Why Patrick Campbell Is So Wrong About ADHD?

In this video I display and discuss a short video clip from Patrick Campbell’s KZbin Shorts website, I Don’t Know (But I’m Going to Find Out). The video is entitled “Is Everyone with ADHD Faking It?.” I dismember the claims in the video demonstrating that most of them are simply untrue. Moreover, the video is filled with slurs against the physicians who have studied ADHD (“brain nerds”) not to mention against people with ADHD. So why is Patrick Campbell saying so many falsehoods about ADHD? You be the judge of that, but it’s clear to me that the video is replete with untruths.
Reference for the video: • Is everyone with ADHD ...

Just to comment on the "brain nerd" part. What I've noticed in the past 10-15 years is that the word "nerd" has moved away from being a slur into being a more of a positive title. This probably has to do with the rise of the internet and other fields where smart people are held in high regard by the greater population and in the pop culture as a whole. So even though "nerd" was very much a slur when I was growing up, it's more like badge of honor for people these days. I'd imagine this is even more so with the younger generations. Overall this short is ridiculous. Thank you for reacting to it and correcting the inaccuracies. There's so much misunderstanding of the condition all over the internet and the world. It's very refreshing to see your takes on these matters from the point of view of someone who actually knows what's going on. We greatly appreciate your continued work in the field through free public education 🙏 Public healthcare is still decades behind - at least here in Finland - in terms of understanding ADHD and providing support to those suffering from it. I'm a 33 year old guy myself and it took me two years of depression and anxiety treatment, self-study and self-advocation to even get on the queue to get a chance to be diagnosed. This was even after a psychiatrist recommended it and the screening tool performed by a general doctor being extremely positive. Now I have a 2 year wait ahead of me to actually get tested. It's madness.

That's crazy! I was lucky, because my doctor wrote an applications that got me in to see a psychologist quickly, so I'm currently being evaluated. As a zoomer I can attest to the first paragraph. A hobby/interest/occupation + "Nerd" is often used with the meaning of just being into something. I'd also say that over the past years many things that were considered nerdy in a pejorative way have now basically become mainstream.

While you are right, given the entire sentiment of the video, it is clear his intent is not on praising the intellectual capabilities of those who concluded those studies, - because the next second, he goes on to insult not only adhd people, but also those who try to help them. It's still meant to be derogatory, like everything else in his video. And while the word has been in the limelight for a year or two in the "positive" way, it is still mostly being used to belittle someones intelligence, especially among youths, which I interact with A LOT on a daily basis and which the video is clearly intended for. No normal unimpressionable adult would be drawn to that greasy neckbeard, who cannot form a true sentence and feels the need to exploit impressionable young people with half truths and sensationalism, just so he can capitalise on it.

The results of influencers like these? Ableism. I'm diagnosed with ADHD-Combined Type and with autism, colloquially called AuDHD. This was determined by the best clinical psychologist in my area, and luckily, insurance covered it all. Others aren't so privileged but I think my lucky stars I am. So despite the fact I have an official diagnosis of these two conditions, one person said that I was nothing but "A Millennial raised by TV and video games and that's why I am the way I am." THAT'S the result of these influencers. They aren't helping like they think they are, often it's just an excuse to openly bully and harass people with disabilities without being held accountable for it. I thought about putting the person that said this to me on blast, as I screenshot the conversation, but, thankfully, with the work I was doing with my therapist on my impulsivity, I forced a pause and thought that nothing good will come of it. Just know, bullying STILL HAPPENS PEOPLE, just these influencers are making this content to create plausible deniability that they're bullying and being ableist. So, thank you Russ for calling these people out! They have to be held accountable to what they say, as what they say actually causes real harm.

This is such an amazing Video Dr Barkley. I am so sick of these social media contents and their creators' mindset who make shallow, untrue and unscientific videos and either misinforme, insult or turn ADHD and basically any mental/physical situation and difficulty into sth shallow or even a "fake thing" just to earn the money. A little bit of funny content can be accepted (depending on the context) but we should remember that these are serious issues and people suffer because of them, both in their childhood and adulthood. They might call me "too sensetive" for this, but I'd say, responsibility (socially, morally etc.) is a key factor in making us different from other live species ! If you have no medical or academic specialty in the subject, just stay out it.

Hey Dr. Barkley - thanks for responding to my video and story. You added a lot of great context that I think is super beneficial for the wider community, but also the specific ADHD community that clearly captures your passion. Folks appear to have learned an immense amount from you - including me! While I appreciated some aspects of your video, I think a little context from my end will help clear up the more antagonistic bits of your critique. Some of your interpretations of my intent were certainly not what I intended. Others were less than charitable, which I think comes from some misunderstands I also hope to clear up. Obviously I don’t think you’re malicious at all in your interpretations, but I think your passion on this subject probably pushed you to wish I had injected more nuance into a sixty second story or not glossed over some things that I glossed over. All of that’s totally fair, but I think we’re trying to accomplish different goals (and you might not agree with my goals, but I want to make sure you at least understand it! :)) Put more simply - I think you’re super well intentioned and knowledgeable about this subject and took an expert lens to a story that wasn’t meant to be comprehensive. To that end, let me give you some context on my goals and then address a number of your critiques specifically. ##MY GOAL I create health related shorts with the goal of starting important conversations around health topics. I’m not a doctor. Don’t claim to be one. Not a guru. Don't selling anything. I’m just someone with a research and data background who wants to learn to tell great stories and chose health as my general area for those stories (since I’ve been on quite the health journey personally). As I’m sure you can attest given your background, a lot of health research and content is either way too dense and unapproachable or completely baseless and just vapor. I’m trying to find a balance of taking important questions or research and distilling it down into an approachable story. This means there are massive tradeoffs, and I’m absolutely not perfect at walking that tightrope quite yet. To get to perfection though I need to tell a story that’s entertaining, but also presents why someone should care *and* what they should care about or look into further. I’m not going to always succeed, but I’ve gotten much better the past year “hiding the broccoli in the cheese” as I call it. I think this is where a lot of your claims ended up misinterpreting what I was saying or doing, which you can still disagree with me doing it in the first place, but I’d like to clear those up to maybe make it more of a "well you're failing at what you're doing" versus "this guy's a jerk trying to grift"! Let's address some of your claims though to reinforce this point. ##ADDRESSING HISTORICAL CLAIMS To tell a good story that sparks a question or action there’s a main goal and then there’s background, tension, and resolution. But I also only have 60 seconds, so I have to gloss over parts that lead to the question or action, but aren’t absolutely crucial to that question or action. For instance, right off the bat I mentioned in this short “so back in the day ADHD wasn’t a thing”, which you replied with as a “lie, because during the 1700s it started to become a thing” (paraphrasing). This is the point I’m making - that “[before the 1700s] ADHD wasn’t a thing”. Now you could say I should have said those exact words or “ADHD always existed, but we didn’t formally talk about it until the 1700s”, but given the point of this short isn’t the precise history of ADHD I felt like it was ok to start the story by talking about the general history. If you look at other videos from me, there’s a common theme of “back in the day” or “before 1950” or “for most of history” in order to get people into the story. To further support my point, the very next thing I talk about is that the "brain nerds" (I'll address your comment on that phrase later) - including Alexander Crichton - started formalizing/discovering ADHD, which would have happened in the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s. This is what I was saying, and what you were saying. So again, I’m not saying I couldn’t have been more precise here, but the point of the short wasn’t the history of ADHD. This was simply an introduction. Similarly you claimed to be confused by me saying that the brain nerds noticed that the fidgeting existed across social strata which lead to the belief that it must be a disease and how that doesn’t fit with the formal recognition in 1968. That makes perfect sense, but I wasn’t referring to that at all. I was referring to George Still’s original research, particularly his original lectures to the Royal College of Physicians. Here he talked about the prevalence across social strata leading to his belief. He’s credited with the formal recognition of ADHD (at least in my research), so this felt appropriate to say. Similarly you say me saying “we don’t know how to treat the kids” is “patently untrue” because we’ve developed many treatments over the last hundred years. Again based on your prior assumption of me talking about 1968 or today, this makes sense. But again, I wasn’t. In the early 1900s we didn’t know a lot of treatments. All of the treatments you referenced came after this. Similarly you say my comment about putting the kids in the “short bus room” is off because most ADHD kids aren’t put in separate classrooms. Again, today that’s true. Back then it was not true. They were put in those equivalent classrooms. As an aside, the short bus comment was a misfired attempt at humor, so I get why that may understandably gristle you or others. Overall, I absolutely get the nuance you’re injecting and if you were assuming I was talking about today, you would be right in pointing out some of the inconsistencies. But again, I was talking about the very timeline you were referring to - albeit in a more generalized and glossed over fashion. It’s a tradeoff I made and one I stand by, minus some tweaks I’ll be taking forward (more on that later). ##ADDRESSING SCIENCE AND DATA CLAIMS Similar to the historical timeline tradeoffs, I also need to condense a good amount of history about how science came to be. For the Dr. Bradley critique, this is what I was doing. I certainly made it seem purely causal though, which I think is a very fair criticism. I’m not sure it’s worth attacking though versus maybe providing more context about “this is more complicated…here’s the whole story” which would be amazing. For the “70M Americans taking amphetamines” - this is based on FBI and CDC estimates. The best critique here is the one you made around “just because a small portion of younger kids are over-diagnosed doesn’t mean that they’re misdiagnosed” (paraphrasing). Here I think you have an amazing point that I absolutely concede. You’re 100% right. There are a lot of other reasons why this could be the case and I’m editorializing without showing what I would call likely “required nuance”. My only defense - and I’m not saying this is a good one - are the other studies that try to estimate the misdiagnosis rate, the anecdotes of kids just being put on meds, and the rise of the pill farms that have happened around some of these drugs. For time, I’m mixing points, but also likely drawing too much of a causal conclusion that you point out here. I think that’s a bit too far though, so something to improve upon. My main goal was to get folks to question if they truly have kids who need the drugs or not while also adding to the conversation as many people believe that ADHD is truly a scam, because of those misdiagnoses and still head beliefs that kids are just "lazy", which is wrong. As I’m sure you know, there are a lot of amazing practitioners, but then there are plenty of not so great ones that simply prescribe away. ##ADDRESSING TONE CLAIMS Nerds is a term of endearment to me, not a slur. I call myself a nerd. I call all the heroes of the stories I write nerds. I call the winners of the stories I write nerds. It’s a positive term, and has consistently been one in my shorts since I started using it. Typically the “bad guys” in the stories I write are “bros” or “gals”. The short bus comment was a misfired attempt at humor. Totally get your critique. Other fun phrases and terms come from the fact that I’m trying to make things more approachable and entertaining. I don’t think this is a terrible tradeoff to make, but I understand I can misfire from time to time. ##IN CLOSING I really, really appreciate the feedback and I’m taking away the following: - I’m still going to do condensing and glossing over swaths of history that aren’t the main focus of the story, but I can tighten up some of the language and some of the visuals can be more period based. For instance, the short bus comment shows a modern kid, which wasn’t the intent. - I need to look out for “required nuance” and find better ways to tie points together regardless of the time constraint. Let me know if I can be helpful along any other axis and keep providing nuance to these conversations. Hopefully you realize my intent and even if you still disagree with my approach (which is fine) you at least understand: 1. my intentions aren’t sinister, and 2. I’m at least conscious of this balance of entertainment and information. I wish you well and look forward to more videos from you. A fellow KZbin nerd, Patrick

Patrick, There is no way to reconcile any kind of nuance or real transfer of information with the kind of piece you produced. A sensationalistic 60 second spot like this is designed to engage people by pushing their buttons, creating agitation. That’s all entertainment and no education. If you truly have the idea that you can shed light this way, you’re wrong. Note that, to explain yourself and your position to Dr. Barkley, you wrote a detailed and lengthy reply. Suppose I told you that wasn’t allowed? You have sixty seconds to make your case, and first and foremost it must be entertaining in a bombastic way. I think you would feel frustrated and unable to adequately explain yourself. That’s what your video feels like to the commenters here. You’ve reduced our lives and our struggles to a frenetic sound bite. If your intentions are good, then please recognize this: you simply cannot cover the history of ADHD in a sensational 60 second video. Clickbait exists to be clickbait; if that’s the format you wish to work in, select a simpler subject that lacks the potential to do harm. If you want to explore a subject like this, accept that you ought not use this type of format. Doing so is jamming your ADHD subjects in the short bus.

The only thing worse than lack of information, is misinformation. So thank you for taking the time to address this... work of fiction. If you're "taking requests", it would be great if you could cover the use and efficiency of aripiprazole in the treatment of ADHD.

Thank you for sharing truths about ADHD in KZbin! I took your advice several years ago, because ADHD is seen as a joke. (Squirrel! anyone?) So I started telling people I have Executive Dysfunction instead. Since most people don't know what that means, they take it more seriously. Even if I put away my cell phone for weeks and turn off all notifications, I still have my ADHD symptoms.

Good video, but one thing to note. Maybe it's my ADHD or something else but I couldn't take it when the video was being paused every couple of seconds. Maybe if we would get to watch the video fully (if it's not too long) and then you could do a breakdown like you did professor, everything except the pausing was perfect. I think it would be easier to follow that way. Thanks for these videos, I learned a lot about my condition.

There are quite a few of these types of con men around now, and they do a lot of damage. A few find themselves liquidating their ill gotten gains when specific victims of their demagoguery file suit and win, but Patrick surely knows that he is attacking people in general enough terms to be fairly safe. The one useful takeaway for me was what you said about timing of pregnancies. That’s more or less my gestational timeline.

Dr Barkley, there are many people who talk on and on about how ADHD is fake and how people with ADHD are just lazy people who are looking for an excuse. I know many people like that and they're not youtubers, they don't make any money out of it. What is the motivation behind this in your opinion? Because their comments are so full of hate like there is something personal for them. When I see a post like that, it really hurts me because as a late dx person, I already have feelings of "am I using ADHD as an excuse? Am I faking it?"
