What people don’t recognize is that ones you become a collector your automatically a investor, I’ve sold statue that are over $1,000 that I just got tired of and guess what I bought them for $600. Pretty much i invested without even knowing lol.

Pokémon not being a typical investment avenue is beneficial to the few that see the opportunity. When/ if Pokémon investing becomes mainstream, that’s when the rest will realize their mistake.

I'm loving the content! Very practical and logical. I like to see my collection as an investment. My wife has often not been in favor of me collecting shiny cardboard (waste of money). I picked up a Moonbreon PSA 10 at $720 and seeing how it has risen to about $1100-$1200 she might recognize that it could be so much more than shiny cardboard.
@phillips.collectibles7 ай бұрын

Good choice! It’s an iconic card.
@grydon64226 ай бұрын
@adamdonnelly2932 But that’s exactly the problem. You bought it, it has increased in value, but now you won’t sell it. If you did make consistent money from them, that’s when you demand respect for them from your wife that it might be more than shiny cardboard. But as long as you just speak of the supposed value but never sell it,specially on a card like Moonbreon which will lose lot of its value once the hype settles down, it truly is nothing more than a very expensive piece of cardboard. I struggle with that too a bit; I used ~5500 to buy the Munch Scream promo set, and justified that to my girlfriend that these have real potential for growth! And mimikyu alone is now worth around 4k (doubled), eevee is around 1k (doubled), Psyduck is 1.2-1.5k (2-3x), and Rowlet and Pikachu are currently valued about the same as back then (Pikachu did dip over 50% after I bought it but gladly it came back up). And last summer when the Japanese boom happened, Mimikyu was going for 8k and from this 5 card set alone I was on *profit* for around 10k. Sadly they came back down after that boom but still cool to sew So on paper I’m winning. But the problem is that I love the promo set so much, I don’t know if Im ever able to sell them. So essentially I have used over 5k on cardboard, justified it to myself and my girlfriend that iTs An InVeStMeNt, but never liquidating them meaning I just wasted 5k on cardboard instead of putting that money to actual tangible investments like Stocks or even towards a property. Maybe my mind changes and if they sre ever worth even more than last summer, and I could get seripus money off of them, I might liquidate them and use the money on something more ”meaningful” but right now it is a serious question whether it was good use of money or not
@grydon64226 ай бұрын
@adamdonnelly2932 But that’s the problem. You have bought a card that has increased in value, but now you are not selling it. If you were to make consistent money from pokemon card investing, then it would command respect and make your wife think it might be something more, but when you use lot of money on a card (especially on a card like Moonbreon which will definitely lose a lot of its value once the hype goes down, and never selling it), then it truly is just collecting shiny cardboard and nothing more, in other’s eyes. The point of investing is to make gains and profit; that includes actually profiting and not just keeping the value increase locked in things that you don’t even want to liquidate. I’m struggling with that a bit myself. I bought the Munch Promo set for ~5.5k a few years ago, and justified to my gf that they are investments, they have a real chance to increase in value!! And since then, the Mimikyu and Eevee have doubled, Psyduck has almost tripled, and Rowlet and Pikachu have stayed the same (apart from Pika losing over 50% of its value at one point, gladly it came back up). And during last summer’s japanese boom, the Mimikyu alone was around 8k, and from that 5 card set alone I was on *profit* for around 10k. Incredible to see, though unfortunately they came back down once the boom was over. So on paper, I’m winning, I made a great investment right!? The problem is, I love that promo set to death. They are incredible, has amazing story, are actual art and each card connects to the next making it a true set. I don’t know if I can ever part with the set. So what was an ”iNvEsTmEnT” of 5.5k, has a risk of becoming a liability of 5.5k, a huge money that could have been put to a property, stocks, starting a business… I don’t regret having the set, at all. But if we talk about investing and being an ”investor”, I can still be self aware enough to be real with myself and aknowledge that if I was a smart investor, I might have invested the money on something more conventional that I don’t get emotionally attached to, like I do with cards that I like, and actually made the gains on that money.

I love the way you’re thinking about this and couldn’t agree more 🙏 One of my overarching theories for why investing in Pokémon makes sense is this idea that there’s a cultural shift pushing all forms of collectibles into increasingly legitimate “alternative investments”. It’s just a hunch, but the more this comes true the more it builds my conviction.

Thanks for tuning in. And yeah absolutely a paradigm shift has certainly happened with what people view as investments.

I am always a bit shy and uncomfortable when it comes to sharing that I collect and invest in Pokemon cards with people I know. I think I should just show them this video if they start commenting. But seriously, there is no difference in cashing in on Bitcoin or Pokemon cards, I totally agree and I love this way of thinking! And you can also add that although the money is the same, some cards hold an extra value or a story. I doubt Bitcoin has any added value in investing like a collectible such as Pokemon cards.
