Sending out a letter making accusations of infringement may be cheap and easy, but when you get immediately sued for making an actionable threat it’s not quite as cheap and easy

That's a good point. Always take advice from your legal representative and do make sure you're aware of the risks you run. In my experience most reputable companies respond well in this scenario but there will always be some people who take a very aggressive approach to legal matters. As long as the letter isn't based on false or frivolous claims, or violates the rights of the recipient, you don't normally run the risk of getting sued. Always take legal advice though.
