saw them at southampton Gaumont during Ace of Spades tour in 1981 or 82 . i think Weapon were the unfortunate & very unpopular support band. Bands with long hair getting taken seriously was hard enough in the trendy Britain of 1981 & calling yourself Weapon was only forgivable in retrospect by beating Spinal Tap or Bad News by a few years. The folk in that theatre thought they were taking the piss at least poor souls 😃👍

Lemmy lived down the street from me, in Colwyn Bay, N Wales when I got my first and he gave me a few guitar lessons, I was 14, 15, at the time he had a good collection of blues records as I remember. I left a town an year or so later and didn't meet him again until the late 60's when I bumped into him in a club in London, he was a roadie for Hendrix at that time, we had quick chat. I never met him again sadly.

The Motorhead song "(We Are) The Road Crew" changed my life. I was a young kid taking stagecraft 101 in high school and playing in crappy garage bands, not very good at guitar because my fingers were too twitchy, but once I picked up a bass and started playing along to 1970's and 80's punk bands, I started to get pretty good, and a week after graduating high school I went on my first tour as a roadie for a hardcore band. I'm in my 30's now, and (temporarily) physically unable to tour as a roadie or as a musician, but I still play the bass, I still sing, write, and perform my own songs live, and I'm still a fucking roadie.

In '03 I randomly ended up at the Rainbow on an idle wednesday afternoon. I thought 'Well, there's no way Lemmy would show up at this hour.' Sure enough, there he came in through the back door. I took two vodka shots with my friends and mustered up the courage to go say hi. I couldn't think of anything cool to say so I just patted him on the back and smiled while we shook hands. He looked deep into my eyes and smiled. No words were spoke, but something deep was said. Thank you Lemm. I'll never forget that moment.

Lemmy was a lovely and kind but honest weirdo who lived by his heart and played the base like later thrash metal bands played rhythm guitar. For me, he truly stands out, not only as an artist (no one comes to mind who played quite like him before, during or after his time) but also as a person, a man who simply embraced the freedom to live his life the way he wanted to, didn't give a crap about money, fame or other people's opinions and hardly ever looked back. When Hollywood sold us a dream, this guy just chose what he liked and lived it like the world was an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet, and his place was right between the platters. That's the embodiment of Rock'n'Roll if there ever was one.

I saw Motorhead live one time in February 1994 at the State Theater in Detroit, MI. When they opened up for Black Sabbath on their Cross Purposes tour (Iommi-Butler-Tony Martin-Bobby Rondinelli) line-up. The main reason I went to the concert was to see Black Sabbath, and unfortunately the only Motorhead song I was even familiar with was Ace of Spades. But this was by far the loudest concert I've ever been to in my life. It was in such a small narrow concert hall, I could hardly hear anything for 3 days afterward, and you could feel the floor rumble under your feet during some of the lower bass parts in the songs. The other opening band that night was Morbid Angel, but I got there too late to see them. There was a snowstorm that day so I was late arriving. But I got there right after they got off stage before Motorhead went on. I did see Black Sabbath or (Heaven & Hell) the band name they were touring under at the time since Dio was back in the band again for the 3rd and last time, (Iommi-Butler-Dio-Vinnie Appice line-up) in March 2007 over in London, Ontario Canada at the John Labatt Arena. Unfortunately it was in such a huge arena this time, the sound and view of the stage wasn't even close to as good as when I saw the concert in 1994 at the State Theater in Detroit. The 1994 State Theater concert is my all time favorite concert I've been to. And I'll take a small bare-bones, but louder than Hell and fantastic view of the stage concert like that any day over a huge arena concert with poor sound and even worse view of the stage, like the 2007 concert in Canada. The opening bands for Black Sabbath "Heaven & Hell" were Down & Megadeth. Down I didn't care for at all, but Megadeth sounded really good even though I've never really been a fan of theirs.

They we're invited onto the stage to join the band playing there, that night. Good music and a lot of questions from the small and very appreciative audience happily answered by Lemmy and Phil. the beatles, stones, the who .............. can't go wrong with that trifecta. The who is the pinnancle of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts as listening to the late great John Entwhistle and the late great Keith Moon in seperate rooms, There is no f******g way you'd conclude they could make music together. Talented, totally unorthodox and using the bass and drums as lead instruments going off in every direction.......and it worked perfectly. Combine that with pete's songwrtiting & power chords with a killer lead vocalist and wham!! some of the most classic, balls to the wall rock music you'll ever hear.

@@pleun315 maybe in the mid sixties they were, but by 1969 The WHO were on their way to being one of best heavy rock bands in the world. At that point I don’t think The Kinks were in the same league. IMHO. I will say they were good and you have good taste. But they ain’t The WHO.

First gig with the complete line up was in the Red Lion Pub , in Sutton ,South London on the edge of Surrey , hardly glamorous Just because they were from the suburbs doesnt take away anything from them ! Well, he did say “they made great records”, which they did, up until the 80s anyway. He just didn’t think they were great live performers. I would agree, with the exception of the Mick Taylor years. Once Ron Wood came on board, they were a bore live. But, that’s my opinion and taste.

@@DON666 They didn't really play speed metal in the sense that bands like Razor, Exciter and Agent Steel would do, but Motorhead was certainly the chief influence on speed metal, essentially bridging that gap between the old rock and budding NWOBHM scenes, with the tempos and aggression of punk. That created the foundation of speed metal (and by extension, thrash) which is why Motorhead usually gets that credit. Similar to how bands like Venom and Celtic Frost influenced black metal despite not playing actual black metal.

Seriously, my worst concert ever was the Rolling Stones in 1973 in Hawaii..It was just Jagger prancing down this ramp with purple smoke billowing about..Then running back and forth shaking his body for the girls I guess..ZZ Top was the warm-up band..Blew the Stones away...
