As a GK I use this D as guidelines for how far out to the side I can go (not including 1v1s). This is because when you go out of it’s range, you leave massive parts of the goal completely open. It’s quite a useful tool.

There’s another benefit from having the „D“: if for whatever reason the marker for the penalty spot can’t be seen (due to snow on the field or bad field conditions especially in lower leagues) you can reconstruct the penalty spot using the „D“ as the penalty spot is the middle point of that circle.

Actually have never wondered. Saw players standing around it when penalties were being taken and got the gist. Performs the same task as the centre circle at kick off, except you only need to mark the portion of the circle around the penalty spot which sits outside of the box, since nobody is allowed in. Apologies if I’ve repeated stuff from the video. I didn’t watch it because I’ve never wondered.

It’s also to tell the goalkeeper where the goal is if he is in front of the d. He just has to look to the side and based on where in the d he is standing, he knows where the goal is and doesn’t have to turn his head fully

Rules for corners and free kicks used to specify 6 yards, so I'm guessing that it was originally the case for penalties as well, in which case the edge of the penalty area would've indicated that distance, and the D was added at the same time that the distance was increased to 10 yards
