How do you get them to brood & hatch chick's on their own w/o using an incubator? I've had chickens for 20 yrs & not one has sat long enough to hatch out chick's. How can you have a self-sustaining flock if they won't reproduce?

You want to keep a small flock of chickens that genetically still go broody. Chickens bred for high egg production, have been selected over many, many generations not go broody. Do some research, it's a fascinating subject to look in to, or chat to your local chicken club. Beware: half of your chicks will be roosters... need to work out what you will do with them. 😅

​@liddigoodwin9807 We did research it. We chose breeds specifically for their broodiness & keep the correct ratio of rooster to hens. They will brood a week to week & a half judging by size of formed chick, then abandon nest box. In some cases, when the brooding hen gets up temporarily to eat, others will sneak over & lay eggs in box. In this instance, we end up w/multiple aged eggs, if any go bad hen abandons the whole clutch. We had considered separating out a broody hen & eggs to see if she'd sit long enough to hatch but heard sometimes there's issues in pecking order when reintroducing hen back into flock. Any other suggestion? I just remember in my parents & grandparents day, they just let them do what can natural; Hens roosted, they hatched, & the chicks were right in with the flock! Would that it were still that simple!?!
