Football players should always be judged within their era. Pele was the best in his time, for sure. I disagree when people call him the best ever. There is no SINGLE best ever. Messi and Ronaldo also aren't the best ever because you can't compare eras. Why? Here's my reasoning. We just don't know and just can't assume that either Messi/Ronaldo or Pele would make it in a different era. Maybe Pele wouldn't be able to deal with the higher tempo on the pitch these days or the way teams put pressure and have to defend with a counter press etc. Maybe his body wouldn't be able to cope with the packed schedule these days to play on the level he played at. Maybe he'd just be decent, maybe he'd be one of the top players, maybe he wouldn't have the mentality to cope with the modern day pressures of football. Who knows? We can't judge him on that because it would just be assuming. And the exact same is the case for Messi and Ronaldo. They are both a product of what came before them. They both also take advantage of modern day views on diet and fitness. Messi got growth hormones in his youth because he was too little as a kid. If he was born in the 40s or 50s, he wouldn't have gotten those. Nor would he had a dietist who helped him a few years ago to get in better nutritional shape because he was suffering from some injuries. Same goes for Ronaldo, he takes advantage of modern day views on fitness and health. He would've lived in an era where it was normal to drink alcohol and play football. I heard a former footballer even talk about how he was still hung over at times while playing a professional match. You can't do that any more these days. Since the end of the 90s, football has drastically changed when it's about diet. Ronaldo maybe would've stayed more leaner, have less reach with his headers and less power in his shots. Also a bigger chance that he wouldn't have left Portugal. Same for Messi in Argentina. After Zidane stopped, I honestly thought I'd never see a player anymore that would entertain me as much... then came Messi. So I won't ever say any more that a player is the best ever. Records are there to be broken and football constantly changes. I remember when most teams played 422 and a lot of football was played with less pressure, passing the ball around and mostly the Dutch playing 433 with possession football. Now look at most teams, most teams switched to having 3 strikers and after that a new development happened with the way they use pressure and retrieve the ball. Back in the day it was mostly the defenders that did the defending, now a whole team needs to be constantly awake and active. Football will keep changing and maybe another change will come in the next 10 years which will give a new generation a tool to score even more goals than a Messi/Ronaldo. And that player also WILL NOT be the GOAT. There is no GOAT. There merely are great players in each generation. Thanks for reading my Ted Talk.
