Personally, I'd make Sound be resisted by Psychic because one, meditation requires you to completely ignore and block any sounds that are coming towards you, and two, Psychic, while certainly not a bad type, isn't exactly a top tier pick like Water or Steel are. Still a good video, though!
@proclarushtaonasat2 жыл бұрын
so true! In the scifi-show stargate, they even use a sound generator, to block the psychic powers of evil space priests by giving them migraines due to the exact same logic. Edit: I just reread the original comment, and realized, I got it completely backwards. Sound should be effective against psychic, but maybe moves like calm mind and meditation could lessen the effect of sound?

I don't think sound should be resisted by psychic, because all of Pschic's weaknesses are stuff people are scared of- Bugs, the dark, and ghosts. A lot of people are scared of loud sounds, and sudden loud sounds are also the first thing people's brains drift to because that sound could give a warning that determines your life or death. While some Psychic types do meditate, it is tough to meditate when there are loud noises around. (I would know, I have experience.) and while with practice you can overcome it, it's still tough to drown out everything IMO.
@Marblesoda8212 жыл бұрын
Actually the Sound>Psychic is reasonable, you can always try to meditate and reach a mental state to try and ignore sounds but things like Screech or Metal Sound (Both moves being loud ear-piercing screeches, let's not even get into Hyper Voice) are more than enough to knock someone out of the metal state and even make them unable to focus and think

Wailmer and Wailord could make good sound types too, considering how Blue Whales can make 180 Decibal Calls underwater (which is as loud as a Jet Plane), and certain toothed Whales also use sound bursts to stun fish in the real world. A Water/Sound typing for Wailmer/Wailord would also make them even weaker to grass types, thus showing how a grass-type like Dhelmise can actively hunt Wailord.

my issues with it are: 1) I feel like 18 types is a perfectly even number to have. Unless they wanna give us 2 types again like in gen 2, bringing us to 20 types 2) I know people say Bug type is terrible as well, but i feel like Ice type is the only one that needs heavy rebalancing (and GF has taken a small step towards that with changing freeze to frostbite in PLA), so they could just do that. 3) All the good Special Normal Type movies would be gone; there'd only be Swift, Tri-Attack and Weather Ball (which are all gimmicky) and that messes with Pokemon that have the -ate ability that turns Normal moves into different type moves. ex. Sylveon and Gardevoir could no longer use Pixilate boosted Hyper Voice which would mess them up 4) The fact that they already have Sound Based moves that aren't Normal typed This last part isnt an issue, but it'd be funny if sound type was a thing cause there's already the Soundproof ability, so those mons would probably gain viability being immune to Sound Types. Like the Levitate ability
@noodles246012 жыл бұрын
Point 3 you have here is definitely my biggest concern with a hypothetical sound type. It just absolutely guts normal move availability unless they take some drastic steps to avoid that. While I agree with most of what you said, I have rebuttals of my own. First, some of your examples of Pokemon that should be sound type already have fitting types, such as bronzong, whose psychic type comes from it's magic powers and Hakamo-o, whose sound come from it's war dances. Second, you said towards the argument that sound type is just normal type, that for now it is. However of the thirty-one sound based moves, only eighteen are normal type. I brought this up for two reasons: to point out how the argument makes no sense at all, and because several of these moves probably will never change type, specifically bug buzz, eerie spell, grass whistle and metal sound. Third, as already brought up, there are already numerous sound based moves, all with the same ability to ignore substitute. it's already a gimmick added onto moves to make them situationally better with the same theming. If they added a sound type, they'd have to change several things that I doubt they will. Not saying they won't, I just don't see it happening any time soon. Edit: I noticed said you would cover the comment that @BlazeDJ made. I hope you do the same with this one and try to argue against it, as this was fun to type out.

For the choices of Sound-type Pokemon, you should exclude those that simply make references to sound techniques and consider if the type itself fits the theming of the Pokemon. Bronzong is a bell, but its a bell with mystical powers that calls for rain. Hence more psychic than Sound. Kommo-o uses his clanging scale dances and preview of the battle to come. He’s a… whats the word… ritualistic fighter? Exploud is good as a Sound type, but his large body and muscles should also make him a Normal type, so Normal/Sound is a more fitting type for him. Noivern is a great Sound/Dragon, but Swoobat is better known for abusing Stored Power, a Psychic move and using echolocation is a poor reason to make it sound-type, otherwise the blind zubat would be one too. A lesser known option for Sound-type could be the Toucannon line as they can change their vocals to over a hundred different cries (at least as a Trumbeak). It would also set it apart from the myriad Normal/Flying types. Meowstic line could debatably be Sound-type as their psychic powers are inside their ears and are portrayed as psychic sound waves. Though the power itself is not referred to as sound-based and the evolutions say the power is in the patterns beneath their ears, so… Theres others, but other commenters mentioned those already.

I do like the idea of a new type trying to bring balance to the game. What bothers me is that sound based moves is already a thing. There is at the time of this comment 27 sound-based moves, almost the same amount as fairy type moves. It already have its own "gimmick" (bypassing substitutes), item and abilities (Soundproof,Liquid Voice,Punk Rock,Throat Spray). Which is quite unique for the franchise. Making it a new type is not that farfetched but I don't want it. Sound-based moves are not bound by any type, that's why I think they're interesting. By not putting them in a fixed type, it allows more flexibility I think, and I would like more of those sub categories.

I don't think adding the Sound type has to confine any Sound-based moves to that type, since there are a lot of moves in Pokemon that could belong to a variety of different types (for example, the existence of the Fighting type doesn't require any punching move to be Fighting type). @pubertdefrog2 жыл бұрын
Well, there is one new type possibility that gets overlooked way too much, and that is the Temporal/Time type. Just as sound is an integral part of our everyday being, so is time and it's properties. There are so many options for temporal type pokemon too, you could have seasonal guardians that share the Temporal type along with Ice, Fairy/Grass, Grass/Fire, & Ghost. It's a bit of a wacky type option, but I think it makes sense to add it either alongside sound or somewhere down the line after sound

@incrediblymai83622 жыл бұрын
Really interesting argument, you've got me just about convinced. The only hangup is how receptive people would be to a new type right now... One thing with the pokemon that could be changed to sound type- did you consider the Oricorios? Obviously it'd be a hard workaround considering each one has a different typing to go with its style (Baile being fire and flying and Sensu being ghost and flying, etc.) but they are all based on different dance styles- I would like to hear your thoughts on this even if nothing else!
@mitchpitch2 жыл бұрын
Yeah im 100% with you on the first point, i think its unlikely just because of general public consensus despite how 'perfect' it would fit. People just think the name is dumb and dont want a new type which is understandable. And the oriocorios for sure, they dont really fly so they could replace the flying type of them

I was pretty strongly against sound type until watching this, but you've convinced me to at least consider it (and although I don't think it's at all likely, I hope to be proven wrong). I think the biggest thing holding it back in the community isn't necessarily that it's boring, but just that it sounds uncreative, similarly to "light", "nuclear", "wind", etc. But the way Uranium handled "nuclear" justified its inclusion, and the strengths/weaknesses of sound you described do the same.
@DamonDraven2 жыл бұрын
To be honest I think that pokémon types should be as natural and uncreative as possible. Most names are very basic, more in line with "light" (we have dark) and "wind" (we already have fire, water, and ground) rather than "nuclear" which is much more artificial so to speak. That's why fairy and dragon seem like oddballs to me, their names sound way too specific.

I would argue for Jynx being sound type since it speaks in a human-like voice and can learn sing and perish song. But my question is, what criteria is there for a Pokémon to be sound type and not just a Pokémon that knows sound moves? Does it have to be made of sound in some way, and how would that be possible? The sound type seems like a good idea, but I really don’t want them to remove Seismitoad’s ground type, it having the sound type makes sense, and this may just be from my obsession with Gen 5, but one of the best things about Seismitoad is it only having one weakness (or two if we count sound). Adding sound will bring the electric weakness back, keep the 4x grass weakness, and add a weakness to bug. I think it would be better as a split evolution or regional form. Returning to my Gen 5 obsession, if they ever remake BW, Clay’s gym could be screwed up if Palpitoad’s no longer a ground type. This is like my third time retyping it trying to have my reasons make sense

My main problem with sound as a type is how it affects sound moved now seeing as they're already an attack type with unique properties, items, and ability interactions. How can you justify a sound type when sound moves that aren't normal like bug buzz, disarming voice, snarl, and overload exist?
@kexly14472 жыл бұрын

@mitchpitch2 жыл бұрын
They could be sound type moves learned by those typed pokemon like bug buzz is a sound type move learned by bug types. And maybe they get those typed pokemon apply stab to the move if they are that type. So disarming voice could get stab if used by a fairy type pokemon etc but its still a sound type move. That could be a potential option.

I really like the idea of rebalancing the type matchups, and I like the thematic value of sound for some of the more boring normal pokemon (especially because normal is basically a non-type to me, which feels like a huge waste. I wish it resisted more things or something). That said, every current pokemon type is very easily arguable to be elemental. With the possible exception of fairy, ghost and psychic, but those are also very tangible states of being. Sound feels a little generic and unintuitive to me, and other people have already mentioned the issue with sound-based non-normal moves and stuff. It's hard, because there's an obvious emphasis on sound in the games that does feel underutilized, and a lot of those pokemon really need a buff, but it's a bit of a tough sell in terms of a whole new type
@mitchpitch2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a good point. I do still think despite it not being elemental or tangible really that its deserving of a type. But based on some comments there's no denying that people just from the name 'sound type' would think its lame or confusing.

Entomology nerd here, i have to leave a second comments cuz bugs may not have ears but all singing bugs (hopppers, cicadas, etc.) have eardrum-like structures on their bodies that let them hear sound, would be really useless for a singing bug to be deaf, since the whole point of singing is to attract mates.

I can't believe a 15 minute video doesn't go over the main reason we don't have Sound Type: Sound is already in the game. In Pokemon, we have a mechanic called a usage method which interacts with Abilities and Items. We have punching moves boosted by the Iron Fist ability, dance moves copied by the Dancer ability and bomb moves negated by the Bulletproof ability. The sound usage method not only interacts with Soundproof, it's type-changed by Liquid Voice, disabled by Throat Chop and boosted by the Throat Spray to name a few. That's not only more interactivity than any other usage method, but the wider implications of adding another type would need to be thought about, such as Normal Pokemon who didn't get Sound-Type no longer gaining STAB from Hyper Voice, Snore or Boomburst, which weakens the Normal-Type's kit overall. Disarming Voice is a Fairy-Type sound move that many Pokemon learn. If Disarming Voice is Sound-Type instead of Fairy, only a small handful benefit; exactly 4 of them if we're going by your proposed Pokemon changes. On top of that, most sound-based moves are status moves, which would make the Sound-Type match-up almost useless from an offensive perspective. Tangent aside though, my main point is that usage methods have far more wide-reaching utility than Types, especially when those mechanics overlap, therefore sound should stay a usage method. We don't need something we already have.

@Proceleon2 жыл бұрын
@@mitchpitch Fair. I still can't fathom how a video like this only covers the two most surface-level reasons for disliking the type; even I'll agree those are the worst rebuttals possible. Actually, let me add some things to my original comment: All of the current types can exist relatively independently of any other. Electric charges occur naturally, heat, fire and lava are natural, albeit transformative forces, natural muscle strength and intelligence explains the Fighting and Psychic types and more abstract Types like Dark and Fairy can be argued to be inherent evil or goodness, i.e. there is no prerequisite to create either. Sound does not have this property. Sound cannot exist by itself, it literally requires one of the other forces to exist at all. Metal, fire, water, all of them produce sound and the way it's communicated is in the sound move having X Type. Disarming Voice is a charming cry? Fairy-type sound move. Parting Shot and Snarl are aggressive? Dark-type sound move. Bug Buzz? Self-explanatory. The Normal-Type moves also simply wouldn't qualify. Fighting moves are based on advanced fighting techniques, hence Jump Kick and Low Kick being Fighting-Type while Mega Kick isn't; because Mega Kick is just a strong kick, no skill required. By the same token, it doesn't take any skill to snore or shout really loudly, hence those moves default to Normal. At most, only 3 or 4 Normal moves are extremely specialised: Boomburst, Hyper Voice, Relic Song and Supersonic and at that point the Sound-Type simply isn't worth it. Again, the "everyone can speak" argument is dumb, but the reasons why sound is reduced to a mere usage method is an important thing to consider.
@TheTeraFurret2 жыл бұрын
I agree with all your points but some tells me even if we got the sound type, we are not getting a new Eevee evolution because each Eevee evolution has one stat that is higher than all the others, but since each stat has been used for the evolutions, there’s no other Stat that can be higher than the other ones without overlapping with another Eevee evolution.
