Peter Frampton became an overnight sensation with the release of 1976's 'Frampton Comes Alive!,' but it seemed he had nowhere to go but down with its follow-up.
He'd established himself in the psychedelic pop-rock band the Herd and the blues-rock supergroup Humble Pie, before embarking on a solo career in the early '70s. Several albums and relentless touring followed before his big break with 'Frampton Comes Alive!'
Then, he had to try and repeat that success. Our latest edition of Doomed to Fail? reveals what happened with 'I'm in You.'

Love when a platinum record is called a failure.

"I'm in You" was a staple on AM radio in my small Canadian town in the mid-70s. It seemed the 'Frampton Comes Alive' album was what your older brother or sister owned, yet everybody that I knew had a copy of that record. When the "I'm in You" 45 record came out, I bought it. It's a legitimately great song which should have been toured in the places (in North America) Frampton had never ventured in the late 70s.

Peter Frampton being childhood friends with David Bowie is the most surprising thing I’ve heard today

I was just a kid when Frampton Comes Alive came out. So I only really knew Frampton as a Tiger Beat pin-up boy like Leif Garrett believe it or not! But once I got into my teens (at the height of New Wave) I went backwards to the 60s and earlier 70s for rock inspiration. It's then when I realized, wow, Frampton is one hell of a guitarist! And the live album is awesome! And heck, it's not his fault he looks like Farrah Fawcett.

Frampton Comes Alive is an awesome live album. It would be tough to create a worthy follow-up.

One of the greatest Albums of the 1970s. The only 8 track that I had to rebuy because I wore it out. Definitely not a failure. More like an immortalized artist that will never be forgotten.

@@r.p.mcmurphy6623 . Maybe not to critics but since it was one of the best selling live albums of all time to his fans it etched him into music history forever. He packed stadiums and sold millions of records.

I just finished Frampton’s autobiography..Like many others, he was ripped off and misled by his management. Comes Alive was a tough act to follow.

UCR, early on you set yourselves by NOT doing what other facebook and youtube uploaders did but now you're falling into the bullshit headlines trap to attract viewers. Would you consider dropping the negative clickbait since very few of these 'doomed to fail' were actually failures? Please. I drop uploaders like flies but you were special, please reconsider.

This album was considered a failure back then. I lived it and remembered it. It was a success but a quick one. After the hoopla of the title track that album had nothing more. I love the title track but when it came out it was deemed too poppy and just sort of flailed. The amount sold probably reflected more store buys than people buys and like he said it went platinum in the 90s well after anyone thought about it anymore. It was a good album but it definitely was deemed flop back then especially with the movie Sgt Peppers being a failure too. It was pretty much the end of all the Frampton hype and then the 80s came.

In 1977,frank zappa satirized,or parodied, the I'm in you song with his I have been in you song.I heard that Frampton took it with a sense of humor.then again, zappa satirized almost everything and everybody!!

I like the I'm in you and signed sealed delivered songs.overall,ok album, but nothing to write home about.with success, sometimes it seems that one year, you're a big name star with fans, limos, presidential suites at your disposal.next year, you're ignored!?

If Frampton was going to put out a bad follow-up album after "Frampton Comes Alive," he should have put out a bad rock album; instead Frampton put out a bad wimp album. I mean the fucking guy was appearing on the cover of "Teen Beats" magazine; talk about alienating your rock audience! LOL !!!!!
