I've played the demo and didn't much care for it yet I respect and value your opinion . I have had it happen where I've played a game and my first opinion changed due to later events in the game . What say you on this about Prey?

Because of that dumb decision lots of uninformed press and consumers just flocked it for being "too boring" and "clunky", because they thought Prey was supposed to be a horror first person shooter, instead of understand it on the merits of it being a immersive sim. Prey is just generally completly underrated. It is an absolutely amazing game and probably the best immersive sim to date. The ending might be a topic for debate - I personally found it really good but I can also see how some people are disstatisfied with all the questions it leaves you with. It seems to be a trend with this genre that it's games just can't find mainstream appeal (aside from Bioshock) which is just a shame because there is no other kind of genre that respects the players intelligence and perceptiveness like immersive sims. The multitude of different solutions and the replay value are just insane and it is truly disheartening that often times they are either not or just barely financially succesful.

PREY is my second-favorite game of all time. So then, you can imagine my excitement when I heard there was a DLC coming out. And this DLC is exactly what it claims to be on the metaphorical box. I should have read the description more carefully. I am not a roguelike person. I enjoyed PREY for its superb narrative and immersive, structured experience. Mooncrash comes about as close to those qualities as you can get with a roguelike... but that's still about an Astronomical Unit away. So if you're wondering why nobody's talking about this, it's because it's so different to the core product, and plays to utterly different tastes. You seem to like both the core game and this DLC, but I only like the core game. I wonder how many people fall into the same overlap that you seem to. I'm not saying don't enjoy it, just trying to answer the question posed in the preview image.

@@LS11557 Based on your favourites I would assume that you have played the original Deus Ex, and it's two modern follow-ups, the original Thief, and most importantly, System Shock 1 and 2. If you have skipped any of these, go play them. Alien: Isolation's game feel resembles an Immersive sim, and is mostly about stealth, and it's a really fucking good experience to play. If you liked Dishonored's high chaos stealth, the new Hitman games are amazing if you don't just go for the 'optimal' (no one will see you) route, but let the chaos play itself out if you make a mistake - this is supposedly also true for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, but I didn't play it. We Happy Few gave everyone high hopes for a Bioshock-like game, but I didn't hear that much good about it - still, you could check it out. As it is, I feel like Prey makes you make choices that make the game impossible to be a completionist with. You have to either choose to be one thing or the other.. but choosing to be one thing means you can get places, while choosing the other thing means you can fight better, and choosing something else means you have powers. It feels like the game was designed with enough enemies and security codes, and things that need to be moved, and things that make you need better weaponry, and things that require that you have powers, that you can't really have your cake and eat it. You have to pick which is more important to your play through. I am getting close to the end of Prey (I think) and the idea of having to get through even more complex areas with even more skills in dlc is kind of daunting at the moment. I RARELY replay story based games. But I feel like I missed out on a lot of things at the beginning of the game because I didn't really get the game at first. And now I have to replay it to "do it right" and get the things and complete missions that I missed out on.

It can be, but if you explore thoroughly and unlock many fabrication plans (like installed neuromods, fabrication plans are permanent and carry over between runs) you can choose your difficulty through the starting gear. For example, my 5 survivor run was quite smooth sailing because I started out with like 5 time loop items that lowers corruption, and passed them on via the mule operator. Bit of an advice: Once you unlock the Engineer, use her as your first character on each run! Maxing out her Repair skills while bringing some Recycler Charges to clear out radioactive hazards is VITAL for a clean run with the rest of the characters. The game tells you that she's not a good character for direct confrontation but it's honestly my fav character. To sum up, use Joan as much as you can during the first run: go through ALL areas and fix everything you can (doors, junctions, etc), and you'll have a well-balanced fighter who's clearing the path for all others.
@SomeOne-vf1rs2 жыл бұрын
When I played I’d either use her or the hacker first. And later on I’d use the Engineer last after I’d used all the other characters to gather everything on the map so I could have her recycle them with her as she has that neuromod that makes recycling a little more efficient and I’d try to get a few more neuromods that way. I also learned that if you buy a ton of grenades, and dismantle them all you get a lot of spare parts. After that you can shoot a control module and have it explode, then repair it which will give you a net profit of sim points if you’re feeling cheeky. I did this on level 5 to get a huge surplus of points to level up my characters and run through the map just destroying everything. Even when you’re cheesing the game it still feels satisfying - you’re reaping the rewards of your knowledge and that little progress you have between runs. You do one run to prepare for the next and you learn from what you saw in the previous one. I’m too tired to say this in a way that makes much sense, but mooncrash was a very fun experience. Feel like I should replay it soon honestly.

Whoa, I didn't think of using recycler charges to clear the radioactive stuff!
@jothain Жыл бұрын
@@flipsolo That was interesting comment indeed. Never though that was possible. That's flaw of many games though. They hold your hand and tell exactly what you can do. Some leave things for player to discover and some hint, but there lies the problem. Many to player seemingly trivial problem solving things just aren't there and then player gets bored to try things, assuming there aren't even many clever mechanics in the game. It's like I'm mechanic and there's tons off electronically locked doors. I've never seen door magnetic locks retain their locking position in case of power loss. But in games things virtually never work like this. Usually it's the exact opposite, power up and you can unlock door etc.

Deathloop looks to have a similar system of a time loop that resets and the player has to alter parts of it to accomplish their objectives. In said game they have to assassinate eight targets that are scattered around an island. One example given is that you can sabotage a scientist's experiment, causing him to go to a party with another target to drink his sorrows away. Which you can then crash and take out both of them.

Prey just isn't the type of game I want to do "runs" in, especially if there is a timer. More power to everyone that loves it, but I'm pretty sure this isn't for me, which is sad because before I knew it was roguelite I was more hyped for this DLC than for any actual game releasing in 2018.

Finished it, loved it, had a blast even after getting distracted by other games and coming back to Mooncrash to fall in love again. I love how the game was this ginormous, constantly evolving puzzle that kept shifting slightly after every run. Where sometimes you'd be all "I know where that is, I got this" and you get there and go "Oh. I didn't realize the place is on fire. WELP", or when you realize that certain items always spawn in the same place, allowing you so rush them for some guaranteed progress, etc. I also LOVE how every time you've JUST gotten used to the difficulty, the game cranks it up a notch and goes "Oh yeah, now some places in the base might not have oxygen. Also, Nightmares will spawn once in a while now, have fun with that!" I do have to say, though, I feel like I got supremely lucky with my final escape. I happened to complete The Director's story objective last and was like "What? That's it? That's the whole story objecti-....Ohhhh, this would have been REALLY useful to know a few hours ago!", then took a look at the sim, realized that the base was actually pretty low on hazards and that my corruption meter was still low, and decided to just bum rush the final escape, and aside from one single close call, I managed to pull it off perfectly basically on the fly with the knowledge I'd amassed. I do feel like you overstate the danger of the central crater by the end, though. With the propulsion jet (mandatory purchase for all characters after the first!), and the chipset that makes you hover faster with it, I was able to zip through the crater in minutes, and then bypass the typhon doors with a neat little trick. It was pretty dangerous during my last 2 characters, but that fun little trick I learned from the Director's story mission allowed me to deal with it with relative ease. There are a LOT of ways to "gotta go fast" the escapes relatively safely. Really though, I just want to see more games like this. Immersive sims in general, yes, but also immersive sims that feel like you're picking apart this giant puzzle, and where if you fail, the puzzle adjusts, throwing you for a loop on your next attempt. It's damn good, and I'm happy I picked this DLC up on day 1.

Nah, the station is always the same. The situation changes on the station as the station goes bad. It makes quite a bit of sense. It's not random tilesets of generated rooms, its random loot, enemies, and hazards. It even gives the sim inside a sim plot point to dissolve the 4th wall that goes up when your characters repeatedly die. It's an immersive sim with roguelike elements. The soul of the DLC is very much Prey.
@SinaelDOverom6 жыл бұрын
I went through the original game several times, each time with different builds, and thoroughly enjoyed all of it. I played and finished the DLC, and was only having fun on my first three or so runs, then it became a chore, and random elements were just not good enough to keep things fresh IMO. And since you have to finish the run with every character at least twice, that means that 7 runs out of 10 I was NOT having fun, but was just going through paces to finish the damn thing. The concept may be neat, but it overstays its welcome way too much.
@PHeMoX5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think people think WAY too highly of procedural generation as enough of a mechanic to provide variation. In reality you basically get a lot of the same stuff happening, with only minor details changing. I wouldn't call locking or unlocking a door a good enough variation for truly longterm replayability. The reason why in games like Binding of Isaac Afterbirth it works, has to do with a lot of the variation and change being with the character you play, the items you get and the way it influences gameplay directly. Prey has too little of that. By the time you've played each character in Mooncrash, the freshness of variety is pretty much gone. And not every character is equally fun to play, whereas Binding of Isaac allows you to effectively CHANGE your run, mid-run by picking up and using items. I would like to see games use that game design concept more.
@blindeyedblightmain35655 жыл бұрын
Nah, Mooncrash replayability is way better, in original game you will end up always as a jack of all trades, but here you are limited by time and class system. Plus, you still can and should explore Moonbase, but you will have to do right calls on right characters to do so.
@SomersKnightSky4 жыл бұрын
Personally my only major issue with the DLC is that they introduced a lot of cool ideas that didn't show up or get incorporated into the main game at all like repairing broken doorways, having turrets be repair by operator among other things. I've got to say, the 'instability' thing sounds like a total deal breaker to me. What's the point of even having a progressions system if it doesn't go anywhere? Like... Can I start a new game to reset the corruption level or dose it just stay that way. Can I turn it off? This is really disappointing, I just finished the main game and I was looking forward to this. Also, why aren't the characters playing simultaneously? To be fair, that isn't a deal breaker like the instability thing it's just a little odd to me. I have played, and enjoyed all the games you've mentioned, always on easy though. Because that's my jam.

Disthron lit resets on a new run
@compassionatecurmudgeon70255 жыл бұрын
It's important to note that you can find semi-rare items that delay corruption. So if you're exploring and fighting quickly and efficiently you can effectively delay the station getting worse. That said it's always going to decline. Resetting the sim will reset the corruption, but it'll also scramble the rubiks cube that is the station's current status. The corruption system actually really helps make you feel a bit of desperation. Just like each of the characters you play, you really wanna GTFO ASAP. Just like the rest of the game it's still all puzzles from exploration to combat. Corruption shakes those puzzles up. Could you one-hit corrupted bots with your stun-gun? Now it takes two shots, expending more time and ammo. The escape pod bay is on fire this time, you'll need jump jets, gloo, or enough health to tank your way through and escape the character. The power shut down, you'll need components to fix it. What this expansion does is make roleplaying the isolated and overwhelmed space station citizen really easy. It's like playing the game with fresh eyes all over again and it's satisfying to learn and master the layout of this tight little station. I hope you came around and got it because otherwise you're missin' out for sure.

The more i watch your review the more feels like you're talking about a different game instead of the one i played. Disclaimer, i loved Prey, but i found mooncrash a tedious experience at best: 1) Credits: I have no idea of what you're saying about managing your funds, the game litterally showers you with them, making you able to unlock an huge chunk of upgrades (all the useful ones for sure like hacking and inventory expansions) in 3-4 runs max by just buying neuromods at the start of every run. 2) Roguelike mechanics: Those are EXTREMELY restrictive. Since every chara has specializations you are forced to play every run in a specific order to grant more choices for the next chara, the engineer is the only one that can hack areas so 99.9% of the times you HAVE to start with her if you want access to some areas with the other chara, which often is a must if you want to be able to escape with everyone, since every escape can only be used once, plus as you said she can take down the shark pretty easily removing him for the others too... 3) "A to B": Ye there is no A to B decision, there is only A: engineer does all the job by opening up varius areas and locating all the escape routes AND B: make all the others escape and don't worry about the loot since after some runs you can pretty much stock up billions of ammo, medpacks, armor and psy boosters at the beginning of the area due your infinite budget. So ye, tedious at best. This is just my opinion and respect the fact that you love it so much, as i said at the beginning it feels like we played 2 different games...

Literally the only reason I haven't bought prey yet is because it uses SecuROM 2: Electric Boogaloo and I don't buy games with denuvo unless it gets patched out like with Doom 2016. It's a shame too cause I heard it has VR support now which I'm all for and the game would have flown into my steam library by now, but I just can't ethically do it.
@WMan376 жыл бұрын
I'm actually planning on upgrading from a i7-4770 to an i7-7700k soon. Though to be fair, the reason that happens with AC origins is because it has not one, not two, not three, but FOUR layers of DRM. First being steam, second being uplay, third being denuvo, and fourth being some sort of actual temporary virtual machine layer I hear. Also it's probably because of Ubisoft's Signature Optimization Quality™ Also, I don't like to pirate. Especially since the reason I have the luxury of a boycott is because I have such a huge backlog of games my deficit is just as much time as it is money. Denuvo pisses me off since it gave me heaps of shit back when I was in college with limited internet access and I was trying to play MGSV while waiting in between courses, so I don't buy games with denuvo anymore. Especially since if you uninstall a game with denuvo it still leaves shit on your hard drive, making it essentially bloatware.
@WMan376 жыл бұрын
The way I look at it is like, "Okay the point of games is to play them right? Well naturally you'd want to treat the platform you do it on well because that ensures you'll be able to play them better later." Also you should care about bloatware because it actively affects how fast your computer starts up and loads content as well as how many games you are able to put on your hard drive over time. There's also the reasons listed on whyisdenuvobad.github.io Now if you wanna buy a denuvo game don't let me stop you, but I do have legitimate reasons I will not pay a fucking penny on a game that uses it anymore no matter how good it is. Besides, missing out on whatever game I choose to boycott due to denuvo gives me time to get through my backlog.

Another neat part of Mooncrash is that the same type of loot respawns in the same location every time. This way you really get to know you way around the base, and you know where to go to find the things you need. Although Prey revisits areas, you mostly just run through them, and for that reason you don't feel at home or engaged in the same way that Mooncrash manages to pull it off.

Finally trying Mooncrash out after absolutely loving Prey, holy crap how did this DLC and the base game not get more love.

@@ULTRAOutdoorsman I mean, yeah we already established that the game was a commercial failure. It's a shame, because its a terrific game that deserved far more success than it got

This DLC was fun, but I smashed through it in about 2 hours. I escaped with all 5 before finishing the story missions, then when I finished that last story mission. It locked me out =/

Just when I thought Prey couldn't get any better. Thanks SkillUp even though I loved Prey, Mooncrash skirted my view up till now.

Sounds good and I loved Prey, but I stay away from this DLC. This video makes it sound good, but I hate timelimits, especialy in a game that is all about exploring. So basically, Mooncrash has 2 design elements that just won't compliment each other. You either rush and miss out on everything, or you explore and be screwed later on. I'm absolutely not a fan of this, and "Dead Cells" did the same shit with timed doors.

Just wanted to say, this video is the reason I bought Prey & Mooncrash. Thanks Skillup!

I loved Prey so much when I played it and even started speedrunning it without really knowing how to speedrun the game. I played it over and over again and then at some point I completly stopped playing it, because I got bored of it. I was so hyped for the DLC and then never bought it because I was (I don't know why) skeptical. Thank you so much for uploading this video! You definitly convinced me to buy the DLC!

Thank you for praising this game and its DLC like they deserve. Prey was by far the most I’ve been immersed in a video game in years.

I started playing this after playing Prey and thought, not really keen on this due to the lack of story in comparison and the comparatively weaker characters. Glad I watched this review - I can definitely see how this will be a great addition for a lot of people. Personally, this just confirmed to me not to really spend anymore time in this as it's not really got the level of story that I'd be looking for. Nice to see that they were experimenting though.

Bought it on your recommendation. It's frustrating how really solid games like Deus Ex: MD and Prey get overlooked for the same-old same-old yearly releases. Can't wait to try it out, an immersive sim-roguelite sounds really intriguing.
