The way she spoke about those “people living in the projects” as if they were beneath her, as if she was embarrassed to be associated with them. So sickening to have such distaste towards your own people and culture. All for the appraisal of a white man… (allegedly 😉)

They love to clown on us Years ago, I worked as a supervisor in a Texas call center. One day, a customer from NYC with a PhD called in about some issue. The poor agent who answered the phone had the misfortune of getting him. All she said was "Hello". Didn't even get to say anything else. But since she was born and raised in Texas, she sounded country. She was a good agent, but he didn't want to "take a chance with an idiot Southerner". For reasons I will never figure out, he demanded to speak to a supervisor. He got me. Went on this whole monologue about how he can't stand to speak to Southerners and how he'd avoid us all if he could. My Southern twang isn't as strong as most (I'm from VA), but you best believe I used my strongest Southern accent with the biggest words in my vocabulary. Later, I asked him what his PhD was in. His answer? English. If only he saved his money and got a PhD in decency.

I’m so happy I found this channel! I am a 24 yr old black woman and I have been feeling suffocated and isolated in my career. I am a graduate student studying clinical psychology and I am the only black person in my cohort of 8 people. At my job I am the only black person. I am also from the south and the “hood”. Learning to code switch was not easy for me and it has run a toll on me. I think this is because the “hood” is not just a dialect and it can come with a mindset. For me the mindset has been the hardest to break. Watching these videos help me realize what I am up against and have helped me be more accepting and patient with myself. I am also proud of the fact that I’ve been able to remain true to myself and my dialect regardless of other opinions. I code switch with intent and even then my dialect pops out! 😂 I’ve held myself responsible to remaining true to myself in an environment that was not really made for me to feel accepted and I’m proud of that. Thank you Sunn m’Cheaux!

I do think she’s knows what she’s doing because I think she sees herself as better than her audience. That said, I’ve actually come across individuals in my profession trying to convince me that they “don’t have a dialect”…whilst speaking in that dialect. Their feelings are rather hurt when I explain their own speaking characteristics to them, which causes them to immediately try to pronounce certain words differently. Only to find…they simply can’t… If code switching is an art, some of y’all just ain’t that creative. Because ain’t nobody buying that painting.

Ironically, she was self-conscious about her accent since she was from the DR. I never really noticed her accent until she would bring up how she hated it and wanted to drop the accent whenever she spoke English. (Even was taking classes for it.) I'd encourage her and say that I really liked how her voice sounded and that she didn’t need to change it. I totally love this video. Variety is the spice of life. My voice, your voice, and everyone else's voices (I'm also referring to not only the sound of someone's voice, but also their thoughts) matter. ❤

I've been wondering this for a while, but seeing as you're a firm believer in that language should be molded by those who speak it and not restrict the growth and development of culture and creed alike, are there any grammatical faux pas that DO irk you?

Hating yourself (or your community) is no excuse you be cruel to others. *I just realized this kinda made it sound like I'm saying it's okay to hate yourself and your community, I'm not and it's not. Accept yourself and you'll be better able to love others.
