In the late 1950’s I good friend of mine visited the island to acquire some civil was surplus sharps ammunition, he told me that the buildings were made of concrete that used cannon and rifle barrels as rebar,(the barrels were cheaper than rebar) out front he saw 2 hotchkiss mountain guns, one complete, and one with a damaged breech, both listed for 25 dollars, after getting inside he was amazed by the literal mountains of moldy leather civil war surplus ammo belts and cases, as well as piles of Spanish American war arms. Most of the gun parts and accessories were sold to a man named Val Forgett , founder of the company Navy Arms , a business that still sells those parts from bannerman island.

Taking a tour of this Island was at the top of my bucket list. Despite the limits on how close you are allowed to get to the main building, I really enjoyed the tour. There is a smaller building that I had no idea was on the island that cannot be seen from the water. It was used as a residence at some point, and people are allowed inside it.

@ITSHISTORY We visited Bannerman Castle last year in Sept. The tour was great and we arrived by boat with about 100 people. The tour guide mentioned that story about the boat accident. You are in the island for over an hour on a guided tour and then allowed to go around and photograph until the next pick-up boat arrives. The heat of the sun is INTENSE, and you need to bring spray or lotion to protect the skin and wear a hat, any hat! People are not allowed to be near the castle for safety reasons but when we walked up the mountain to the old home you get great views. Fun fact, you can see bald eagles' nests on the trees by the river on the way to the island, and one bald eagle in particular is so used to the boat on the way back he perched on the front of the boat. The captain warned people not to be near it since it's a huge wild animal. He flew away when the boat got near the bay, like the eagle was the new boat guide.

Actually it is a spoon, usually wooden, but also other materials are used like plastic and metal. It is used for stirring. In Belgian it is a ladle and more used for serving up soup and gravy. It is used in the same sense in the Netherlands, but not very often. 'Pol' means the rounding of a hand held as a cup, which has transferred to the utensil.

The Dutch word "pollepel" is more specific than the English word "ladle". It refers specifically to the flat, wooden spoon used only for stirring the soup or sauce. So not the more generic assembly of various cooking spoons that "ladle" refers to, including also metal ones and the bowl shaped examples that can also be used to actually serve/scoop the soup/sauce. So even though "pollepel" formally translates to "ladle", their meanings are not fully interchangeable.

3:50 story is okay, but you weren't very careful on the pictures/image. You post an image of Brooklyn Bridge about 40years premature of its existence as the drafts for foundations were sketched in 1867 and bridge began construction in 1870 and completed in 1883-- so your timing is really way off. The "castle" was built in 1901 which is about 20 years before Prohibition which was 1920-1922. You just mish everything together without much careful accuracy. Maybe the agreement was to keep island alcohol free, but has almost nothing to do with Prohibition. Canadian Prohibition 1918=1920. So not exactly accurate.

Hi, I'm Dutch and a "pollepel" is a spoon. A big spoon that is either wooden to stir or a deep spoon to scoop the soup into a bowl or dish. I think people use the term for multiple spoon types. It's a funny name for an island. I think that they named it like that because it looks like an upside down deep spoon, a "pollepel". It's unbelievable but there is a fancy dance in Holland called the "Stuyvesant Ball" named after Peter Stuyvesant who sold New Amsterdam, now called 'New York' (You might have heard of it...) for the amazing price of 1 Dutch gildern. Why they celebrate it is beyond me, imagine if the Dutch had a bigger stake in the USA. Maybe we Dutch people could have immigrated or work easier in the US like we could in the colonies. I would have loved to go to the States and work there. Not that it's impossible now but it is not easy either. Anyway, (wooden) spoon island. I'd love to visit it, these kind of places are awesome. Nice video and great history lessons...

Unless the OG builder (of whatever) takes the time and effort to build a connection with their kids. Specially teaching them about why one does or builds what they build. Then the children are vested in the project. And no, just telling them one time does not count. It’s a constant teaching them about you. Most parent today fail to do that because 1. They assume schools will teach them 2. They are too busy in their personal lives (that one is big because the children will specially hate the project that stole their father) 3. Parents are stuck with their heads in the sand expecting this level of respect from their children and complete obedience without a relationship based on caring for each other. 4. Parents over protect their children and raise wussies 5. The devil.

My comment seems to have disappeared. If links are not allowed, I apologize. There is a YA Fantasy series that takes place on Bannerman Island. Bannerman himself is mentioned and has a descendant at the magic school that is on the island. Bannerman's mansion appears in Book Three as a place where the ghosts of sailors who drowned in the Hudson meet on Halloween. Many Hudson Highland myths are mentioned or appear onstage. The series is called The Books of Unexpected Enlightenment. The first volume is called The Unexpected Enlightenment of Rachel Griffin.

This video caught my eye because I recognized the castle from being in a movie called "For the Love or Money" Starring Michael J Fox in 1993 it is s about Doug, a concierge at a luxury Manhattan hotel, saves all his tips toward his plan for a hotel. A potential investor seduces the girl Doug loves with false promises of leaving his wife. The hotel was supposed to be built at this location. It is a really good movie.

Suggestion; build a grand Four Lane Bridge linking the island to the mainland. A Pedestrian bridge along one side. A bicycling bridge along the other side. Close bridge off three times each year for drag-racing. Errect appartments along the bridge's upper sides, like England once did during the 1300s. Rich spectators can rent various apartments as spectators. Workers on the island may buy or lease one of these apartments affordably as a discount for their continued zeal in doing a job well doe and loyalty to the island's upkeep. " Teamwork makes the Dream work. "
