Commitment bias is such a powerful thing. One of my favorite stories is about an economics professor who would do this experiment on his class at the beginning of every school term. It's so deviously elegant. He would simply pull out a twenty dollar bill and auction it to his class. The only rules were that bidding had to be in increments of a dollar (otherwise the whole thing would simply be splitting pennies) and, more importantly, the highest bid won the money, BUT the second highest bid also had to pay him what they bid. So what would happen is all these young business students would think they could beat the system and bid low, but about five dollars in, they realize it's a trap. Everyone that can realizes they need to back out, but the two bidders at the top are now stuck in this game of chicken, where neither wants to be the sucker that just loses money. So they'll continually outbid each other, because at least the $20 reward of winning can recoup some of their losses. The ridiculous thing is, it doesn't slow down after they pass $20 bids -- it actually speeds up because the stakes escalate. The professor has stated that he has never lost money playing this game. Commitment bias is _that_ powerful.
@Anonymous-vh6kp7 жыл бұрын
The smart students will know that the best course of action would be to bid $1 and share the profits equally. But the dumb students will ruin this opportunity out of greed. Thanks for sharing this story!

Anonymous hard to convince everyone to do that for what would essentially be trading pennies for dimes. It's not _that_ much money..

"Deviously elegant" seems dramatic. It's called the "dollar auction" and it's been around since time immemorial. Some say, on nights just like this, you can actually hear their bets increasing.

My mom once wasted like an hour of a phone scammer's time because her english is so bad she couldn't spell her name when trying to pronounce letters in english. And when the guy finally got everything right, he asked for her credit card's security code, and she was like "oh but that's private, sorry. No can do!" The guy got furious and hung up, thinking he got trolled, while she actually believed him. She supposedly got free tickets to Euro-Disney land, which we were going to buy tickets for soon anyway, so ofc she believed him. Lol.

There's a whole hobby called scambaiting about wasting phone and email scammer's time and sometimes even disrupting them by tracking them down, installing backdoors and viruses into their computers to lock them out and reporting them to the authorities. (The cops often are in on it or do nothing) Some notable scambaiting channels on KZbin include Jim Browning, Kitboga, IRLRosie, and Trilogy Media.

When I was a junior in high school 4 years ago, I was contacted by a Nigerian scammer pretending to be a Chinese banker named Hong Xu. I created a new email address and posed as the brother of the original, now "deceased" recipient. My character ran a funeral puppetry service called Mourning Wood (I was and am proud of that) and was eager for a kickstart loan in the form of Hong Xu's money. He must have been a newbie, and/or had a really poor grasp of English (and thus detection of English sarcasm) because I managed to bait him for a while. I created emails for my character's attorney and an FBI agent too. I should dig those up. I'm sure I still have them.

I was scammed by a little old lady. At my first job which was at a farmers market, she came up late on a sunday in what looked like church clothes. She said she had just been at her husbands funeral, and missed going to the bank, but she had a check from her daughter for $100 she needed to cash, or she wouldn't have enough gas to get home, which was an hour away. And would I please give her $100. She said she would write me a check I could cash on tuesday after she put her check into the bank on monday. This was before online banking and ATMs you could put a check in. I felt bad that she had just lost her husband, and she was a cute old lady so I wasn't suspicious. I gave her the cash, and never even thought anything was wrong until I went to cash the check, and the bank teller said it was a totally fake check, the routing #'s were made up, name was fake. Worst part was I took that $100 out of the register, and it came out of my check. My boss was pissed but felt bad, so he didn't fire me.

My kindness has certainly been taken advantage of as well, falling for sob stories and giving strangers the benefit of a doubt. The way I see it, we should take pride that we did the right thing if everything in their story was true. We should continue to follow our morals and do the right thing. Of course, we are wiser now and should be a bit more skeptical when approached for help by strangers.

I don't know where this is coming from maybe the run GameStops differently where you live? For me personally, I preordered two games from them and paid the minimum $5 for them to reserve it. I ended up getting one of these games on PC and the other I lost interest in and never bought (hence why I paid the minimum fee because I wasn't sure I'd actually buy it from GameStop.) The next time I went to the store one of their associates told me I still had those two preorders (this is several months after I should have picked them up) and they asked me if I wanted the games now. I told them no so they refunded me the credit by taking $10 off the transaction I was currently doing. That's actually the opposite of a scam, I didn't expect to get that money back and I did so props to them. That was one of the few times I felt like a retail chain actually cared about being fair.

As a Nigerian there are five rules to these scams as they also target native Nigerians.. 1. Ask a lot of questions. 2. Do not give away personal details or credentials. 3. The scam is usually aimed at making you think you have a limited time at an opportunity so stall and waste the time,they'll keep pestering you even after the supposed time has passed. 4. When you've confirmed it's a scam from the poor grammar and other pointers,laugh your ass off and delete. 5. Ignore,delete and spread the word.
@danhinchliffe76227 жыл бұрын
I agree except for one bit... Do NOT delete it. Keep it, call the police about and get them shut down. Since it's an e-mail the IP address can be tracked and after that they have no chance.

Its strange how women seem to fall for these scams so often. I noticed a shitload are targeted at men but mostly sex related and pretty obvious. Women falling for those long distance romances just confuse me so much seeing how long in duration they are and that nothing tangible comes out of them.
@Hakajin7 жыл бұрын
Oh, yeah, my aunt's friend had the same thing going on. Like, the guy was Italian and everything. He contacted her on Facebook, but there were no mutual contacts, which was a red flag to begin with. She was talking about marrying him. And she just would not take a hint. She'd start to get suspicious when he wouldn't send her selfies or chat with her online, but pretty soon he'd have her hooked again. Joke's on the scammer, though, because... She talks like she has money, telling people about the houses and cars she's interested in buying, but in reality, she has nothing and lives on charity. He cursed her out when she wouldn't give him any money, and she finally got sick of it. The one thing I don't get, though, is he wanted her to fly out to Texas to meet him. What's up with that? Did he want her to leave her stuff at a hotel so he could steal it?

I'm really quite ashamed of myself for not getting into Nigerian email scams at some point. I could have, like, 17 more dollars kicking around for luxuries such as a pair of fresh pineapples to dice and put on my take and bake pizza. [Yes, this was a long way around a bad joke. If you're paying for shit coverage from a garbage insurer, then sure. If you're actually paying for a good company who takes the time to discuss all of your coverage needs up-front and who prides themselves in excellent claims service, then that doesn't happen. Of course, in my experience most people find that to be too much of a nuisance and would rather rush through a 5 min quote and just pick the company with the lowest price possible. It's the quintessential example of casting one's pearls before the swine. People spend all of this money on a house or a car, and then they're too lazy to protect their investment adequately because actually reading their declarations page or asking questions of the agent or insurance producer before starting the policy is too boring. You get what you pay for.

I used to work for a bank and when people had fallen for any type of scam and realised afterwards that they had probably done something foolish, they'd call up and were honestly so embarrassed. I always wondered if there were more customers out there whose pride was too significant to admit to what had happened, who just swallowed the costs they'd incurred through the fraud. (Obviously, we'd try to reassure them, sort everything out that we could, but they still usually felt pretty stupid.)

At the moment of this watching this video I'm in the middle of a game with a 419 scammer. My information is sent to them encrypted, but can only be opened with a JPG file so that my evil uncle can't steal the money promised, and they have not stopped emailing me back, even though I sent them a program that has no end, just a flash of a black screen. I can get them to open the programs I send them for the sake of it all, but I decide not to destroy their computer. Next up I'm going to make a fake news paper page where I killed my evil uncle, and from that I will changes gears and say that I need Bit Coins or USD. It should not have gotten as far as it has, yet they are not backing down.

My grandmother got a scam phone call from one of these “lotteries”, and she had fun by messing with them. She told them she’d go to her bank and get back to them after. The next day they call again and she says “Oh yes, I did that a week ago. Didn’t you get it?” And the guy on the other end starts cursing her out.

I saw a couple who fell victim to this when I worked at a place with a Western Union. The more I tried to tell them it was a scam and they shouldn't send the money, the angrier they got. They'd rather be out the money than admit it could be a mistake. I couldn't flat out refuse, so it got sent and reported. I have no idea if they stopped after the $300, but I never saw them again.

Another trick is that when the scammers feel like their victim has worked out they're being scammed... they'll send the victim a link to a fake bank website with a username and password and basically say "Congratulations, everything's worked, here's your money."... and the victim gets to log into the website, see an account with a few million in it and it will even let them make some transfers. Of course, the transfers don't work... and the next time they log in their account is 'frozen' because some taxes haven't been paid, or there's another fee to pay. Basically it's the equivalent of showing the victim a suitcase stuffed with cash and giving them the moment of thinking everything's worked out to motivate them to part with even more cash.

My first and only scam I ever fell for was shortly after I started using eBay. I was bidding on a Palm Treo (I know...) and lost, but then shortly after, I received an email saying that the original deal fell through because the bidder couldn't come up with the funds and that I was the second highest bidder and I could have it for my bid. It looked legit (but wouldn't pass my now highly developed keen eye) and the only thing that looked fishy was that the email had the link to the ended auction and that the email didn't match the seller's name. But I went through with it and had my mom drive me up to a liquor store (I didn't have my temps nor old enough to drink) to get a Western Union moneygram, emailed the dude the info, and then proceeded to freak out waiting for a response. I finally did receive a response something to the tune of "Great. The agent will now be dispatched to your door" and I was like "Huh? What agent? Oh shit! Am I going to get arrested for a technicality or something? No, that can't be it... Fuck! I just got scammed! Double fuck!! I have to tell my mom!" which I was arguably more afraid of than being arrested at the time lol.

A scammer contacted me through my tutoring agency just last year. It's this scam where they pose as a client and pay you for your services in advance, but they send you a check for the cost of your services and the kid's caretaker. And if you just wire over that thousand dollars of wages to the caretaker after depositing the check, you can keep the remainder, which covers your wages and a little extra for helping them out. The trick to this is that the check won't clear for a few days, so when it bounces, you've already sent your own money out of your account. I didn't end up being scammed, but I did approach it as a legitimate client for a good 2 weeks. They just made two fatal flaws. Firstly, they picked a mark that was so poor, she wouldn't have enough money to wire over until the check cleared (which of course wouldn't have happened). Secondly, they misspelled "company" on the check, which made it painfully obvious that it was a scam. I was stringing them along for a bit, amused by how many excuses they could think of for canceling tutoring sessions. But it got boring. HEADS UP: This scam has many versions, including a potential roommate who writes you a check for his/her deposit and the payment for the moving company to ship his/her car abroad, plus a little extra you get to keep for helping wire over the money to the movers. That version fooled my fairly sensible boyfriend when he was in college.

a scammer got almost $9000 from a lady I worked for telling her they were the power company on their way to shut the deli's power off. She's a novice business owner who takes on more than she can handle. After she wired the money over my statement to her was..."You don't think it is strange that they are coming to turn off the power today unless you wire them the payment?" I have been lucky enough to distinguish scammers when I use craigslist and such. To me it seems pretty obvious when it is a scam. Also the phrase "I will pay three times what you are asking if you..." is usually a pretty good clue...

There's been one time and one time only, when I almost fell for a scam... or at least I think it was a scam. This was like ten years ago. Back then, I'd been looking into getting a greencard to move to and work at the US, during which, I'd handed my phone number and e-mail to a couple fairly professional looking sites... and it didn't take long, till my phone rang. When I answered it, I had a man with an Indian accent, tell me that I'd been chosen for a greencard raffle. The guy was very nice, kept complimenting me during the phone call and a whole lot more... and then asked for my credit card number. Said they would have to bill me, not for the raffle, but for the stuff they'd be sending me... I think it was for like "USA 101" stuff, like flyers about what to do and how to make a living in America, once/if I won the raffle. It was only at the middle of reading my credit card number to them, when I realized that "Something is not right here..." and eventually cut the call. They tried calling me several times again in the coming days, but I never picked up.

Holy Crap! When I was 13 years old, back in '93, some guy approached my older brother and offered him a huge speaker. He said that it was the same ones installed in the movie theaters, the Dolby THX kind. He had an "extra" one and wanted $200. My brother being the shrewd consumer deduced that they were stolen and talked him down to $150. We didn't even try this thing out, my brother immediately turned around and sold it to his co-worker for $300. To this day we don't know if the damned thing actually worked as promised.

I once got a phone call from Jamaica claiming to be in Publisher's clearing house. They wanted me to stay on the phone and then drive to a Western Union to send them $200 to pay the fee to then go to a place to get a car and my millions. When I told them I hadn't signed up for PCH they said you can get applied by buying gas. I got transferred to a guy supposedly in the truck with the new car on the bed and some numbers to help verify with the prize people, I even got a description of the lady I was supposed to look for right down to the color of her scarf. While this conversation was going on I was on the computer looking up the phone number and how PCH contacts winners. They do none of the things this lady was telling me to do over the phone. So I called them on their shit and e-mailed all the contact information I was given to PCH to help them deal with scammers.
