Great report. I live in The Villages and the patio villa is still the least expensive way to live in FL and have access to shopping and restaurants. Traffic is a way of life anywhere if you want to be close to commerce. Income is a factor when deciding where to live and even if it is not ideal The Villages offers homes for all price points. I could not afford retirement in the state where I grew up.

Love your honesty. We drove through the Villages to decide whether we’d want to move there. The traffic was HORRENDOUS! We would NEVER move there for that reason alone. It’s expanding WAY too much too. It’s lost it’s “quaintness” and has now become a HUGE city. Doesn’t feel like retirement to me.

I grew up in St. Petersburg in the 60's and you could drive from St. Pete to Clearwater and have 15 miles of open highway (Hwy 19). Today it is solid congestion from St. Pete all the way to Spring Hill, that's 60 miles of commercial development. That's real traffic, The Villages has about 4 months of busy traffic and the other 8 months is great. Besides, there's over 75,000 golf carts in The Villages, that's the way to travel, park the car in the garage.

We've been watching Jerry and Linda newcomers to the Villages and by accident found you. We enjoy them. I really enjoy you because as one other commenter said you don't sugarcoat and are very honest about your assessment of things. We would never move to Florida, we live in North Carolina and are not a fan of the summers here no less Florida summers. We are retired here from New York and enjoy the 4 seasons here in NC. The life style of the Villages is not our cup of tea either as we are very private people. All that being said we enjoy seeing people who enjoy their life with all the activities they partake in as it fascinates us. To each his own as they say, viva la difference!

Thank you for your kind words. The Villages is not for everyone. The summer weather can be an issue for many people. The other side to that coin is, it's a great investment, winter rentals here are at a premium, in life we all have a different destination, different ways of travel, you enjoy your travels and destinations!

Like you, we're not moving to the villages because of the heat in the summer. But I love these vlogs. When someone mentions pickleball, I think hey we have pickleball too. From what I've seen, you hardly ever see large trees in the villages.

Thanks for explaining why people buy homes in the Villages for 1 to 5 years and sell them. I often wondered why so many homes for sale were put on the market every few years. I rarely go to restaurants. Generally, restaurants are very expensive compared to cooking at home, plus the meals at home are much more healthy for you. It's a good idea to eat before you go to Disney to minimum any hunger that you might feel when you are at Disney, and take a bottle of water with you. Since you're a Florida resident, and if you go to Disney at least a few times a year, you can buy a discounted season ticket. I'd buy the cheaper season ticket, where the summers and selected dates are blacked out. It's less crowded and more comfortable during the time when the parks are less crowded too. There is a way you can stop your cellphone from ringing with the "unknown numbers" or "junk calls". If you have an iPhone 6S or newer that can be updated to iOS 13, there is an option to only ring if the number is known to you. Unknown callers must silently leave a message. Junk callers almost never leave a message. You can temporarily disable that feature if you expect a call from your doctor, after a doctor visit, or some other situation were you expect a call from a number that is not known to you. When you activate that feature, you will not be annoyed again with the "junk callers". Did you ever fix your weak WiFi problem? Typically, the WiFi device that's included by your Internet service provider has a very weak WiFi signal. If you add a strong WiFi "access point", your WiFI will be strong everywhere on your property, inside and outside of your house. You might also need to set your WiFi channel to a different WiFi channel than your neighbors use.
@Irotten5 жыл бұрын
I was getting the unknown numbers too. I have an android and set the phone to only accept calls from numbers in my contacts. Worked like a champ. If the caller calls you 2 times in 10 minutes or less it will allow it. Haven't had that happen yet but that is what I read. Don't know if Apple has that feature.
@marykelly58915 жыл бұрын
Apple has a feature where you can prevent calls at certain hours unless they call twice or are from a "favorite" that you've set up, typically your family. However, spammers have gotten smart and will call you twice within a few seconds bypassing this feature. I use the Apple App Call Prevent but that only lets you know it's a telemarketer. Then I go in and block on both my phone and on the App. Otherwise, I simply don't answer any number that's not in my contacts.
@nikkihoffman28914 жыл бұрын
Irotten Apple has the same feature. I have my iPhone set so that calls not in my contact list will not ring through. The caller can leave a message. Works great.

I was just out this morning along with my father to go to Billy's Café and all this over building / development reminded us both of a place south of Miami, FL called Kendal FL which we remember how it was in the 70s and into the 90s how it got over built and its nothing more then a Congested Traffic Jam Area and that is what the Villages and surrounding Area roads are turning into nothing but traffic Congested parking lot like Roads

I remember Kendall Fl from the mid '70's. It was far from the job but very open and clean. Built a home in a nice community and stayed until I could not stand the traffic and congestion. first off let me say that just think if we all had a lot of money , other than our health almost every you mentioned wouldn't even be a concern but most of us aren't in that category so I agree with everything you said about these places gouging the little guy . seems like EVERYBODY has their hands out for OUR hard earned money. Here in Pa. it has gotten to the point with tax's that retired people have to sell their home even if it is 100% paid off just because they can not afford to pay the school and property tax's . I am retired and my wife would like to in a few years also but what I am seeing is us only being able to afford a small one bed room apartment somewhere cheaper , and one car also . Sad state of affairs here in the richest country on planet earth when people have to work to 80 just to afford health insurance . I am 65 and never remember my parents having this problem ... Five generations of my family have lived on my property. Every trip to my mailbox I have at least one letter/postcard/handwritten plea to buy said property. I love the PEOPLE(for the most part) who've moved to my neighborhood. I do not like gentrification. Poorly built McMansions and crappy restaurants may raise the property value, but it has stolen the soul of my beloved town. The Villages treat the actual locals like peasants. Mow our yard, pick up our trash, then go away without being seen(until the hastily built Gardinia model house falls apart and we need you).

Apparently, they think if a person can afford to watch a movie they must be rich!! I remember buying a bag of chips for $5.00 at a cinema and a quarter of the bag was just air. If you try to buy food outside and bring it in, they will stop you from taking it into the movie, even if it is identical to what they sell. a similar thing happens at live shows and sporting matches. Have not been there but these folks are not “swingers” or “wild and crazy” but really enjoy their time there. They bring Family down all Winter. Personally, I think it is fun to have Folks think that it is just Crazy down there. I have to be able to fish fresh and saltwater all year long. Mobile Home/Trailer is fine for me so long as my boat is in the water and within my view. Enjoying your videos, insight and knowledge. Ok, you can go back to your Swinging lifestyle!!! Wink, wink. Hope your back feels better quickly. Oh, and Thank You for your Service to this Country. Be well.

Stick to your guns Skip, we stopped ordering drinks with meals entirely because 2 simple drinks (iced tea, soda etc.) are now the price of an entire meal! Sheeple stop following the heard & stop paying high prices and they will drop.

I don't think I'd like it either. I like the neighbors at a distance. When they get too close, there's going to be trouble of some kind...Yikes those food prices sound high. Maybe the Villages is for extroverts....

Skip what I’m told ,hearsay, is that the businesses in the villages have to pay a premium for being in the Villages,sort of like the mafia getting paid.

The fact is the buisness rent inside the villages is inline with all buisness rentals in Florida...

You mention that several homes around you are frequently unoccupied for extended periods of time. Is there a problem with break ins and burglaries as a result of this?
@lizzijansen65274 жыл бұрын
67Endgame No, we rarely have vandals. Very safe. Cameras at all gates capture the plates of vehicles going in and out of each village area. We also have Community Watch driving around frequently.....those guys must get bored, not much happens. We are growing, no doubt about that. It’s still an awesome place to live.

hey Skip ,, love your untarnished truth about the Villages... the wifey and I are planning to retire soon... 2-3 yrs... and "I " would like to know where you store your RV... I ask because I would like to store my low height utility trailer in garage... I use it for my large radio controlled planes... what would be your advice on this subject? I trust only you for this matter... thanks!!! Noah

Do people in the villages develop strong friendships and socialize? I have many close friends where I live and we get together every week or two. Our spouses are involved in these friendships. I would hate to trade that for people who come and go, are away for months at a time, and who sell and move after a few years.
@TheVillagesSkipSmith4 жыл бұрын
Sure they do... Friends can be made anywhere you live. Here remember most of us are retired so we have the time to socialize more

Be honest. Are the villages in decline? Seems like anything good in the U.S, "they," want to ruin it in some way .. Are the original owners still in charge?
