I’ve listened to Colin for 10 years. I’m as left leaning as they come. The man is not a “fascist” or a “racist” as many in the industry accuse him of being. He’s simply a conservative (he actually describes himself as being more left-leaning and populist now, while still holding conservative ideals). We’re talking about a guy who left the Republican Party over Donald Trump in 2016. We’re talking about a guy who’s been dating a black woman for more than a year. Since you made this video, he’s since stopped posting on Twitter due to people in the industry trying to cancel him on an almost monthly cycle and only uses it to advertise his business. He’s admitted his rhetoric in the past was harsh and he’s taken active steps to tone that down. Regardless, thanks for being able to understand nuance and doing your own research.

I’m left/left-center and have listened to him since, god, I don’t even know how long. Has Colin said some stuff that is not white washed to hell? Yeah but that’s how humans are built. I think it has less to do with Colin’s political leanings or whatever and more to do with how he just doesn’t give a fuck. People who are unapologetic like that often get caught in the cross hairs. I’m a very outspoken person and boy has it gotten me into hot water before. It’s happened at jobs, with friends, with family. People who speak their minds can upset the general masses. In an industry like video games where it’s expected that it’s all apolitical and “easy listening”, Colin sticks out like a sore thumb.

Possibly another thing to keep in mind, especially those who don't live in America, is that he is from Long Island. This is to say that his blunt matter-of-fact manner of speaking comes from where he grew up. Everyone I know from the northeast, especially near the city talk like this. So some things he says can seem more abrasive than they actually are meant to in the main. But if you're in the U.S. this is generally common knowledge and (in conversation at least) is looked at as normal and someone just having a conversation. Being from the South it'd be a similar kind of thing if someone in the South was being overly nice to you in a conversation. As someone from the south as well I know that means they are basically belittling you based on their tone. Anyway, in Colin's case, it's this but with a neutral connotation.

I find that politicization has occurred across society not even just on social media, this may be just in the US because I live there, and it is so frustrating to deal with. I've always respected Colin as a well-informed, honest journalist. A couple years after Kinda Funny was formed, Colin started in being a bit more vocal about his views, which is, of course, his right. I still respected his opinion within the gaming space, even if I disagree with a large amount of his political views. NOTE: I may disagree with many of his opinions, but he is always articulate, and typically backs up his views with actual facts. Here in the US, there's a chain of restaurants called "Chik-Fil-A", which are owned and operated by ultra-Christian/Conservative people. That is what it is, though after it came to light that they routinely donate profits to anti-gay lobbyists, many opted not to patronize them. When this was just after its height, he ate Chik-Fil-A and made a show of it on Twitter. I replied, mildly annoyed that he would act in opposition to supporting the gay community. Colin responded with something amounting to "It's just a sandwich," and blocked me. Looking back, we were both wrong. Fact is, it WAS just a sandwich. Colin didn't shout, "DOWN WITH GAYS!" while he ate it, or anything. I think it was a poor choice of him to make to publicize it. I do think that the very concept of "cancel culture" and "political correctness" are abhorrent in the way they are used. If you don't like what someone is saying in a video game, album, stand up comedy, film, KZbin, whatever - you can just not listen/watch/engage. Sure, outwardly militant racist or anti-LGBTQIA+ material, as an example, crosses a line. I think that Colin is a true Conservative, inasmuch as he is a true believer in personal freedom. I've never seen him say anything against marginalized groups directly, and seems to want people to be able to live their lives. Along those lines, I think that he is advocating for freedom of expression, particularly in video games. I can't say that I blame him for wanting to do that. Thing is, he could stand to be a hell of a lot less dickish when he does it. At the end of the day, I would say to Colin what my mother said to me for decades: "It's not what you say; it's how you say it."
@user84074
@user84074 3 жыл бұрын
"Cancel culture" is just American freedom of speech. You are free to express your views, and those who disagree are allowed to stop doing business with you. 🤷‍♂️ And the Chick-fil-A thing is such a cop out for him. Imagine if Apple came out and said something like "All Lives Matter" and then the next day I show me investing my whole savings account into Apple stocks. Me saying it's "tOtAlLy UnReLaTeD" is the equivalent of a kid putting their hand in your face and going "I'm not touching you!"

Hey man, first of, this was great and I have an enormous amount of respect for the way in which you conducted this video and explored the ideas discussed. On the baby comments, while I appreciate its slightly inflammatory phraseology, in the context of its usage I think its actually apt. He's discussing university students, who presumably have entered in to further education to explore new ideas and take on new information, preventing speakers from sharing their ideas at their institution. Critically, attendance for this talk was not mandatory and they could simply not attend but instead, they kicked up a fuss and prevented those who would be interested in hearing what he had to say from having the opportunity. This to me is not only selfish but resembles the kind of tantrum an infant would throw. Therefore, while certainly disparaging, I think the usage of the term is completely appropriate for conveying his opinion. I'm not a Milo fan, I think he's largely a troll and wouldn't take much of what he has to say seriously, but not my place to decide who else should have the opportunity to hear him speak any more than its 'the babies' at this college. TL;DR - The term 'baby' is somewhat contemptuous but he's using it to describe juvenile, contemptuous behaviour. It's therefore appropriately conveying the sentiment.
@TheSneezingMonkey
@TheSneezingMonkey 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. And I do see your point. But to me it looks like he’s reacting to the students ‘tantrum’ with his own tantrum. By being inflammatory. If he would ‘just not attend’ the event, why does he not simply ’not comment’ on the matter. Which is the equivalent of not attending in my opinion. It’s like he points his finger at them, and then kinda does the same thing. To be very honest, even he is not a fan of Milo, I think his comment were not so emotional because ‘opinions are censored’. It’s because conservative right leaning opinions are being shut down. And he doesn’t like that. But that’s just my opinion and speculation. Your points are equally valid. Thanks for sharing them.

I can imagine. That’s not a smart thing to say. I think waay too many people struggling to walk in someone else’s shoes. They don’t experience significant discrimination so they have a hard time imagining that it’s very real for others. It’s a lack of empathy. I once read an interesting example that can maybe help to explain. If you’re on a full train and others want in, you think “aaw there’s no more room really”. You don’t want them to enter. But if you are outside that same train you think “common make some room in there”. That’s the same person, but the person inside can not relate to the problem the person outside has. You ignore them because it’s easier. So unless you are able to reflect about situations like that, you will act as if privilege doesn’t exist. As if discrimination doesn’t exist. It’s disturbing. I don't know if youtube can read minds these days or if people are searching for more information on Colin after watching him to interview Filip Miucin. I am certain that I don't know even a fraction of what is happening or has happened in Colin's life. Still, I have listened to Colin since IGN Beyond days and in my personal opinion, Colin most likely won't stop provocatively participating in controversial topics since he has already lost so much because of those topics and the reactions. And if that day does come, it has to come from him in his own terms. Well, at least mostly. I wouldn't be surprised if all this had a left a big trauma in Colin, although it all seems so minor based on his Twitter posts. I wish Colin all the best and I hope he does come in terms with the whole situation and can set aside some more personal feelings. There is another way, but ultimately Colin must find it himself. Luckily Colin has the community to support and guide him in the journey, not to mention his family and friends.

Colin is incredibly well informed when it comes to US history and surrounding politics. i always respect his views even though i may not agree with him at every turn, he has always provided logic to his reasoning. I think there are 2 big components here: first is conflating outrage and "poor taste" and the second is attacking people instead of ideas. Let's look at Colin's infamous joke since I think it's a good proxy for this whole thing. Colin has a big platform and the opportunity to inspire a lot of people. He wasted that opportunity at the expense of making a joke that wasn't honestly all THAT funny. So a lot of people called him out on it basically saying "hey man, do better". When a lot of people criticize you it can feel much worse than it actually is. Obviously there were people being rude or mean to Colin about this joke but I think the vast majority of his peers weren't mad, just disappointed he didn't do better. For the second part, Colin is often falling into this trap of correctly pointing out bad ideas but instead of stopping at the idea he turns it into a personal attack by calling large groups of people (and individuals) babies or idiots. A lot of problems could be avoided by spending more time on why the idea is no good and avoiding the personal attacks. I have heard him say so many times "I would love to have this person on my show to talk about this but they won't because they know their argument is weak"... is the reason because their argument is weak or is it because you just spent 5 minutes personally attacking them? I like Colin and hold many different beliefs than he does. He challenges me to think differently and when he is on his A game he can be really kind and understanding. I don't think he has ever made a comment that made think he honestly hates anybody but instead has made several statements that were simply in poor taste. But don't we all at some point or another? We should hold him to a high standard because he has the ability to influence so many people and he is just such a smart and capable dude.

My thoughts - I'm a fan of Colin where gaming is concerned. When other parts of his personality come through it can sometimes be a tad infuriating. 1 example, nock back podcast he does with his brother, they spoke of their upbringing and Colin was completely dismissive of his brothers issues growing up just constantly saying he was the one who had it worse, multiple times he would mention this in different ways. He has a "poor me" mentality at times and a personality that is hard to like I feel. But saying all that I listen to sacred symbols week in week out so go figure.

I just watched your video. But my opinion is that people blow everything up just to take Colin down. They want something negative, so they make something small, something big in a negative way. Colin has a target on his back just like example naughty dog. Naughty dog is one of the best developers out there. Just like Colin is one of the best podcasters out there. On that moment people start to target you (because of jaloezie...). So they will explode every little thing they can to take you down. With ND, all these negative people jumped on the train, starting to talk shit about the game, without even have played the game. For me, it doesn't make any sense. But unfortunately that's how a lot of people are. I do agree with you that people should mind there own businesses more, and that would avoid a lot of negative BS. But on the other hand, stop whining so fast. The moment Colin does something completely out of proportion, everyone will know, and there wouldn't be questions asked about why this and why that like now. No, they will burn him to the ground. But that moment will never come, because Colin will not do something like that. And if you say, what about that joke, and this and that. It didn't mean anything. We all know that, some people just saw an opportunity, but they failed and will keep failing! That's a fact!

You're not wrong, but the problem is that if even if ND were a shitty developer they would be praised, lauded and awarded anyway by the industry, because of their "stunning and brave" politics. While a deserving studio will be put down for not having the right kind of politics (like it happened to Days Gone, which is a far better game than gaming journalists would want you to believe). And thanks to those journalists Sony has cancelled the sequel and effectively dismantled Bend studio. What I mean is that there is a huge inbalance in power: the people that hate CM can destroy his carrier, while the people that hate ND can't do shit, in fact, the more they hate ND the more it will be propped up by the industry.

My issue with Colin only came during the "joke incident". While the uproar was unwarranted for a dad joke, Colin responded with a tweet saying that his gf thought it was funny, anyone who took offense was a humorless sack of sh!t. He was a business owner who had employees he was responsible for, and he dug in on a joke instead of thinking of the PR and the people's whose live were dependent on the company he represented. He walked away from the company and put Greg in a really tight spot. Greg got a load of crap from the part of the community that loved Colin, he had to buy out Colin's part of the company. He had to take over the whole of the cost of their apartment when Colin decided to move out... all over a joke. Then Colin was so shocked when Greg didn't want to get drinks with him later on. I liked Colin, I miss the colin/Greg connection, but as an older adult who has responsibilities and has people depending on me, Colin's temper tantrum over a joke and the backlash over a joke made me realize that he's just a toxic individual. Until he comes out and apologizes for what he did and the amount of venom he caused in the community he built, he's blacklisted from my podcast list.

A great video i have to say , very impressed. Imo Colin suffers from the same problem all of us do. Hes human. Unfortunately his mistakes are magnified and he more than likely doesnt have a social media expert looking over his tweets like most of the gaming industry. I also believe he is blacklisted for not being a part of the advertising process like IGN, like Kinda Funny etc etc. Its hard to find people out there with large followings and opinions on media that actually pay for those pieces of media. Colin may not follow conform to whats popular or do sponsored videos on games etc , but at least i know his opinion is genuine and never doctored by being paid by a faceless entity that may blacklist you if you dislike their game.

I’m really glad you did a video on this, as it’s something I’ve been confused by for years, and you really hit on something for me in this video: that there are two Colins. There’s the calm intellectual that you see when Colin talks to someone in person, and there’s the raving old man shaking his fist at the world on Twitter. I think what Colin, and the people who clash with him on Twitter lack in general is empathy for each other. Sure, maybe you are confident you disagree with someone, but try to understand where they’re coming from anyways. Sometimes even if someone makes a bad argument, if you look deeper, you can understand and agree with a kernel of truth within that argument which is the reason they’re fighting for it, even if their argument is overly emotional or poorly constructed. Colin doesn’t look for that kernel of truth, he just does what many small-minded people do: lump the opinion into a category in order to dismiss it. “Oh, you think opinion x? Well opinion x belongs in the ‘political correctness’ category so I will put it there and think about it no further. And throw in an insult for good measure,” instead of taking each situation as unique and trying to understand the other side. It’s generalizing vs critical thinking, which is what small-minded people do, and it’s unfortunately what raving Twitter Colin does. It’s hard to believe that intellectual Colin exists within the same person sometimes.

Hearing all of these things brought up at the same time kind of makes me feel like people might think he's an undercover racist/sexist. People will say just because his opinion differs doesn't make him those things. But it's what he chooses to critique that makes it seem that way...and granted the time he was raised in is different from today it just comes off as a bit messed up when he makes slick remarks about real issues that people deal with. With all that being said there must be some underlying things people have seen that we don't know about. But I know older people who think the same way and can't accept change or think everyone is soft because people are more offended today then they were back then. As a black man the same thing could be said about Dave Chappelle like his jokes in his old shows and Sets are funny but wouldn't fly nowadays due to how sensitive society is. I used to love watching Kinda Funny, especially around E3. I am not and have never been a fan of Colin, but watching him expose how disgustingly fake and disingenuous Kinda Funny is, was a real joy to behold. Colin literally became a millionaire overnight when he opened up his own Patreon so I'll never feel sorry for him monetarily. He has made a name for himself in an industry that is toxically woke to the point of it's downfall, and with his views, he is like a kite in a hurricane. Greg was barely tolerable anyway, but he showed his true colors when Colin tweeted about Women's Day. That was incredibly hypocritical given all the "toxic" things he's said about women on the Kinda Funny show. He was never a true friend to Colin, and made it the perfect opportunity for that insufferable beta male Tim Gettys to take Colin's spot. Haven't watched them since. And to your point about him engaging with these people online: That's his choice and I believe people like him need to. For example, you said he shouldn't have given the lady any platform by not replying to her about her Horizon comments. She already had a platform and it was made bigger by Greg reading it out on the show. He had a right to and should have reacted to it. You seriously misunderstand or underestimate the left and the power they have on social media. If people do not call these crazies out on their insanity, they always get their way. Thats why The Last of Us 2 happened, and it will only get worse. The gaming industry (just like Hollywood) is collapsing because it has fully chosen a side that does not represent the majority and actually is adversarial to the majority. They are not inclusive.

I appreciate the video, but I would disagree with the point that it's best to ignore things you find obnoxious. Personally I worry that *too many people* doing that is one big reason political correctness seems to be getting worse. And I think the ideal position, if you have the energy for it, is to normalize the less-represented side of the discussion. In my view, the only thing Colin is doing wrong is being too emotional in his reactions. It would be best to be as calm and rational as possible, and he 'loses his cool' to some extent.

I don’t think there is a debate on whether or not the first attempt at a joke was right or wrong. It was dumb and a bad idea and so poorly timed, and he defended the choice by saying his girlfriend thought it was funny. Like his girlfriend was the representative of all women, and him saying that is like a racist saying, “I have a black friend”. He should’ve just said he was sorry and some wouldn’t forgive, but we’re all human and we make mistakes. Since then he really has played the victim like a champ, forgetting it was his dumb mouth and inability to apologize that put him there. Continuing to push him out seems extreme for just those comments mentioned, but that’s up to people to decide. We do have free speech, but not free of consequence.

Colin is being completely normal. Ask yourself “if this was 2010 would you even have made this video” we are all sick of are franchises being destroyed by snowflakes and more have to speak out. Why should the American extreme far left destroy are freedom of speech and censor everything. One point you missed is Colin is under fire every single day and sometimes even the best of us would snap. You yourself seem in at least some level that you support cancel culture? So to sum it up, we need more people speaking out about this because it’s so bad even top comedians have said comedy is dead because of cc

I don't think you know how freedom of speech works. You are not being censored. People can say whatever they want, but that doesn't mean you are free of the consequences. If you tell your boss they're stupid, you'll get fired. It's simple. He expressed his views and people who disagree stopped doing business with him. He wasn't censored, he still has a podcast. 🤷‍♂️

I feel like Colin is just a troll that likes to stir the pot, but then can't handle the backlash and then becomes the perpetual victim and then milks his audience for sympathy and money. I have often said that the way he left Kinda Funny was almost premeditated because he didn't get his way when they decided to combine with RT and thought it was his best way to make a quick buck while also getting his percentage of the company fully paid out to him. I often think people overestimate his actual intelligence because he puts on a façade that he is a well balanced intellectual but all he does is troll and shit post on twitter and then has a cry about being cancelled while sharing a link to his patreon.

Listening to Colin talk about politics as someone involved in politics is like watching a medical drama with a doctor, or a war movie with a soldier, or a law movie with a lawyer. There's so many things he says that sound true or logical that hold zero water if you have more than a surface level understanding of the topic. Knoll's Law helps with understanding this phenomenon

I'd never heard of him and found this vid while tryna look up what he's done. I get the very strong impression he holds some very typical bigoted conservative opinions that sometimes slip out in these little insult tweets where he calls people babies or makes fun of Kaepernick. I think he's smart enough not to voice his true opinions too publicly but he's good at backpedaling and making it look like he's just an intellectual with a "different opinion". It all comes back to the base fact that "conservatives" are in the same pool as neo Nazis, Klansmen, religious extremists, etc here in the United States and putting yourself anywhere near those people politically is a bad look

Oddly Colin shields his audience from or at least doesn't complain to his audience about most of the attacks he faces from within the industry. Occasionally he pulls back the curtain (Bob Mackey). The interesting part is some of the male feminists in the legacy games media end up themselves accused of the very abuse they proclaim to oppose. In addition, those who claim to oppose modern imaginary WWII bad guys they themselves have revealed themselves to be quite anti-semitic especially recently. Unfortunately you're suggesting a reason based strategy for dealing with an emotionally driven hive mind.

This is mostly just tone policing dude. It's just pointless because it's way too subjective and doesn't necessarily connect with any underlying principle. You can support something genuinely horrific in a polite manner, or you can support something completely reasonable and moderate but in an aggressive and rude manner. This kind of analysis allows really bad actors to essentially get under your radar by simply dressing their agenda up in the right terminology and euphemism.

I love this video! As a fan of KFG in recent years and a new listener to Sacred Symbols, I was genuinely confused, and this helped out some. I find Colin says a lot of very intelligent, balanced things on SS, but also flies off the handle about subjects he thinks he knows well, but actually knows fuck-all about. He rails about Communism but fails to see that it's commonly the refuge from Imperialism - such as in Vietnam, where the US went to "war" because of French imperialism. I'm not saying communism WORKS - but Ho Chi Minh was literally a hero to the people of their country - he's like their George Washington. He wrote passionately about the people of Vietnam forming their own government free of outside influences. But to Colin, communism is just a bogeyman. He stops being thoughtful and just slings insults. It's weird.

I think you're right that Colin could be more tactful and let things go, but I think you're a little over-critical on the points he's communicating. Colin Kaepernick is a communist-sympathizer that idolizes Fidel Castro. Colin's point was right that Colin Kaepernick shouldn't be respected as a commenter on oppression. Using humor to make that point is actually great in my opinion. On the last point, Andy Ngo is a journalist and is definitely not a fascist or deserving of being assaulted. Colin rightfully pointed out the Antifa use fascist tactics, and that beating up press/journalists is completely unacceptable. Your points on that honestly came across as victim-blaming, saying that Andy Ngo shouldn't have been surprised at being punched. Anyway, thanks for the thoughtful summary - you brought up a lot of good points and succinctly summarized where the hate for Colin comes from, while also showing that it's totally unreasonable.

Wow, I figured it would have already been brought up in the comments, but it hasn't been mentioned yet. Gamer Gate. Iirc, somehow Colin got mixed up in all that BS, and he wasn't on the "right" side. Since then, a certain group of people declared war on him..idk maybe after all these years of interacting with the hard left he realized that there's nothing anyone can do about that bunch. It doesn't matter how you speak to them, if you try to be respectful and kind and compassionate, sympathetic or empathetic, it doesn't matter to them. You can't win in a world that let's them make up the rules as they go on. Only Colin can answer the questions in this video, but idk, maybe he's sick and tired of political correctness, and the fact that he had to watch the industry that he, himself, helped build, only for it to be swallowed whole by pc culture. and that no artist in America right now has complete artistic freedom like they did a decade ago. It was a good video, btw.
