I think the fundamental reason why so many people hate on Mori Calliope is because that's kind of the point of a lot of things she says and does. She uses a lot of self-deprecating humor on stream and in her songs, her songs are full of confrontational 'to the haters' lines, she's very counter-culture and rebellious such as having a cool slummy alcoholic persona instead of a cute perfect idol persona, and many other things where her behaviors invites haters to engage with her. And I think there are 2 reasons why she does this: 1) she has a lot of self hatred and tries to deflect criticism to herself by being the first to dish it out (like Rabbit aka Eminem in the final 8 Mile rap battle), and 2) she is used to being hated and would rather attract all of the haters towards herself than let them come at her friends such as the other idols in Hololive. This second point I think is particularly wholesome and what I really like about Calli. She's sort of a self-sacrificing friend in a somewhat unhealthy but otherwise really heartwarming way. Kind of like how Coco deliberately made that jab at Taiwan after Haachama did, it was to defend Haachama from criticism by drawing it to herself.

Unlike most vtubers, who wisely shy away from these topics, she confronts haters by calling them out. Calli decided to apply to hololive, her old friends just became petty and vindictive because they chose to find 9-5 jobs instead and are jealous of her success. Even someone as early as Suisei had a contract drafted when she entered the same branch as Azki. Point is, crticizing people for wanting to make cash to survive is just... really detached.

I don't have a problem with people saying they dislike Calli's music, what does annoy me however is when people try to pass their opinion off as a fact. Still remember some dude on reddit saying "She's a vtuber (who is notorious for making horrible songs)" and then I had to go on an argument with him about how his opinion isn't a fact. Dude kept calling me a wierdo and a creep after I showed him the support /likes / views those songs made instead of actually making an arguement.

Honestly her origin story adds even more GAP appeal in my book. Shes like that gifted sports anime protagonist that discovers their love of the game as they develop and improve. Along the way she found true comrades that push her to improve and vice versa. She found role models, and rivals, and friends. Even if she didnt know what she was signing on for, she wasnt fake, she was just starting out on her journey.

Just remember that you're in the HoloEN echo chamber. Hate generally stems from ignorance, so haters aren't going to even try to get to really know Calliope. That said, she does a firm group of people who strongly dislike her due to the P3 incident with Atlus a few years back. She definitely did not apologize or show remorse for that when her personally rallied her followers to pressure Atlus, only to never pick up P3 afterwards. (She playing the remake will be a sort of test to how genuine she was.) So Americans don't think much of her "Strong personality" and like her for that. On the flipside, that means she embodies the stereotypical American arrogance which is generally disliked. Japanese especially are still much more xenophobic than English social media would like you to believe, and Calli does bring up things about becoming more Japanese, which does harbor strong resentment in Japanese viewers because she is a weeaboo and tries to appeal that she's trying, which is the incorrect approach.

I think calliope isnt completely fake, the only fake thing i can see about her is a villainous persona she puts on. Not really wanting to steal souls, not really wanting to take over the world. In the end she’s actually a sweetheart wanting to share her musical talent and give people entertainment. Shes funny, quarky, and can be silly at times. She can be a hardworking woman or a complete lovable airhead. Its what i enjoy the most about her.
