of a direct confrontation against big nuclear-armed nations, such as Russia and China, is looming in the horizon, largely pushed by the US's "great power competition" mindset.

10:45 ..mmm there is a relecutence on the part of Pak army and politicians to look inwards... as long as $$$$$ poured in from US either as aid or in support of war In afganistan or in the war against USSR, the army and the generals ran with the loot....letting the citizens have few crumbs and shut them out.... the generals have looted Pak nation, the last 5 army chiefs are all living in Western nations including a guy who owns a private island off Australia...it is not that USA is ignoring Pak, its is simply the Pak as a nation has made itself irrelevant... but from time to time reminding US that they have the nukes.... so pay attention to us!!!! we do matter.

I like that you explain how things are not as simple or distilled as the majority of news outlet will portray. Nothing is ever as simple as people are told while reading the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, watching CNN, or Fox "news". My frustration is watching a supervisor's eyes get lost because he is not willing to accept that their is not simple answer. Everyone thinks their is a simple solution or explanation. But their is never a simple solution or explanation. If the explanation was simple then they would have figured out the explanation themselves. If the solution is simple then that solution is only convenient and convenience is expensive. Because the answer is not simple the person giving the answer can't be trusted. I read a news article and it seems to portray people as one extreme or the another extreme. I am exhausted of this type of polarization. And I am not surprised that the politics of other countries do not make sense. I am not being told the facts unless those facts agree with an extreme narrative. To use a metaphor I saw in a Robert Redford movie, "We needed twice the sex with half the foreplay." Then Americans wonder why people are fed-up with the US. We keep expecting people to like us after we screw them. And if they happen to like getting screwed then we want to charge more for the experience. Leaving the sex metaphors behind, Good night.

There is tremendous poverty, unemployment, inflation, corruption and lawlessness in Pakistan. The will lead to more chaos and anarchy across Pakistan. Most of the Pakistanis living in Pakistan want to leave Pakistan because it is a living hell now. There is no hope at all. I won't be surprised if Pakistan disintegrates by 2025.

Yes everyone want to win in this world and they set narrative which suits them. Powerful wins. But this power is not infinite or definite. Change will always come. No one can stay No 1. Eventually they have to slide to No 2. Resistance will always be there. I think that’s the reason why Indian/Hindus/Sanatani philosophy always insists to win inner self.

Suggestion: analyse the coverage of Armenia in Pakistan. The US are a big bully, but there are others too... Those (rightly) criticising the US sometimes give the impression that the superpower is the only source of evil, or the only one that should be held to any standard of human decency when dealing with other countries. If we mean to be respectful towards Pakistanis, should we not also question their unfair treatment of, and involvement in other countries too?

Of course india is sponsoring ,nurturing ,protecting terrorists and seperatists and marrying little girls from minority groups to 50 years old muslim uncles. RIGHT. No one should compare that country that is cursed from the birth to india . The land which had accepted had such great 5000 or even more old history and they are literally doing nothing to protect those places and destroying the temples ,shrines , monasteries that are older than their religion . Lol. That's how stupid they are. Out of all the muslims only the Iranian and Moroccon people have logic and common sense that they protected their culture and traditions and historical places except some temples destroyed by Iranian Islamists after revolution . They still have a protected hindu temple ,a zororestrian temple and many other 4000 years caves and other historical places built by their ancestors.

Pakistan's economic problems are symptoms of its geopolitical problems. Pakistanis will never prosper until they fight for independence from Pakistani Generals and the Anglo-$axons and switch sides in the Great Game. 200 years ago 5,000 British soldiers along with 12,000 sepoys crossed the Indus River and entered Afghanistan and carried out regime change by overthrowing King Dost Khan of Afghanistan in an unprovoked act of aggression. The British Empire feared King Dost Khan may form diplomatic relations with the Czar of Russia to help Afghanistan restore its lost empire in the Indus valley. The Royal Grand Indus Army that owns, occupies and ru(i)ns Pakistan maintains Britain's imperial legacy and enforces British foreign policy in Afghanistan and Indus valley for a fistful of $$$. The Great Game or Ghazwa-e-Rus.

One has to ask just one question. Was there any terrorism going on in Pakistan before US descended back in 1979 to arm and train uneducated, illiterate Afghans against Soviets presence there using Pakistan as a conduit to do that? If you can answer that question honestly than you can figure out who promoted terrorism in that region.
