It was also described as a monster that hunts those who don't sleep.... So mojang is most likely not changing them so people can't say they changed what the mob was voted for.

i made a minecraft feedback suggestion a long while ago where phantoms wouldnt attack you directly but instead circle you like vultures high up and then swoop down to power up other night mobs, making them more powerful and cementing the phantom as a support mob

That's actually kind of a brilliant idea. It makes them potentially more threatening, but also less of a nuisance. Change their sounds to just something like a faint whispering while circling, and then a single cry when they dive in and power mobs up, and that could make for a much more interesting encounter. Something that you'd still _want_ to deal with, but which wouldn't be a forced distraction.

@@InfernalStudiosMC Maybe the support and vulture ideas could be phantom variants? or alternatively somehow combined into the existing idea you have in "Fairer phantoms" or made into their own unique mobs. It would be great to have more flying mobs in general, especially hostile ones. If you go with unique mobs, perhaps the vulture idea could be some kind of Big, Undead Vulture or Vulture-like mob. Maybe it could have a boss variant called a "Vulture Lich"/"Vultich" or something. No idea what it would be, but the name sort of popped into my head and thought I should share.

adding onto this: instead of phantoms just spawning after 3 you havent slept for three days (and them just spawning above you) you could make it so that for every day you don't sleep, phantoms are more likely to spawn in the world. that would make it so that the more you avoid sleeping, the more challenging mobs become because of the phantom buff mechanics. this would effectively add a difficulty curve to minecraft where players who dont like to fight mobs will sleep and thus have an easier time with them, and those who like fighting mobs will get a bigger challenge. win win

A player with the bad omen effect will encounter phantoms at night. They’re how Illagers know where you are when you enter a village.

I seriously think the Phantom should have spent a little more time in the oven. If the insomnia system was worked on more as well as the Phantom’s AI being tweaked to be funner to actually face, it could’ve been something that was much more well received. But no, instead we have Vultures with a freaky design befitting of a much more interesting mob, that spawn only after 3 days of restlessness.

Honestly the biggest thing for me would just be making them passive to player who've interacted with a bed in the last 3 days. It's super annoying to be playing on a multiplayer server and getting punished because OTHER PEOPLE refuse to sleep.

Or just making them completely unnoticeable to other players, since they are supposed to be sleep deprivation induced hallucinations after all. You just see the guy getting himself hurt, punching the air, running and screaming like a lunatic while you don't see or hear anything at all :)

A few changes I would make; When a king phantom dies, I think the other phantoms should stay alive but fly away. It just doesn't make sense that they would die. If you're worried about rewards, I think the king could just make up for it in drops. Maybe for a glider, it would just be like an elytra, but rockets cause it to instantly break. The justification would be that the high speed causes the glider to crack or rip undee the pressure.

Having rockets instantly break it would just be cruel... Basically punishing players for trying something that works with the Elytra just to spite them. Just make it so you CAN'T use rockets with it, simple as that. :/

i think an overhaul to iron golems would be nice, overall theyre perfectly fine. aside from being able to kill them from a height they should reach, and getting very easily overwhelmed by hordes of mobs. I mean there's only a couple golems at most in villages, why cant they handle swarms of mobs better? why do arrows even hurt them? Theyre made of IRON. And theyre massive arms can only hit a single mob at a time? honestly if they were more resistant to damage sources like fire, arrows, and potions/magic, they'd be a whole lot better at their jobs. Maybe theyre arms could swipe in front of them, hitting multiple mobs at once, and MAYBE, they could have some kind of counter to the 3 block method, whether its breaking blocks, throwing things, or grabbing them off and beating them.

I think to prevent cheesing them, they could have 2 attacks. Their default attack, which deals quite a bit of damage and launches mobs away. It can also naturally hit 3 blocks up. They would then also have a jumping attack, where they do a short hop and swing their arms into the ground, causing any nearby mobs to fly away in any direction. This allows them to hit players 4 blocks up at the apex of the jump.

I would say, if you want them to be ominous, you could have them stalk you from the skies, waiting till you’re on the brink of death to attack you. And if you wanted more, you could make them invisible at first, only seeing their glowing eyes until you struck them, making them reappear. Just imagine the hoards of zombies you are fighting off, while hearing noises from the sky, stalking you, without you knowing where they are, until you were low enough and they STRIKE. Another thing you could do is a kind of “fear” affect, where either it would be like the wither effect, where it would decay your health, except you wouldn’t get the hearts back until either the day returns or you slay the phantoms. Or you could do my personal favorite, where it covers your screen in a dark smoke, increasing damage done by other enemies, such as zombies or skeletons, and temporarily stunning you.

I think that expanding on the ominous bottle idea would be good. Imagine, that you consume an ominous bottle before going to bed, and then you wake up in a dream/nightmare version of the overworld, where you will have to take on some kind of challenge to get out. Phantoms will attack you during that time, and if you stay in there long enough, then they will rarely spawn (at least for a while) back in the overworld after you get out. This would probably make them a lot more paranoia inducing, but also only if you choose to go into the nightmare dimension thingy.

The ominous bottle really is one of the best recent additions. It allows for any type of dangerous mob addition with the consideration that if you got the bad omen effect, it means you opted in for harder challenges. Mojang have been holding back a lot in terms of difficulty. I can imagine something like bad omen stopping sleep attempts or giving the player a "dream omen" which could honestly be one way of implementing the popular concept of a dream dimension that doesn't bring your items over, and that starts you in a random location in the dream dimension. This might be a pain to implement as you end up with two separate player inventories, but hey, fascinating gameplay opportunities. The dream's duration is based on the level of Bad Omen. A player that falls into a dream does not skip the night. Maybe within the dream, there is a transfer block that carries items from the dream into the overworld. Perhaps that block could be made with the phantom membrane in mind. I can imagine a dream dimension as having a number of pastel-coloured blocks. Maybe blocks in the dimension alter their state depending on some kind of invisible sanity system, turning a dream into a nightmare? Maybe smuggling a ominous bottle into the dream and drinking it turns the dream omen into a nightmare omen. Loads of possibilities there. This creates a layered interaction: Bad Omen forces the player to avoid sleep, because they will be sent to the dream dimension with limited options to get back and in doing so, they burn their bad omen that could be used to activate other events in the world. By being forced to avoid sleep, they must endure the night which sort of increases the difficulty(although this doesn't really hold true for multiplayer). And hey, it gives you something to do with bad omen bottles when you're bored of running trial chambers and raids.

I think it’d be really cool if mountains became more dangerous. They’re currently a super easy and simple way to get tons of iron with almost no danger at all, as long as you bring a bed to skip the nights. It’d be cool if phantoms, as well as potentially iceollogers and the breeze, were able to spawn on mountains during the day, so that you’d have both risk and reward. Though, the phantom would have to be reworked so that it’s no longer undead. Possibly could be called the “sky manta.”

I mean, they could add iron fish, a fictional counterpart to silverfish that have a 1/25 chance to spawn in a huge horde every time you mine an iron ore block and just go ham on you.

I really liked the Revised Phantoms mod. It changed it so phantoms only spawn on full moons after you get iron, have less health, and do more damage

@@Wonky2 the current state of Minecraft modloaders reminds me of that one xkcd comic about competing standards. The issue isn't that people aren't releasing their mods for all 8? mod loaders it is that there are too many incompatible mod loaders, the only way to fight that is to try to stick to the first one unless another one wins out completely. Version chasing is another issue, people aren't going to have developed and continue to develop a mod forever that is impossible There have been versions in the past that for whatever reason Forge took some time to release for the next version so there were more mods and so a magnetism to develop mods for those versions, 1.7 and 1.12 in particular. The issue isn't that all mods aren't available for the lastest version but that multiple mods for similar versions aren't available on the same version. All it would take to fix the version chasing issue is for some force in the moding community to designate a specific version as Long Term Service meaning for the next 2 or 3 years people should try to release mods for that version instead of just the latest.

@@23bcx I wish it was as simple as sticking to the first modloader that came out, but there will always be people who are dissatisfied with its capabilities or the way it works and try to make something better. But that's not the only issue--at the same time, people behind the modloaders are still _people_, fallible beings who will not do everything exactly right, and so, again, there will be people who will be dissatisfied with how things are run and try to do things their own way, hoping it'll improve the situation. This whole mess was pretty much inevitable.

Instead of changing the mob, I'd just add better tools for dealing with them. For example, you mentioned stunning. Why not a stun grenade, or something like a Deku Nut from LoZ. You right-click when it's near and boom you stunned them. The easiest way to implement it would be through potions I think, but I wouldn't be against a new item. A behavior change I'd make is a swarm, circling behavior. They'd circle the player like a shark all at once, then attack one after another. This brings them in melee range and allows you to use the previous stun item.

I think a good way that you could incorporate ominous bottles into Phantom spawns, while adding onto existing features, would be to make it so that focusing on the moon with a spyglass for around five seconds or more would activate a Phantom night effect that makes them start spawning for the duration of that night. You could also have each phase of the moon effect their spawn rate, difficulty and loot. An additional sillier use for the spyglass using this mechanic could be to get a short duration of blindness if you focused it on the sun for the same amount of time and you’d get an advancement questioning why you would stare directly into the sun.

You should check out Green_jab's three part series on how he would fix survival minecraft, you gotta watch to the end of each video because he explores the many parts of the game that are flawed and interesting ideas on how to fix them like improving fishing or enchanting even many for the phantom. You can even comment you own ideas on video because he always replies back and maybe you could join him because he's making a mod of these's idea!

What if the King Phantom is instead called the, Phanta-Ray? Make it so it's an, Alpha animal situation, like how in real life the Alpha in a Pride of Lions will usually have the darkest tufts of hair on their mane and elbows. It shows how much testosterone they have, as well as makes a more striking appearance to enemies and mates a like. The Phanta-Ray can basically be a Phantom/Demonic Manta Ray hybrid in appearance, but really lean into the demon side. A darker blue, the bones are larger and more petruding, give it cephalic horns like a manta-ray but obviously made of bone and look like they are growing out of the Phanta-Ray's head. Maybe also give it little blade like additions to it's wings like what the old Gargoyles 1994 tv show had for their wings, so when it dives down to attack it looks like something one should avoid any and all possible, but still be rewarding if the player correctly times the stun.

I got a new idea, the more the phantom countdown goes on, the more the player begins to have sound hallucinations relating to them, hinting on the fact that you're going too far, kind of warning you, "are you sure you don't want to care of yourself?". I also got a smilar idea with the "there are monsters nearby" message, it doesn't relate to phantoms, but the idea is that the player would be tricked that they will be able to sleep, but they don't open their eyes, instead, they hear echoed mob noises growing more and more until they wake up, for then read the message in the chat. This could slow down the mechanic, I know, but I think it gives a slight taste of the night to the players who want to skip it, so they would not feel like they missed an interesting part of the game

I think the armour should have a energy bar, so that it charges up at day. This would make the player use the weakened armour set during day, rather that just at night, for the bonuses.

I've been thinking of a new mechanic to trigger events in the game, of which I call bells. For phantoms, I introduce the blood moon bell. Place a blood moon bell on a certain block to make it charged, and if you ring it, the next night will be a blood moon (if you ring it at night, it will be the next night.) When rung, the game could also announce it to the server so everyone knows who to blame. They could also happen naturally, but I feel like that would be a little unfair. During a blood moon, surface mobs will be stronger. Mobs spawn with armor and weapons more often and gain a minor speed buff (or another stat) under open skys. It also, of course, spawns phantoms (with the changes mentioned in the video) and maybe some other new mobs if you'd like. If you drink an ominous bottle before a blood moon, it will become an ominous blood moon, making every surface mob stronger than before, but also increasing their chances of dropping good loot. After a blood moon bell is rung, the bell will lose its charge, and you have to find or craft another one or combine 2 uncharged bells in an anvil for 1 charged bell

My idea is to put them as a rare spawn into the End, and give them a stalking mechanic, where they follow you out of reach until you are low on health, or there is more Phantoms around. They would also flee if you wear an elytra.

here are some ideas for the phantom when sleeping with sky access there is a chance that the player will be woken up by phantoms similar to mobs back in beta when you try to attempt sleeping while phantoms are around they dash around the player interrupting there sleep

My personal bandaid fix as a data pack for my vanilla+ server was to let them only spawn on a new moon. Same insomnia required. Its amazing how much an additional hour and a half helps at tempering the annoying factor.

My fix would be to make them only spawn above y=256, remove insomnia completely, and then make them not spawn based on sky light level, but ground light level like every other mob in the game. This would make them something that needs to be saught out and not something that’ll kill you in your open sky and lit up base.

I think one good way to to fix would to be to make it so they swoop down faster but are still slow on the way up. It's seems like a lot of the pain of deal with them is just waiting for them to get close enough to hit.

I think a way to fix them is to increase their size and hitbox (making them easier to hit with arrows) and for an added challenge make so that skeletons and zombies could spawn riding a phantom

In Settings there's a directional audio, but doesn't help at all with phantoms for some reason, their sounds just appear everywhere.

I also think telegraphing when you can spawn phantoms would be nice. Since they can't spawn unless you haven't slept in 3 days, maybe once it's been 3 days, you get a status effect called drowsy or tired or sleepless. something along those lines anyway. it wouldn't really effect gameplay as that'd be annoying, but something somewhat noticeable, like darkening the screen vignette.

most hated mobs minecraft has tend to be ones that go way too far from ones made on alpha and sometimes beta, like comparing a panda to a cow, it will make things seem disconnected and at times even pointless (specially on purpose and its design principals being completely different), so if mojang followed older mobs and concepts more often for newer mobs, people wouldnt be as upset, the breeze and creaking are great examples of that, they both follow after older mobs but with a new twist that still makes them unique. the phantom has potential if it used old design principals. of course there is an exception to what i said, that being the warden, but its due to them gameplay-wise fitting minecraft's core so well, that they stood the test of time.

I actually love everything about them, except not being able to make them a pet with difficulty. Not to ride them, but to have them inside without staying stuck on the ceiling unless you get close enough to be attacked.

Making them appear if you DO NOT SKIP NIGHT is the stupidest thing ever. Also this thing with ominous bottle is also stupid lmao. Just… really, make them spawn at night rarely. Making a nested mechanic that you can only learn from youtube and never from the game itself is a pinnacle of bad game design

For the stun mechanic it would be cool if it didn't just make them freeze, but knocked them on the ground and they'd have to pull themselves along the floor on their wings to chase after you.

Ok big comment here: Like other people have said, it would have been super cool for it to have been a boss. But I think another solution would be to actually make it a real threat and not something that gets completely countered by either iron armor or, I dont know, 9 blocks placed above it. My idea for a better Phantom is if a player hasn't slept for 3 days or spent the entirety of the daytime inside of a cave (like going in one night and coming out the next night without seeing the sun) then the player would get a status effect that would make their vision go blurry every few seconds, and thats the only time you could actually SEE the phantom. it'd be invisible normally but like I said would become visible every few seconds, and would start slowly flying towards the player in groups of three or more. Once they got to the player if they weren't hit backwards, they would steal a piece of the players armor starting from the helmet downwards and fly back up holding it above them for the rest of the night. And the only way to get your armor back would be to shoot the phantom that has it with a bow, so it drops it down. If the night ends and phantoms have your armor it would vanish with the phantoms, and the next time phantoms appear said armor would appear ontop of a couple phantoms in the sky that would circle the player with the same effect as before. But for every night the player doesnt retrieve their armor (minus nights where the phantoms dont appear cause you slept) the armor would have 1/4 of its durability dealt (1/8 for netherite) and a chance for any enchantments on it to be downgraded one level (efficiency 4 > efficiency 3). I feel like this would make phantoms way cooler and more of a threat than the currently are, but there should totally be an item in the deep dark or something that wards off phantoms cause that would get reeeeally annoying late game. its like 11pm so this might have not made sense to anybody actually awake and able to think properly but idk. wanted to write it

I really like the idea of being able to stun them with a hit. For the idea of either phantom armor or a bootleg weaker elytra, I’d combine those ideas and give the phantom a single piece of special armor like the turtle shell that would help with falling in someway. Either granting slow falling like how the turtle shell grants water breathing, negating fall damage all together, or maybe giving you a double jump? It’d be weaker than the elytra but have the benefit of actually providing some protection. For spawning and combat, my idea would be to make phantoms always able to spawn at night in the sky around the player when they are in darkness and exposed to the sky but to make them progressively more aggressive the longer you don’t sleep. That way you could avoid them with standard mob proofing but still maintain their connection to insomnia. This would also make them an optional challenge for those that want to stay up more. For the first few days they would be similar to the first concept you described, only swooping down to attack when a player is weak. They could also spawn riding on normal monsters like zombies, skeletons, and spiders, giving them slow falling and fall damage immunity like chickens. Then after the normal 3 day limit, they begin to actively attack the player on sight instead of just opportunistically. From there I’d make it so that larger phantoms become more likely to spawn the longer you’re been awake, because it’s pretty weird that phantoms are the only mob with a size tag that don’t use it. I’d also probably give them more health when they get larger since it feels kinda weird and unfinished that they currently only do more damage when made bigger with commands

We could go the boring route and simply add a sleeping bag that doesn't let you spawn at it, but I propose a different item: the cocoon. Let's say you make it with 7 phantom membranes and an end rod around an ender pearl. The cocoon is not merely a second bed. Sure, you can sleep in it and it will consume your insomnia, but that's where the similarity ends. It is like an enderchest for entities. When you're in a cocoon, you're no longer in a place. The cocoon itself could be nowhere, somewhere, or multiple places at once, but you are simply in the cocoon. Cocoons can be synced with a particular entity by right clicking, and synced to oneself by right-clicking them on your inventory portrait. Cocoons default to being synced with the player who crafted them (although autocrafted cocoons are synced "globally" by default). Cocoons can remain synced even if the entity they are synced to no longer exists in the world. When you sleep in a cocoon, you charge up the cocoon you enter into with the insomnia it consumed. It then ticks down whenever it is active in the world. If you last slept in a cocoon, you will respawn inside that cocoon, but can awaken at any active cocoon in that network. Respawning from death, however, will destroy the cocoon you awaken at in an explosion similar to a bed explosion. The explosion precedes you and you will have respawn immunity so if it sets you on fire you should be fine, but it will destroy itself and its surroundings. It will also set your spawn location to your bed or the world spawn. Other entities could also be made to enter cocoons by coming into contact with the side of them. Using redstone would then extract the entities from the cocoon that it is used on. Only one entity at a time could be in a given cocoon network. Redstone would also work as a way to forcibly extract players from a cocoon. Keep in mind however that respawning after death will blow up the cocoon and anything nearby. Being in a cocoon network without any active instances in the world would mean you would get the option to awaken at your bed or anchor or the world spawn instead, or you could just sit there in stasis hoping someone places down a cocoon in that network. Cocoons would be nameable and display their name, charge state, and age when deciding which to exit from (thus allowing you to disambiguate) Players could push out non-player entities from cocoons by entering the cocoon and switching places with them.

Had an idea before, where only up to three much bigger Phantoms spawn, they glide through the night Sky, follow the player while staying up high in the air and each gives a random negative effect. They only attack when the player attacks them, but that's also the only way to get rid of the effects. (Could include smth like being unable to sleep)

for a long time i've wanted some kind of phantom themed totem of undying that would teleport you back to your respawn point without having lost any of your items or xp (except for the totem itself), with the implication being that it had just been a bad dream

I am fixing phantoms myself in my own way, here is a part of the current script for my next video for when my mod releases: "Phantoms will have a smoother swoop, don’t turn towards the player when travelling at high enough speeds and deal no knockback to the player. You can prevent their spawning by being near a cat, and when morning comes rather than burning up and dying they dive into the ground and despawn. Rather than spawning after 3 nights of no sleep, they spawn if you have the new insomnia effect which is given to you after 3 nights of no sleep. Killing phantoms has a chance to increase the level, and the higher the level more phantoms spawn. Once you do sleep, you gain a temporary health boost relative to the level of insomnia you had, or you can drink milk to remove the effect for another 3 nights. You can now eat a phantom membrane in order to force-give yourself the insomnia effect if you so desire, especially if you wish to turn on the gamerule that requires you to have insomnia to sleep in the first place."

Another idea is, they could have an extremely low chance of spawning when you start sleeping in your world, but then a meter goes up (like a nightmare meter or something) to increase the chances of the Phantom spawning. Also, the you don’t sleep, the more Phantoms would come and swoop on you.

Yeah, no. Hard agree about it being Mojang's fault. My biggest peeve about the mob votes was always how badly they under-delivered on the winners. Every single time, it was like they put in the bare minimum effort needed to satisfy the condition of having added them to the game, and then gave up on it forever. Rather than just having phantoms get stunned, though, I would make the fight itself more dynamic. For a start, make the stun shorter, and it only happens on a crit, so that it's not just an easy win once you catch them. For another thing, as you pointed out, they stay in the sky too long. So to compensate, have them do more than just a single swoop and back into the air. Say...continuing to circle the player from a close distance to make 2-5 quick swoops, giving the player more of a chance to fight back. A stun would send them into retreat immediately when they bust out of it, so it's a trade off of getting hits in safer, but potentially fewer. Love the idea of a king one, though. Also, since phantoms are supposed to be a mechanic that changes the game for those who _choose_ to brave it, making it so they're not there for players who aren't in a "phantom state". To anyone who isn't currently among their targets, it's like the player is swinging wildly at nothing. They don't see them, don't hear them, and can neither hurt nor be hurt by them.

I feel like the big problems with phantoms are: How annoying they are to fight. With every other regular mob if you learn how it works you can easily make a pattern out of fighting them. Their mechanic being next to impossible to ignore in multiplayer servers without adding extra rules. Might as well turn them off at that point. Then their drop just makes no sense in progression. If you have an elytra, you have mending on it (which has it's own problems but wrong place wrong time to bring that up). While every single other common night time mob continues to have it's uses for drops at every stage. A stun mechanic would fix the first issue and not even require a shield. Having them be focused on hunger would still keep with the theme of them and solve the second issue, needing you to no longer rely on others/the server to despawn them. And while I don't agree with another armor set, a glider would give the membranes a use and add some risk/reward for the early/mid game before full enchanted armor.

My _fix_ on my smp was making their attacks ignore 75% of player armor and other damage cancelling effects but giving them 1 max health so that a single sword strike or single precise arrow kills them

My idea for Phantom rework that would still serve their purpose: •(For multiplayer servers) Make Phantoms neutral, but have them target specific players (the ones that don't sleep) - This would prevent bed users from being punished for other people not sleeping. •Make less Phantoms spawn the first time they show up, but make them spawn more often the more nights you go without sleep •After 5 nights in a row Phantoms can no longer burn in daylight and can appear in the Nether and End; and after 7 nights there can be "fakes" - Phantoms that aren't actually real, like the Illusioner's clones - They can hit you, but you can't hit them; and after 10 nights they can attack faster, deal more damage, and phase through blocks. •Give Phantom Membranes more use than just for Elytras and Slow Fall potions - Maybe you can use it to craft decorative blocks (that could also function as Night 10 Phantom-Proof?) •Phantom Boss (aka Nightmare) - Has the "more scary" sounds you described, and uses the design shown in the 2017 Vote pitch (though obviously larger than regular Phantoms); Can be spawned by drinking an Ominous Potion and trying to sleep after 10 nights without sleep; unlike normal Phantoms, the Nightmare will mostly stay in the air and use a ranged attack similar to Shulkers', but will still swoop down from time to time, but when doing so creates a fake version of itself (you must spot the difference to hit the right one); When defeated you get a Phantom Crown, when worn you cannot be hurt or targeted by any Phantom (except the Nightmare boss). I'm not saying this would make the Phantom less annoying, in fact it could be moreso in some cases, but it would at least be more interesting too.

Honestly to me the most annoying aspect of Phantoms is all the arrows and durability you waste trying to kill them and then not even getting to finish them off because they never come down and end up just dying to the sun. So for me just making them not fly away after attacking you would be enough. They should swoop down and just not stop trying to attack you till you or they die. They can go back to the sky if you manage to leave their line of sight, but only then.

The problem is that they were advertized as spooky monster but all they ended up being are nuisances Compare them to Something like the endermen , warden or even the creeper and that is a sense of inpending doom. When you trigger a warden, look accidentaly at an enderman or hear hiss of a creeper your reaction will probably be "OH SHIT" but when you see a phantom its just "oh...shit its them" they are a bunch of nuisances that are annoying cause there a bunch of cowards that swoop in, barely deal any damage and then fly up. Make them maybe be able to pick up players and drop them down , make hallucinations of them. The player is supposed to be sleep deprived so make some phantoms transparent, they don't take nor give any damage, but they can blend in with the real ones to confuse the player. Also maybe make them actively try to get the player sleep deprived, but that ought to be annoying so maybe not

My way of making the phantom better would be to add a ‘Phantom Roost’ where the phantoms sleep in during the day, and killing a phantom while it’s in the roost will reduce the number of phantoms that spawn the following night. The phantoms will sleep on stalagmites/stalactites much like bats or sleep in 'nests' made of whatever materials they can find. If the player isn't stealthy enough, the phantoms will wake up and swarm the player, attempting to either drive them out of the roost or kill them. When night falls, the phantoms will wake up and fly out of the roost to search for players who haven't slept, returning to the roost before sunrise.

My idea for these guys is to change rather how the player gets rid of phantoms instead of how they spawn. I would make it o they circle at night on day 3 and 4 of no sleep, but wont attack. each day they get lower and lower in the sky, until on day 5 they then get angry enough to attack. They'll do minimal damage at first, only 1 heart in iron armor, but every night after with no sleep their anger increases, they'll screech more often, and an extra half a hear will be added to their damage with a cap at 10 days with 3 and 1/2 hearts, or what i think is a zombie strike in hard. To get rid of them, just hop into a bed, but dont skip the night. Doing this will make the phantoms fly upwards in fear. If the player chooses to skip the night the phantoms will burn, otherwise, the phantoms will keep flying upwards and despawn at build height. This way, continuing long projects can be easily done by just taking a quick power nap. To make this so its still possible for them to get annoyed, napping on days 3-4 will will reset their anger level to 0 and they will go away forever, on days 5-9 will reset their anger to day 3, and on day 10+ will rest their anger to day 5.

You could put the Phantom in the end as a new variant with a slight reskin with slightly transparent wing edges and a slight increase in size and faster speed combine this with an end terrain revamp which could give use some end caves we could make some interesting and interactive scenarios where you have to hide in tight places to avoid their high speed attacks or using the Chorus fruit to block them or using Popped Chorus fruit and rotten Shulker to create a deterrent for them in the end eliminating them as a threat entirely but it only works when you’re holding it in your main hand meaning you have to balance fighting the endermen (if aggrod) and holding the deterrent at the same time

I'm surprise nobody say this. Change the spawn mechanic to be as it is now, they spawn when they are 3 days without sleep, but the counter restart once they spawn so the can't appear two days in a row

My biggest issue with them is that they compound on the problems that beds started. Night in Minecraft is meant to be an open ended challenge that pushes you to build a base to survive, directing you towards Minecraft's strength as a creative sandbox. It pushes you to light up the surrounding area and build a big enough base that nighttime no longer bothers you. Beds allowed a linear, quick way to completely remove the threat of night early on, giving you less push to build a base and engage with the core of Minecraft, but you could always just not sleep. Phantoms go a step farther and pester you with one of the most tedious mob fights even in bases that are otherwise safe if you refuse to sleep. If you are designing a base that is safe for you at night, the design requirements are different depending on whether you plan to right click a bed once an hour or not, pushing you further away from the creative, open ended approach to night of building a base

Only two things are needed to fix phantoms 1) Make them only spawn in the End (now they act as ghasts in the nether, making bridging more tense) 2) Make elytras a craftable item using phantom membranes (they only spawn in the End now, so it's still a late-progression item)

I think one of the main things I'd fix about phantoms is how how they attack. Ok so hear me out here: we make phantoms more aggressive. "But wouldn't that make them worse?" No, the main reason why phantoms are so annoying is because they spend most of their time flying up in the sky where you can't hit them, and they only come down to attack you once every like 7 minutes, you barely have enough time to get 1 hit on them before they fly back up and you have to wait another hour for them to stop idling around amd attack you again. So if we have them spend less time flying around mindlessly, and more time actively on your level attacking you, you have more time to hit them, and they become more of and actual fight. Also maybe adding something that stops phantoms from spawning even if you don't sleep would be nice.

Have you played the datapack Manic? It is based around the sanity mechanic of Minecraft but it now effects far more than Phantoms. Its really fun.

Literally the only thing I like about the Phantom is the design, it feels really original compared to green steves and spoopy skeletons. A manta ray like wraith design really fits with the feeling of undead monster, and I really like how the green eyes shimmer and (not so) glow in the dark. Unfortunately, it has terrible AI and annoying tendencies.

Honestly i would add a dreamcatcher Craft with sticks, feathers, and a emerald just simply hold the item and Phantoms will leave you alone [And if that's too much just have it by each day it loses durability it basically will give you 10 days tops before breaking and you having to craft another] Although if that's the case make it a unstackable item basically making it so you have a way to disable them if you wanted too

I feel like a better "buddy. Go to sleep" mechanic would be if the game started to gaslight you with illusion mobs lol like creeper sounds at random Phantoms themself maybe just circle above and will draw mobs toward you with thier sounds. This way, the mob isn't too annoying but does impose a penalty that can be turned i to an advantage. Other players not sleeping doesn't directly punish you and if you want more enemies then it is a benefit

Make phantom membrane let you craft an item, a food, in combination with beetroot (since it's the most useless foodstuff, it's literally pointless.) that gives you an effect like, night vision and haste I maybe? Balance the duration to be used mid game to late game before beacons and netherite pickaxes. That's my idea.

could you maybe improve striders? i know they were supposed to just be lava boats but its a cool concept that is like never used, maybe you could use leads to tie them to each other and make like a train of them, maybe instead of riding one you could put a chest on one so now i cant be ridden but can be used as like a nether caravan to transport resources. just some ideas great vids
