One of the most unusual things Keen have done with SE is they will at times release a new DLC with new blocks while ADDING new blocks to PREVIOUS DLCs, adding value to your past purchases and further incentivizing multiple DLC purchases to really fill out your build menu.
@Thalanox2 ай бұрын
Space Marine 2 is funding big updates with new modes, factions, and enemies by selling Cosmetic DLCs. It's a good model.
@jacob4162 ай бұрын
Even better the DLCs are entirely cosmetic. You get all the mechanics the game has to offer for 10-20USD including ones that were release years after versions 1.0. Then you can spend 5-10 USD every couple months to keep things fresh. It really is a genius monetization strategy. As someone who doesn’t typically purchase DLC, I own roughly half of the space engineers DLC.
@therealbahamut2 ай бұрын
@@jacob416 Weeeelll, I'd say they're "mostly" cosmetic, since each of them DOES actually include new blocks that allow new design configurations that were impossible before. The only downside is that anyone trying to upload a blueprint to the workshop tends to keep an eye toward using as few DLC's as possible so even full vanilla players can actually enjoy their creation. It's a weird place, despite it working for this long.
@Thalanox2 ай бұрын
@@therealbahamut That seems somewhat unusual for a game like that. Are these consistent DLCs, or are they more along the lines of a game getting a handful of expansions? Is there is "full" package that stays consistent over time? There should be some kind of stability in the DLC ecosystem for mods that make use of all those new toys to exist. Otherwise they'd have to constantly be updated.
@therealbahamut2 ай бұрын
@@Thalanox Well modders will mod no matter what and oftentimes old mods get handed off to new modders when the old modder decides to move on so that's kind of an aside. The DLC's have almost always included new blocks that don't drastically change gameplay and vanilla players can certainly live without them but there's always been at least one new block in each DLC that I see and go "ooh, that would solve SO many design problems I'm having!" but then if you intend for people to actually use your creations, much less print them in a legitimate survival scenario rather than just copypasting them into a creative mode, it behooves you to use as few DLCs and mods as humanly possible so your work is usable by a wider audience. It's this frustrating dilemma where we can make so many cool toys with all sorts of moving parts and fancy new blocks but then it's hard to share them because people can't actually use them legitimately. Like I said, it's a weird spot. I have some confidence that Keen are working to address that in the sequel though.
@TheDeinonychus2 ай бұрын
Don't forget that Keen has garnered a good deal of good will with it's customers. One of the big reasons is their policy of not requiring a DLC purchase when a new functional block is added to the game. For example, new cosmetics of functional blocks are paid DLC, such as the different styles of conveyors that have the exact same function as the base game's, only with a different look. But new functional blocks, such as Prototech, are always part of a free update available to anyone regardless of what DLC they do or do not have.

It also doesn't hurt that there are so many mods, that there is probably one for any block you don't have.

I got pulled back in recently and have been having a great time making some of the most aesthetically pleasing ships I have ever made. It's also one of those games where you can have a relaxing time just tinkering with something while you put a movie on a side-monitor, or have a more serious day trying to take down pirate bases with your finished combat vessels. There is so much satisfaction in having an idea that works out; be it a mining ship that handles well and pulls a good yield, or a large combat ship that was able to withstand a good beating, or just finishing that mess-hall to add some role-play flavor to your main base. Today I binged a rewatch of The Expanse while painting the hangar in my carrier and finishing some lighting to make it one step closer to perfection in a private server i run with friends. And last night I loaded up a fleet of my most recent designs in creative single player, set them to the pirate faction, flew about 10km away from them and then loaded in my most recent strike fighter to see how well it fairs attempting bomb runs on the command decks of some of my most heavily armed battlecruisers. The blueprinting system is fantastic, the ability to either create something quickly in creative and print it out in a server, or stress test something you made on a server in a safe environment repeatedly to fine-tune it before bringing it to combat is so useful.

Throwing out one idea for either a challenge, or an entire server: *Capture, Salvage, Restore, Claim and Buy!* - You can't build from scratch ANYTHING (Bases, rovers, ships, drones and ect.), with two exceptions;* You need to either buy all of those, or salvage and restore stuff from encounters, or capture and Claim stuff from encounters, or all 3 combined in no particular oreder and proportionality! Also, when you get those, you can modify them, but it still must be recognisable as that original ship; atleast in size, silluete, and Color Pattern(can change "faction color" for your own, but leaving paint scheme and the rest of the colors the same, or similar). *The first exception for building from scratch is for one particular category of ships - capture and boarding ships; ships to ONLY capture or board enemy constructs with prefferably as little damage to targets as possible, even at the cost of themselfs. **If you successfully capture and Claim a drone, you can build that particular type of drone in your capital ships; if that drone belongs to a "faction" (Pirate, Frostbite, Green, Yellow, Blue, Red, Factorum), you can only build it in the capital ship of the same faction; only personal drones allowed to be modified, with those that are "shared" or belongs to a fleet be forbidden from modifying.

The ways you can improve ressource gathering by sending out drones, decreasing your own involvment in ressource gathering if you so wish and therefor spend more time on creating new grids/bps are also pretty insane. Then there is scripting, where people who want to learn or are good at programming have an in. More than one who first tested out modding in a game like SE later on became a programmer in RL. Does that at times advantages to people who know stuff and are better at using the possible ways you can interact with the game sure, but you can also just gather in a blob of people and do everything like you are used from other games and still be the biggest most scarriest group arround, but single players who have some smarts can survive in multiplayer servers alone just fine. If you don't want to engage, you just keep on the move. Ofcause there are many different dedicated servers with different rule sets, limitations or mods that even provide more options. So usually there is something for everyone.

Damn, I’m so excited and fearful at the same time. Space Engineers 2 with the VRAGE3 engine has so much potential but after the dumpster fire that was Kerbal Space Program 2 I’m terrified of promising sequels.

For me its like first person Command and Conqurer, where you get to build the costructions and statagize.

Space engineer for me is one of those title that are on a category of their own, Minecraft / skyrim / wow ect truly close to a masterpeace if it weren't for some limitation in the code.

It helps that the DLCs are about $5 US... They're not charging us for a whole new game just to give us a few extra toys to play with.

4,000 hours in Space Engineers... "Minecraft in Space" is an apt description of the game.

I bought in the gam eat early access and loved the fact from the very start you could do whatever you wanted i'd played about 7,900 hours in 4 years. Over the least 5 years they've turned the game into more of a hardcored survival mode with the stone mining and rare resources and due to that i've put in less then 1,000 hours since. They've lost their way by adding progression in a game where what made it unique was that it didn't have progression.
@Yukimaru02 ай бұрын
You can turn progression off in the world options. You really can just play the game how you want for the most part.

You forgot about Mods. Space Engineers has the best modding compatibility out of probably any game I’ve ever seen, Maybe even on par with Garry’s Mod. So if you do get bored of vanilla, You have even more creative potential with using mods Also, The Devs are extremely social with the player base, and tend to listen and communicate with us players, Aswell as they keep us hyped durring updates with teasers, and overall just keep us players entertained, (Looking at you Xocliw)
@kerngezond69532 ай бұрын
I absolutely agree with this. One reason I got bored with Space Engineers was the lack of enemies (something they are only addressing since the most recent update). Then I discovered MES and its accompanying mods and boy do I have a blast playing with them in my new server. I fondly remember adding them to a brand new savegame and looking in awe at the big ships passing over my puny base, hoping they keep their course. And if that’s too tame for you there’s always a list of more aggressive mods (like Reavers if you want an enemy that’s basically a bunch of berserking lunatics).

It took me 6 years to put 600 hours into no mans sky. I dropped 2000 hours into Space Engineers the first 6 months i had the game, and now im about to break the 11,000 hour mark. Representing Stone Industries.

Holy crap, how the hell do you do that? That’s more time per week than a full time job! I love Space Engineers more than anything else but if I played that much my brain would melt and my body would atrophy. O.o

If you want the survival element into the game, you need to play Stationeer's..

I played SE on & off since it came to Early Access and always had a blast with it (sometimes literally 😉). I last played it for a longer period up to 2022, when i stopped due to other interests. After SpaceX's Mechazilla landing however i got the urge to play it again and coincidentally just then the Contact update dropped, which required a new game start anyway; so i fired it up again and it's definitely better than ever 😍 Here's to at least 10 more years of playing 😁👍

Thanks to this video, I checked out the game, which I own since the first day of early access. TIL I have a special key that includes all DLC that ever came out or will come out, meaning I have all the shiny new things. Guess the long Halloween Weekend is saved.

As a huge SE fan, I always use "Minecraft in space" to tell people the basics of the game. Its easier than sounding like a massive nerd.
@aurenian8247Ай бұрын
It is minecraft in space. Especially now with the new PvE stuff they just added. Like minecraft, you get out of it what you put in. Some people fluff around for a couple of hours and decide it's not for them. Some people sink thousands of hours into the game. Making a build that does a job well and looks good while doing it is so satisfying. When you get a bunch of like minded people together with some self imposed rules and a scenario in mind this game really shines.
@DUEL.FATALISАй бұрын
I’ve had the game for a long time but I couldn’t figure out really what to do. Is the PVE an official update? I think that’s what the game was missing for me.
@aurenian8247Ай бұрын
@@DUEL.FATALIS Yes the latest update added end game PvE in space as well as encounters you can find on the planets. The older pirates may show up and shoot you up a bit with gatlings, but the new factorum enemies have all the weapons from the warfare 2 update and are happy to use them.

As long as the game remains receiving updates. People who like it will keep playing it. Age is not a relevant thing for games, as long as the developer maintains and improves it.
