Loved the early and midgame, was bored by the end game, hated the ending. A solid 7/10. I feel that ending took a lot of the wind out of my sails and backed the writers into a corner that they could never possibly write a direct sequel to, even if they wanted to. As if to drive the point home that the ending was not going to ever be retconned, they made the only DLC a roguelite (of all things) that follows the exact same principle. It denies you all of the usual gratification from surviving in a survival game. Still fun, though, but too muddy to be a masterpiece IMHO.

The game was too much of a cookie cutter. Throughout the story the game it lied to you, the player. It lied about how open it was, "access to all of the ship", my ass, and other thing i'd rather not go into detail about. It became boring... Specifically cuz on the higher difficulties you could really shoot yourself in the foot without any way of fixing it, unless save scumming. Plus the fact that it was all too similar to what it's "predecessors". Do NOT take this to think i dislike the game. ABSOLUTELY NOT. It indeed is a masterpiece and it stands there with VtMB for me. Which is one of the highest praises i can give it. Its brilliance, for me, lies in how much it makes you care about the people in it. And on retrospect, that is a lie from the game too. I think prey is the best game I've played. The way the ending makes you think about the very nature of interacting with video games is something I keep thinking time and time again, it's quite brilliant. For me the biggest problem with prey is the name: An immersive sim is already a difficult game to sell, so putting the "arkane system shock" to the IP of prey which had a sort of myth/hype around the sequel and even today have a cult following of the original is something that damaged Prey 2017. Every video I've seen there is some Prey 2006 fan complaining that Prey 2017 has nothing of the original, I really wished they had used an obvious name like psycho shock, psi shock, neuro shock or anything in that line, I think would make more clear what the game is about.

Excellent video, love this game to death. I could talk and write about Prey for an eternity - and i almost did that for my video. Some details that I liked, in no particular order: - the geographical cohesiveness of the station. The main lobby is an office space, visiting center as well as a break room for the employees working there. It has a museum which I assume is glorified PR setpiece for tours for potential investors/high profile visitors; a lounge right in front of the museum where employees can chill on their smoke/coffee breaks and a small break room for lunch breaks; bathrooms; and other small accommodations for visitors and employees. The sales/marketing department and HR offices are also in the near vicinity, which makes so much sense in terms of their location. Anyway, the lobby has direct connections with several essential areas which, in turn, follow the same logic. The neuromod division has foyer that serves as a visitation area (hence the luxurious fountain and the encased neuromod) and a level where only employees are allowed. The research department (I forget its name) has a lounge area right before the facility itself. There are just a few of the areas that are directly connected to the lobby. The more you stray away from these “core” facilities, the more brutalist and practical the environments become there’s no need for break rooms and other accommodations. - the environmental storytelling. Oh boy, I could write an entire essay about this. Everything from the furniture, interior decorations, posters has a reason for existing. The lamps, for instance, are inspired by a bauhaus lamp design created by Wilhelm Wagenfeld. The posters sport both early art deco influences as well as early 20s century russian avant garde (think Franz Ferdinand album covers). Not to mention that the environments are littered with 60s iconography and retro-futuristic designs. My take is that Arkane were trying to paint the picture of a world nostalgic for an idealized past that never existed. I also think the quirky art deco aesthetic of the station is a deliberate tactic employed by the Transtar Corporation to sanitize the reality of living on a station, far from home, as well as to hide its more shady activities. A note or an email, I can’t remember exactly, reveals that employees are contractually obligated to spend at least two years on the station, so they can’t quit without having to pay ridiculously large severance fees. I wanted to give more examples but the more I write, the more I want to replay it lmao. Again, great video and I’m looking forward to your next projects!

I don't even like Arkane games, but this brought up some of the best elements from survival horror and metroidvania, with the added psychological spin, like a single game can't have so many good elements, no wonder it went overlooked, it was literally too much for regular audiences... But you don't get any more game than Prey, as a long time RE fan I WISH there was an RE entry that came even close to the depth of Prey. No joke, this is just a one of the best games ever, like even that is an understatement of how good prey actually is, and most people won't ever play it. It's both conceptually and in execution ahead of its peers by SO SO SO MUCH. It even made me almost resentful that everyone was all over deathloop, which is fine, but doesnt hold a candle to Prey.

That's what I love most about this game: It rewards you for thinking less about it being a computer game and more of being a real life situation and assessing what options are possible if it were real - thinking about the weight of things, the size of things, forces interacting, etc. How can I get up there? How can I squeeze through there? How can I get that Phantom to stand right there? The less "first person shooter" and more "stealth using environment to solve situation-specific puzzles" I played it, the more I personally enjoyed it. Prey's core game loop is amazing once you start getting into it, but eventually the rewards definitely become less and less valuable. The inventory management in the beginning can be slightly cumbersome as well

@@Shyftus Sadly need to agree here. A sequel though at some point might have a warmer reception. As we know the power of KZbin, a lot of streamers and KZbinrs do share our thoughts it seems, and think Prey might have actually been the most underrated game ever. We sadle have this now, where players get w game, hate it or follow the hate train and bash games, sometimes rightfully (No Man's Sky at launch) but sometimes they do warm up to them later. NMS, Warframe, Prey, even unbelievably Fallout 76 are better received now then they were at launch and by 2020 I think people did like and buy Prey. Late bloomer this one, but still.

Bethesda could actually make a similar concept to Prey 2, with typhon and humans living together, but typhon obtaining human tendencies such as emotions and motivations, which can be good or bad.

An idea: have the Typhon twist come in a plot required audio diary of the real Morgan Yu committing suicide shortly before Typhon outbreak, perhaps desperate or driven mad by the sim lab tests. Alex, desperate to have their sibling back, allowed the Typhon to possess a corpse and become a Phantom before implanting it with Morgan's memories and forcing it through the same tests. This recklessness indirectly leads to the Typhon breaking containment.

The phantom is one of, if not my favorite enemy in all of gaming for one simple reason: It sounds like they’re saying „What‘s up?“ when they walk around.

i didn’t entirely connect with the somewhat binary playstyle of d1.. but occasionally i got the deus ex/ss1 “immersive sim” feeling in prey; especially with creating your circumstance and using the tools you have left to get out of it also nice to see wunderkind MCA worked on this game ⚡️

I bought this on release and didn't get around to playing it until a month ago and I'm so glad I did, it's probably my favorite immersive sim. The attention to detail and the enviromental design is so amazing. The entire station actually feels like a place that could realistically function and be lived in. Getting in game explanations to dumb stuff you notice like; why are they using 2d sprites for birds is so satisfying you can't help but smile. I love this game.

This game deserves to be remastered/updated in order to eliminate the loading screens between areas (which should be possible with SSD's & DirectStorage and to add ray-raytracing. Do that and you have a truly incredible game that will be played for a long time to come. Gamepass make s this happening more likely as well.

On Xbox Series X it got that sweet FPS boost with dramatically reduced load times, so there's that. I quit playing early when I was on the original Xbox One, because of those 1 minute+ load times between areas. Those are reduced to just over 10 seconds now, and it's lovely to play.

Great video, fantastic game. The pace that they introduce new areas is so perfect, it's up there with the best Zelda and Resident Evil games in terms of teaching you the layout of the game world. I do recommend hard mode to everyone that's mildly familiar with ImSims or shooters though, I'm not particularly good at games, but resource management was pitch perfect for me on hard. I was always uncomfortably low on either my pistol or my shotgun by the mid game. Freezing enemies with the gloo gun or disruptor long enough to run an mimic a coffee cup, mag dumping the weird Ghostbuster cannon-thing into a technopath to get rid of it quickly, running into a security booth and locking the door to whittle the nightmare down with my pistol, flying around the exterior of the station to get to a fabricator I've been to before, I probably wouldn't have come up with fun solutions if I was taking down enemies with a few shotgun blasts. I'd love to see a mod that doesn't pause the game while you're in the inventory, the one problem I had was that I was never in a situation where I couldn't brute force a fight by spamming medkits.
