I think John Lennon’s first solo album will always be in my top five. Neil Young is a big favorite of mine. His performance in that film was stunning. Both Lennon and Waters were the most acerbic and moody members of their respective bands, so it's no wonder they didn't get along. Either way, they were both geniuses, and you can see some influence of Lennon on Roger's lyrics.

That is a good parallel. Paul and David are the friendly ones, so it makes sense they became friends, but John and Roger were the jerks (I love them both, but they can sometimes be jerks) so it is funny that they clashed. I think if they powered through some initial awkward encounters, then they would have gotten along eventually. They were all musical geniuses.

Coz, in part, their creativity and economic success depended on exploring the world, hanging out with people, getting to know them and so on. They did not allow themselves to be close off with the world.

Billy Preston and Clapton were the only times they collaborated with an outside musician (not counting orchestras) Pink Floyd were not friends with the Beatles and were given the Beatle freeze out. None of the band would dare bring a non-musician personal friend to the studio. They didn't even like when Brian Epstein would pop in. That's why the other three had such a hard time with Yoko's presence during the white album.

One sad takeaway from all this is the realization that the Beatles were friends and truly loved / cared for each other ( even though they could have some wicked fights ), and Pink Floyd weren’t. As a Pink Floyd fan that’s kind of difficult to hear, but the fact is that right now you have two old men who don’t seem to give a damn about each other, and another doing his own thing. I believe Gilmour has said that he didn’t have any friends in the band - more of a working relationship.

I'm a HUGE Floyd fan and a (practicing) musician/guitarist. Dave is probably my favorite guitarist of all time and a significant influence on me as a musician. But I've seen a lot (many, many) of his interviews and I don't think he and I would be friends if I were a peer in his circle. I think he can be (frequently) cold and impersonal. I suspect Rick or Nick may say they were friends; it's Dave who limits things. That...and as much as I love Dave as a guitarist, and a part of Floyd, the answer to "by the way, which one's Pink?", is undoubtedly Roger Waters. Not the same vibe without Roger...not even close.

Fook Waters and his self entitled persona. Dave still has a good repertoire with Nick Mason, so it's all good with those two. @@entropy_sci I did not get that impression of Gilmour at all, he got along very well with Rick, especially later and Nick too. He also got along very well with Roger UNTIL after Dark Side....then the MASSIVE egos kicked in, especially Roger who now fancied himself far more important than just merely a rock star. At this age, with not too many years left, I don't blame Gilmour one single bit in surrounding himself with those people he wants to be around and doing the type of music he wants to. I also don't blame him for not wanting to be around Roger, he is a very difficult person, by most accounts, and seems angry and disaffected most of the time. Watch the films behind the scenes of his last 2 tours, Gilmour is very happy, very outgoing, and surrounded by many friends and family where as Roger seems to take himself far more seriously.

Pink Floyd were actually mentioned in the 1968 Hunter Davis biography of The Beatles. It's mentioned that they stopped into the studio. This was probably not a very formal introduction and The Beatles probably just thought they were just another group of the many they probably met. This may have been a huge deal for Pink Floyd but not one for the fab four.

I ran into Peter Jenner at a Billy Bragg concert (I think around 1990-1991), I had no idea who I was talking to at first, he was talking a lot about Syd and Floyd’s early days. We talked for quite awhile, I was a little taken aback when he told me who he was…he told me about bits and pieces of the recording of Piper and how the Beatles were right next door at Abbey Road and that they were very interested in Syd and how creative he was, and peaked in from time to time while the Floyd were recording.

The truly sad thing to me is that at the time just a couple years before Lennon’ murder, he seemed to be really changing and becoming less abrasive and more of a family man and sweet man. Right after The Beatles finished in Studio 2, The Zombies recorded much of their classic album Odessey and Oracle in the same studio using the same sound engineer Geoff Emerick and some of The Beatles' instruments including Lennon's mellotron and an electric harpsichord. I wouldn't have thought they would have had much in common. The Beatles were slumming around rough clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg when they were teenagers, they're basically scallies made good. Whereas Pink Floyd always came across as very middle-class, brought up in big houses with gardeners and attending independent schools.

It's only natural to have competitive attitudes towards each other. With the Beatles' enormous success, and meeting them in studio while creating another hit album with fresh ideas. Then "the pink floyd" walks in. Their songs are not about "love". Their first hit single Arnold Layne is about a clothesline thief. On the evening of 21 March 1967 They were brought together in Abbey Road and exchanged hellos. And paul and john went to see them at the Music & Art event, listening to "Interstellar Overdrive". So they were all very aware of each other and their talents. Lennon was a very down to earth guy, and Waters is a show off sort. There is a place for all, and I like ALL of their albums!!!

I don’t if it was so much competitive attitude, I’ve worked in studios at the top level for many years and cats don’t want others cats coming into your session when not invited. Geoff Emerick talked about this meeting in his book It was all Norman Smith. He just brought them in. Those dudes were trying to work. Often times people don’t want others hearing unfinished work for many reasons. Plus Floyd were unknowns. Certainly they were like who the F are these people in our sessions. They were largely closed session. Emericks book is a great read.

The "Get Back" footage we finally get to see, was only 24 months after the '67 meeting, we can see the atmosphere where all beatles plus outsiders are cramping their style. They were probabaly in no mood to entertain... Hey later on Paul (McCartney) became really good friends with *David Gilmour* ..Paul McCartney and David Gilmour, however, must have struck up a friendship. They saw a *Led Zeppelin* concert together They would not just stay in touch. Macca invited Gilmour to particulate in his projects several times. They played on each others records. David played with Paul at the "Cavern" club. Recorded lead guitar on Paul's hit ' _No More Lonely Nights"_

I met Jason Bonham back in 1990? on his first US tour, bumped into his entire band in an outdoor men's room (Baity's W-S, NC). he was very nice, shook my hand. And also met Joe Strummer & Paul Simenon(another accident) outside of Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel-Hill, NC (UNC-CH campus). Their bus pulled up in front and they walked in(no security) for a soundcheck, very humble guys, great show that night.

I love Pink Floyd, but it just shows you the quality of the songwriting and musicianship of the Beatles and those around them... that Sgt. Pepper was being worked on at the same time as Piper. Sgt. Pepper is clearly superior in every way.

I didn't mean to make any comparisons, but I guess I did. Having said that... I usually prefer 60s/70s bands later output. For the Beatles, my fav albums are the White album and Abbey Road. I had met both bands in the late 60's. The Beatles in Jermyn St. London on there way to impresario Bernard Delfont's office. I met Pink Floyd whilst traveling on the train after a gig at Newcastle City Hall. I talked a little to them as we all were sharing the same carriage to King's X. Roger Walters was not a problem to approach, all of them were tired--they were also on the cusp of --fame and fortune! Still listen to them to this very day!

I love Pink Floyd, but they were nobodies in '67 and it's not like the most popular band on the planet can share tea with every up and coming band. Waters isn't exactly a amiable person; I do respect his self-awareness in admitting he has some responsibility for the disappointing encounter. The Beatles were in 'the zone' creating a masterpiece. Everything outside of that was white noise. But the idea of Floyd's debut and the Sgt. Pepper being recorded under the same roof at the same time is jaw dropping to think about. Truly an apex as far as modern music goes.

The problem here was that Norman Smith had stopped working with them so he was no longer welcome. It was an ill-advised decision on Smith's part to show up as it created a climate of tension as Waters says at the end.

Doesnt sound like a situation that would lend itself to a great social interaction. Beatles were in the middle of a session and Pink Floyd didn’t even have an album under their belt yet. “Nice to meet you, thanks for stopping by” It’s the only time John and Roger met. Doesn’t sound so much that they didn’t get along than sparks didn’t fly. Also, Syd wrote all of Pink Floyd’s stuff back then so it’s not even like it was a meeting of the two genius songwriters at that time. If John was even the slightest bit aware of Pink Floyd through the studio and Norman Smith connection , he would probably view Syd as the bandleader.

It was the fault of Norman Smith for bursting in with Pink Floyd in tow when the Beatles were not expecting the visit and were preoccupied with recording Rita. Plus they (Beatles) were not very comfortable with people they didnt know showing up at their recording sessions. Paul thought Floyd was a very interesting band, he was very aware of them and thought they would be ones to take 'progressive music" to new levels. Whereas the Beatles were done with the big production except for Walrus they really were down another alley with their next real album, White Album. Floyd, King Crimson, Yes and a few others would do very well with those types of albums in the future.The Beatles as a band never really went down further down the road with that unless you want to count John's avant garde stuff with yoko and Revolution 9 which was really just self indulgent of John. He should have kept it on his solo stuff with Yoko.

Even then he was constantly encouraging them to be more productive and tried to get good music out of them. The same can't be said for Waters who became so egoitiscal to the point of becoming extremely delusional. Starting from around the time of Animals, not only did he think he was Pink Floyd he completely overestimated his own musical abilities and almost completely stopped taking musical inouts from the rest of the band during the Wall sessions - and the result was obvious - as Gilmour said "lacked soul". The two outstanding songs that drove the Wall's success - Anothet Brick and Comfortably Numb were ironically two of the most "non-Waters song" on the album. Producer Bob Ezrin wss mainky responsible for those and had to end up doing them with the help of Gilmour behind Roger's back. On the other hand with the Beatles be it Magical Mystery Tour Or Abbey Road you can still see a lot of the very best of Lennon on those and it's obvious that Mccartney wanted to still have Lennon making stuff and contributing - the problem was that Lennon him was getting lazy and couldnt be bothered so Mccartney "domineerig" was in a positive way, Waters wasnt. Also as far as concepts are concerned there is no comparison. Waters is way better than Mccartney here.

I used to listen to Animals on the headphones for about 2 years when I was 15. I loved it back then, but as I grew older I realised it was just depressing sound effects laden ego music from Roger Waters (I know Dave Gilmour co-wrote Dogs). The only album of the Waters era Floyd I still listen to is Wish You Were Here. Roger Waters is an egomaniac. I don't dispute his brilliance, but I'm so glad I grew out of his Pink Floyd. Waters Floyd is very common for young people who like to have a smoke and listen to the album's on headphones. I forgot to put Piper At The Gates of Dawn in there. Without which there would be no Animals album.

@@kevanbrown7620 You just overplayed Animals. I've done it with lots of album before. Anyway, out of all those albums, the Velvet Underground & Nico is the only one that I would say is comparable to Animals. But unlike Animals, even that one has bad songs (like Run Run Run.) Also, I can't stand the Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I'm actually not a fan of the initial wave of psychedelia in the 60's, but Piper is everything I don't like about that era crammed into one album. Like most pop albums from 1967, it's kids music. That alone isn't bad, but Syd Barrett's overtly English vocals and songwriting wears on me really quickly. Interstellar Overdrive is the only track on there that doesn't make me feel tired. I'm just not a Syd Barrett fan. And Arnold Layne, that song I hate so much I can't believe it. I know it's illegal to like Pink Floyd and not like Syd Barrett. Funny considering that they're complete opposites in every way, and there's no reason liking one should indicate liking the other.
