Very nice review. The original G-Shock Came out 1983, so early 1980s. I wear a DW-5600-E for work. Had it for over 20 years. Had to replace the strap and bezel once. Only 1 battery change. At $42, it’s also completely replaceable.

Square G-Shocks are the best! I have a second hand GLX-5600 that was given to me as a gift by my mom 4 or 5 years ago. Mine is the dark gray with florale pattern. I was not into watches because I always felt them heavy and uncomfortable. I started wearing the G-Lide and it felt so natural and lightweight. Long story short I fell in love with it. I did a lot of watch-unfriendly activities with it on my wrist. I worked on my supermoto, on my car, I rode mtb and shaken and sweated the hell on it. It is still working flawlessly and shows no minimal sign of what I threw on it. It's beautiful!

I've owned a DW5600 for around 6 months now, and it is the most versatile and lightest watch I own. Because of how light it is, it's also comfortable to wear all day doing all sorts of activities including sleeping.

actually G-Shocks didn't sell all that well when they first came out and the brand was struggling until 1984 when a US TV commercial where an ice hockey player shoots a G-SHOCK instead of a puck and the wristwatch remains whole sparked the brand’s worldwide (but initially the US) popularity. the watch in the commercial was a DW-5200 and that watch is dubbed "HERO" because it saved the brand after it started selling like crazy after that commercial. Then came the DW-5600C which is dubbed "Speed" because of the movie Speed where Keanu Reeves is seen wearing a DW-5600C...that has to be one of my favorite G's

Hey buddy... great comment... yeah I'm flipped between the 5200c and 5600c with regards to being my favourite vintage square, only the 5000c gets littlest wrist time would you believe. Was interesting how G-Shocks got going, but what about the boost with the 5900c hey.... that really made the G-Shock go further to strength :) Thinking about it, the 5200c might just be my favourite, think it's the early module with the day of the week on the furthest left... anyway, I'm sure that'll change 69 times before I've finished my lines LML :-P

@@lucacadianalbert I'm letting the side down this evening with my Oceanus S100... seems to be my evening choice recently :)) Probably all of them is the right answer... need to add a GLX-5600, but which one... there's a solar version GWX-5600 that's nice... but feel battery only is more in keeping with the others :) **My words to those who haven't tried a square... you will become addicted, with either vintage, classics or the combos, and because the extras that are available to customise squares is gonna drive you further bonkers... I find the pink quite fancy, and it just shows how CASIO love to share for all... it's not for me, as it'll clash with my Bat-Mobil LML :-P

I bought my first Casio about 14 months ago, an AE-1000 World Time. My 40th Casio arrived yesterday. I have given a few away and will probably try to keep the Casio collection at 3 dozen. I have purchased some very interesting JDM models and have stayed away from any of the really large Casios. I have 6 G-SHOCKs, with 4 being squares. Here they are in acquisition sequence: GW-S5600-1JF - Tough Solar, Multiband 6, carbon fiber strap and a titanium caseback. I wear this square the most, since I use it while bicycling. GW-B5600BC-1ER - Tough Solar, Multiband 6, Bluetooth and the very comfortable combi bracelet. GLS-5600CL-1 - Low Temp LCD G-LIDE, dual stopwatches, one piece fabric strap. I really liked the strap, but the standard integrated lugs turned down too steeply for my 7 inch wrist. This is the only Casio where I had this problem. I replaced them with JaysAndKays metal lug adapters and couldn’t be happier. GMW-B5000D-1 - Full Metal Square, same operation as the GW-B5600. When this first was announced, I knew I liked it, but the $500 list price (now $550) was more than I wanted to pay. I had a maximum amount that I felt the watch was worth to me ($375), so when I saw the price dip to that with a reputable buyer, I bought it immediately. The price from that seller is now over $400 again.

If you had a crush on Martha Quinn, you’re going to love the GLX-5600VH4! I wore Casios in high school in the 1980s (and had a crush on MQ) but didn’t buy a Square until 5 years ago. I bought the DW5600-E for a beater but never wore it because of the stiff strap. After watching a few vids on the Titanium models, various Screwbacks, and the GW5000 and wearing them that I was blown away my the quality. The fun colors of the limited edition JDM releases and 35th Anniversary releases made me realize how special this model is and how great the DW-5000C was. Getting back to the GLX-5600-VH4, you can’t beat pink and blue!

I was like you, I have over 20 mechanical watches, a year ago I figured I'd get a cheap Casio (the A-168WA) to share with my daughter. Well, I now own 6 Casio watches, 4 of them are G-Shocks. I also got my Daughter a pink F-91. At this moment I'm wearing GA-2100 with JaysandKays Adapters and a nato. I just don't have to worry about these watches while I'm at work, and that's kind of nice.

My $14 Illuminator is actually what got me into loving the square. Great review and you should share some of the astro photography! Thanks for the review Dave, a bit thumbs up for you. I’ve been looking to upgrade from my “Casio Royale” to a slimmer digital watch, without losing the world time function which is one of the two reasons why I bought one in the first place - the second being having kids which I know you can relate when it comes to wearing a watch when they’re around. This looks just like it, the moon phase is an added bonus and I even Ike the color. I’ll go and check Shane’s review too and then start browsing the Casio website!

I'm late to this video, as is normal for me. My favorite DW5600 is the one I have customised for myself. It started as a DW5600BB. I swapped in a longer adjust button (10 o'clock button), swapped the display to positive, and put on a set of 22mm nato strap adapters. I quite love it.

I've got the watch Shane is reviewing , really does wear well and the solar , radio control and Bluetooth functions work well. Got the stealthed out black dw5600 and the black and white casioak , recently got the gbd800 step tracker for tracking lockdown walks , been impressed overall after avoiding G-Shock for many years.

Good review. I bought the gwm5610 a few years back. Not for the looks, but it had really gotten on me since then. I wanted a tough as nails beater watch that was easy to fit under sleeves, not heavy, and I wanted it to be kind of an apocalypse watch. Which is why I wanted digital. Less moving parts. Since then I've fallen in love with it. The only thing that eventually went bad was the strap started cracking. So I threw a Nato on it and it's been great. Definitely will be getting a couple more.

I've been enjoying a lot of watch review channels since the pandemic started, yours in particular. The one thing that stops me from getting a modern version of the DW5000 is the small pushers. I could never go back to these. True, they aren't as bad as the F-91W which I also used to have. I think all Protrek, Edifice, and most other G-Shocks have nice large pushers that are gentler on the finger tips. My recommendation is the DW9052, I have one with grey and red highlights as my beater watch. I modded it with Bullbars, strap adapter, grey NATO Strap, and covered compass .

Best value G right there but not a horological icon: The DW-5600C, DW-5600E, DW-5900, DW-6600 and DW-6900 models are flight-qualified for NASA space travel! Must have in any collection and in every collectors collection alongside VC, Patek, A. Lange & Söhne and the above easily hold their own.

I'm an analogue watch guy. Electronic time display are so impersonal and i really can't visually relate to them. I need to "see" the time in the whole 12/24 hours context, which analogue watches can show me perfectly. The digitals just shows some numbers which aren't for me. 17:47 for instance is nothing. But when i see the hour hand at (almost) 6 o'clock, i INSTANTLY know that afternoon is quite over. On the other hand, all watch enthusiasts say that a gshock is a great thing to have and also warn about not going into the rabbit hole with Casio. So, at the beginning of 2020 I came across to one of your videos which featured (among others) a Yellow CasiOak (GA-2110SU-9A). Then I KNEW instantly i gotta have it. Yellow with black accents is a sweet weakness of mine. After getting it (the Bumblebee CasiOak) I've said "ok, this is nice. Gshock chapter of my life is ticked". But a few weeks later I found myself bidding on eBay for another G-Shock. This time was a babyG, a purple ana-digi step counter (GMA-S130VC). Damn, it looked hot it was cheap and I wanted to snag it from the other bidders. Boom. Got that for under 58 GBP. Then I've realized i need solar and Bluetooth. And now I'm leaning towards a green gravitymaster (GR-B100-1A3) or maybe a GST-B200b... Now back to the squares, the only one that appeals to me is the DW-5600TB (80s throwback) in yellow/black color scheme. I might buy it as a vanity/unnecessary thing IF it will be on sale. It was - 40% on an Easter sale, BUT i wasn't so decided. I've try to keep my number of casios as low as possible 🙄 but MAYBE in the end i will lose the "battle of will" and I'll end up owning that square throwback...

Great review as usual! Love the looks of the squares in general but as it turns out not so much on my wrist. I had a really nice JDM model, the GW-M5610BA-1JF from their black & blue series. I have sold it since I got the yellow GA-2110 though, the GA just wears better on my skinny 6" wrist & as it turns out I kinda prefer ana/digi over digital as well. I just wish the GA was solar/atomic as well, so to compensate for the loss of that functionality I recently ordered myself a MSG-W100G-1AJF from Japan. It's basically a 41mm G-Steel from Casio's baby-G lineup that luckily doesn't say baby-G on the bezel. Cheers mate.

I purchased a Casio G-Shock due to me working as an instructor with the Air Training Corps which is a youth organisation here in the UK and is sponsored by the RAF. A lot of activities which the cadets do are military based which calls for a watch which is rugged, reliable and can take a bit of punishment without damaging it. I have two 5610 G-Shocks, the all black version and the regular version. Both watches have everything I need in a watch, totally accurate using multiband 6 and solar powered and a really good water resistance at 200M. After wearing these watches I can see why they are widely used by the military in any situation. Thanks for your take on these watches.

The DW-5600CC-2ER is my summer watch, super light and not much sweating when it's hot. I began using Casio with an Edifice (EFA 123D-2AV) which I dearly love, but in the last hot summers a heavy metal watch just felt bad. I also have another blue G-Shock (5146), which has A PINK DISPLAY.

I love my gold and black solar on a combi + aftermabull bars. bullbars. And I just got the silver gwm-b5000 and I can't stress enough. Yeah its over priced but its worth it if you can afford it.. you should go for it unless you have a less than 7 or so inch wrist

I don’t think a child could break this watch or even harm it significantly without matches or sharp scissors/knife. I have this model in dark grey. As has been shown, the strap adds a lot to the lug width. You have to set the tide and moon phase by looking up tables for a specific beach and setting your longitude. If the truth be told I prefer my 2900 - better fit and display - but the Missis bought the G-lide in Macy’s as a gift so it gets plenty of wear.

Great video. I bought that very model.... I can add another reason for not buying one.... I bought it for the tides and moon function, but also for the alarm....... The alarm is quite frankly a joke... It wouldn't wake me if I taped it to my ear... It's is so quiet that I wouldn't be embarrassed if it went off accidentally in a library. I would go as far to say that calling it an alarm violates the Trade Description Act. Is there an upgrade? ( Even my f91w puts it to shame). Other than that though, it's a great watch. 👍🏻👍🏻

I've never got the whole G-Shock thing. It just doesn't appeal to me for some reason... I really am into vintage pieces. However, it just sort've hit me just how 'relative' vintage is! I was born in '69, so vintage has always been '50's, '60's & '70's to me. I struggled for a long time to even consider the '80's as vintage. However, seeing an image of this piece in white made me think 'that could be straight off the set of Kubrick's "2001: a Space Odyssey" and you can't get much more "vintage" than that' It doesn't mean I'm going to run out and, well, open the pod bay bay door Dave ( see what I did there? Hey? Hey?), but it did change my view of this watch. And as an aside: even though I'm subscribed & have the bell icon on I'm no longer getting pinged when you upload... That's a bummer

My G-Shock survived my pittie after I left it out one day. In all fairness, I dunno if she was on a seek and destroy mission. She was likely curious and put off by the lack of taste. Who knows? Perhaps the other dogs said, “Boo, that ain’t a good idea!” Excellent watch. I wouldn’t put all my chips on “indestructible,” however.

Dave, before you go with your kids to a park and let them "play" with this watch, could you try to remove those molding lines from case with very fine file or X-acto knife and tell us how hard or easy it is to remove it? I like Gshock's but nasty molding leftovers makes me cry :) Thanks!

I ended up with 30 squares. Only models with solar and MB: GW-M5600/5610(U), GW-B5600 and GWX-5600. No replacing batteries or resetting the watches.

Yes but it will add a substantial premium. Better off buying a steel bracelet off Aliexpress and putting it on yourself. Plus they come in a small selection of colours (stainless polish/aged, gold, blue).

Resin bands can actually be very comfortable if worn a bit looser than standard bands. They last much longer that way as well.

Reason #3 not to buy- Toy strap that wears out before anything else. (Got rid of my strap and put it on a smooth maroon leather NATO. I'm the business now.) Reason #4- Image. Associated with high risk and jerky juvenile males on skate boards.

@@JusttheWatch For that I use my seiko 5 military (42mm), 115€ but nice colour, white hands, cool two piece nato strap ... I enjoy it a lot even being quite cheap. Besides my unit is running pretty well.
