Hi Cuties, I wished I clarified in the video but I am only speaking towards my issues with the Qatari government and their laws. Not about the people of Qatar. There are so many progressive and lovely people in Qatar who have fought for these rights and continue to do so. The issue is not the people of Qatar but the government. Just as I criticize the USA for their policies and laws, I will also stand against any human rights violations that hurt LGBTQ+ people and women. After talking with my friend, I realize I spoke very generally in an attempt to make the video concise but I never want to offend anyone who lives in the middle east or who practices Islam. I understand many places in the middle east have such beautiful and deep histories. As the world evolves, we create changes to reflect that in our countries and a lot of the middle east have made so much progress with human rights. I understand progress can take time but that's why I believe in creating pressure to push for change and for human rights; which is why I spoke about this boycott. We all deserve the same rights and freedoms under the government no matter where we are. Although we can disagree with the laws, this is never a reason to be hateful or islamophobic. I will always support my fellow brothers and sisters in the middle east.

You really don’t have to clarify on Islam. The rulers of Qatar can claim they’re Muslim all they want, but they really are just tribalists using religion as a veneer for their own business interests. Much as it is with Arabia and the House of Saud…

I haven’t been watching the World Cup this year. It is something that I usually look forward to. I couldn’t watch know all the human rights violations. I think the if some of the major countries would have boycotted the World Cup it would have sent a strong message to the FIFA. Unfortunately they only care about money and they don’t care about human rights.

thanks so much for explaining this to me in a way I can understand, usually it's just people shouting out about things that just attack each other directly. I wasn't aware of the entire immigrant situation, but as an LGBTQ+ person - I think it's for the best that I don't participate in watching the world cup either. side note: I'm Ukrainian, and a lot of people like me that had to flee - people are offering low tier jobs that treat us like crap just because of the fact that we NEED work to stay out of the conflict zone. I believe that the Qatar world cup isn’t the first sporting event to be a perpetrator of human rights violations of sorts. Olympics events have been known to be at the center of humanitarian controversies too. I’m not sure about the SuperBowl but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the case as well. This goes to show that the public needs the utmost transparency when worldwide events of any kind are happening, including sporting events.

one thing that must be said in regards to the world cup and the world's (mostly the western world's) reaction the world cup is that it's mostly based on bigotry and hypocrisy. now, criticism against qatar or any other country that violated human right is 100% valid, but to go so far as to hold these countries - developing/underdevolped, "third world" nations - to much higher standard is just plain hypocritical and extreme. during the 2018 world cup, there was not much criticism against russia, a country that actually has rules prohibiting gay rights, unlike qatar, one that does not explicitly have rules against being gay, but simply prohibits PDA, as well as south africa in 2010, which has a history - and still to this day - of racism and discrimination against black natives. for anyone actually interested in understanding why this heavy criticism of a globally south and non-western country is bigoted, i seriously recommend reading up on orientalist and post-colonial theory. LGBTQ+ and women in qatar have explicitly said over and over again that this criticism and white saviorism is doing more harm than good. qatar and other third world nations will socially progress when they are ready to, and they do not need the pity of white folks and western countries to do so.
@KristinaMaione
@KristinaMaione 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree to a certain extent. When Qatar was awarded the World Cup they pledged to fix human rights violations by the time the 2022 World Cup began and not much has changed, including how the workers were treated while building the massive infrastructure for the event. So this isn’t just holding a “third world country” to a high standard. They set the standard with promises and pledges to change and didn’t follow through on them and showed little to no regard for the migrant workers that actually lost their lives to build this event. I think these are all very fair criticisms and people have every right to not support if that aligns with their morals and values!

The world cup being hosted in russia where there aren't gay rights is also bad, actually. With Qatar, at least for me anyway, it has nothing to do with race or colonialism. I don't think I ever want to go the the US because of its _'rights',_ for example. I'm not being _'bigoted'_ to qatar because of its geographical location or the race of the people who live there, I'm _'bigoted'_ to them because _they_ are bigoted to other groups like lgbtq+ people and women. That doesn't mean I want western countries to invade with their militaries and enforce things they haven't socially progressed to yet, but I sure as hell don't want anything to do with the country. Hopefully some day they will socially progress to the point of like having human rights.

8:30. This right here is why it is impossible to talk about. Because as soon as you speak up about the shitty parts about someone's "culture" and why it should be denounced, you get called a "phobe" or an "ist," pick whichever. I know someone who is as liberal as they come regarding human rights and as soon as I brought it up that maybe, just maybe FIFA shouldn't have picked a nation that treats women and LGBT people like dirt he said "You may not like it but that's their culture and you have to respect it." Which translates to "I don't want to be called a phobe or an ist so let's spew out some lame line instead."

This matter reminds me of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin Germany. There was a movement to boycott that event as well, though ultimately it still wound up being held. I feel that the tactical utility of a boycott depends upon the economic impact. Would ignoring the World Cup, especially by someone who would have been simply sitting at home, rather than attending in person, really cause a financial loss to the host country of Qatar? I think that both teams and sponsors would have to withdraw for such an action to have any meaningful effect. But in addition to the historical instance I mentioned, and of more special interest to me as a chess enthusiast , was this more recent boycott of a Women's chess tournament that was held in Iran, in 2016. There was controversy as to the appropriateness of some players choosing to refuse to participate in that championship then as well. Being that I am not myself a woman, and no more than an asexual ally, which I realize isn't exactly the same as being gay, or some might even arguably say the same as being LGBT, I suppose that this issue doesn't affect me directly. I just wanted to say that I support showing as much meaningful solidarity as is possible, and properly called for, under the circumstance, with those oppressed by the government of Qatar, including the LGBT community, and women in that country. < encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/the-movement-to-boycott-the-berlin-olympics-of-1936 , www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2016/09/124913/female-chess-players-boycotting-iran-world-championships-hijabs , www.theguardian.com/world/2016/sep/30/boycott-of-womens-world-chess-championship-iran-tehran >

As of Qatar, i havent watched a single game of this world cup and i wouldnt have even if Sweden qualified for the tournament. Theres definitely been violations and human rights issues in other countries and world cup, this is just the the next level of corruption which has plauged fifa for decades. Whenever fifa alow countries like Qatar and Russia to host the world cup they embolden them and their regime and allow them to sportwash which means they can cover up violations committed in the country. So even if i understand why some people think its hypocrisy to criticize Qatar, specialy cus human rights violations committed in other countries, i still think it shouldnt stop us from addressing the issue with Qatar and most importantly Fifa. Fifa is a huge problem and has been a problem for decades and we need to put pressure on that organization.

Hi Kristina, great points in your video. Speaking of LGBTQ+ and women's rights violations, I wish you'd also talk about the humanitarian crisis that has been happening in Iran for over 43 years. Iranians are now in the streets fighting against the oppressive regime. The regime that does all the same things you mentioned about Qatar. The regime doesn't even give women a choice to choose whether they want hijab or not. The regime has killed over 400 people in the past 3 months; 58 were children! Speaking of Qatar, they've detained and restricted the people wearing #woman_life_freedom T-shirts or anything related to the ongoing revolution in Iran. They're working with the regime and wish to silence us. I'm sure you know that the more this is talked about, the more of the fighting chance the people have to topple the regime. I know this is a long shot, and you probably won't read this, but as your fan and an Iranian woman, I am asking you to be our voice. #mahsaamini

Even if it was "only" 37 deaths, which i highly doubt, 37 deaths is insane. That'S 37 people with lives, dreams, families and worth. And the world just accepts this? Where would they draw the line? At 40 deaths? at 2000? Is there no limit at all? That there is even conversation about that "37" isn't that bad and such is mindboggling to me. There should not be a single life lost.

Don't feel guilty, the money from the commercials during commercial breaks goes to FIFA, not Qatar. Qatar has already cashed in on the actual seat tickets they sold in the stadiums, and the Qatar airways flight tickets, and the hotel rooms in Qatar, and all the restaurants, and tourist activities, and shops, and street vendors in Qatar are already benefiting financially from all the international tourists who flew in just for the games. So there's literally nothing people in the West can do now. By not watching, you'd just be missing out on a great world-important sports event, and you'd be missing out on a unique opportunity to bond with your dad. Maybe you can take this opportunity to talk to your dad (during the breaks, ofc) about some of these human rights issues and exchange opinions on how you feel about them, and that can become a new ground for intellectual bonding between you two. Either way, just know that I completely agree with everything Kristina said here, I do not support the government of Qatar and its hundreds years long unfair laws, but all those people who are not watching in order to support women's rights or immigrant workers rights, lgbtq rights etc, are unaware that they're not doing anything actually. They/We should get better organized in advance next time.

Hmm you are right when you say there are good people there but I think the main issue here is the Islamic laws because of which many people are treated disposable garbage, they don't say how forcing everyone in the country to live like how the people of the 7th century were living is cruel, there needs to be a lasting change and for that to happen religion needs to take a step back from government because as you can see most of the laws are purely Islamic laws and Those laws are really the one's that have violated many human rights. Separation of state and religion is very important for human rights.

Imo I don't agree with attempting to boycott fifa just cause government issues, I get human rights and all. The world cup is just an event being held in a place with corrupt government. (Every country has government issues) And to add on to it, you have to remember Qatar is a Muslim country they have their beliefs and as someone who grew up with Muslim parents, the way their brain work is different to someone who grew up in our generation. You can only blame the upbringing on the way they think. Sure I don't agree with treating people wrongly but I don't think that has anything to do with fifa just cause it's held there. One day someone will step in and make a change but until then all you can do is bring light to it. And as for the whole immigrant thing, I hate the fact people only see this crap now when it's been happening for years. People are leaving their home country to live somewhere better only to work themselves to death just to try and survive. It happens all over middle eastern countries, but only when a massive event happens do people look. I went to Lebanon not long ago and within the first week I wanted to go back home from how shit it's become from corrupt government but no one bats an eye towards these issues. I'm happy to have a civil discussion cause I know people tend to misunderstand what their reading. It's harder to write down what you wanna say than to just say it out loud

Hi Kristina ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🏳‍🌈🏳‍⚧ , good video. Speaking of queer and women's rights, and human rights violations, I hoped that you would mention Iran's recent revolutionary uprisings/strikes (peaceful and unarmed) and the Islamic republic regime's brutal and violent crackdowns in this video or another dedicated video. Till today, after the past 3 months, More than 400 are dead and more than 60 of them are children/minors. More than 100 people have been shot closely and are now blind or lost some percentage of their vision in one or both eyes. Over 18,000 people have been arrested and dozens/more or fewer hundreds of people have been hanged or prosecuted and sentenced to execution by hanging with different reasons/excuses and titles with forced/coerced confessions. And those who have been tried had no appointed lawyer present. Kinda related because Qatar's government hasn't shown any kind of support and has helped the Islamic Republic regime's crackdown on protesters in Qatar's World Cup, in and outside of stadiums. And didn't allow entrance to the free Iranian medias for reporting and coverage of any matches or protests there. Or for protesters to gather and say chants, having and/or wearing any type of apparel containing the face and/or names of people who have been killed, and the opposition's/protester's/rebel's revolutionary chants or hashtags or graphics in matches, Whether they were with Iran or not, whether in or outside stadiums, before or after any match. There are pics and videos of a guy jumping into the field with a shirt on that reads respect Iranian women and a rainbow flag in hand. And actually, there are some videos, witnessing Qatari security forces dragging Iranian protesters who were chanting or have worn or had apparel that contained opposition, protester's chants or graphics, or hashtags. Islamic republic's regime has reigned, ruled, and oppressed us for over 43 years. Now we are fighting back and actually have a chance for victory, freedom, and peace. But, we need the world's help. We, the people of Iran, need your help. I, as a queer person, need your help. Please, be our voice, be my voice. Share the story of our suppression and our fight. Please make a video of the topic and raise awareness. I hope you read this and do help. Love you, tnx. 😘💗💓💟🖤🤍♥#lovewins #loveislove #womenlifefreedom #women_life_freedom #womenlifeliberty #women_life_liberty #mahsaamini #mahsa_amini #مهسا_امینی #زن_زندگی_آزادی

What is your point? _"They just hate the corruption of FIFA. But that has nothing to do with LGBTQ+ or Women's right."_ - Uh yes it literally does though? It's being hosted in a country without LGBTQ+ or women's rights due to the corruption of FIFA. I can tell u this Qatar gets hot I say hell hot. While being deployed to Iraq we got to go on R&R there for three-four days on the base we have there. We have a flag system in the Marine Corps black flag means no exercising or any kind of physical activity outside for health reasons let me tell u everyday was a black flag it was hell hot. When it wasn’t a black flag it was still HOT HOT HOT and humid walking to get something to eat on base was a chore. So of course the selection committee should have saw that they didn’t have the infrastructure or the stadiums they shouldn’t have picked them people dying was going to happen from heat related health issues never mind other deaths that can happen on the job. The selection committee don’t usually care about human rights unless it’s a country the world is universally outraged at so if they wanted it in the Middle East they should have picked Dubai
