@Celine Jalalifar You basically described my life LOL my parents were also against a year break but I needed it so much at that time, I was burnt out, stressed, depressed, my first year of university was trash because of that (and other reasons too). This mindset that taking a gap year is laziness and a waste of time is so toxic

Good for you knowing what you need and taking action. My HS senior is taking a gap year. She knew that her grades would suffer because she needs a break. Her dad and I support her decision. It’s important to learn at an early age to know what by our body and mental health need. You have your whole life ahead of you. Take that time with no guilt! Good luck to you!

I just wanted to say thank you for doing research and bringing this topic to us. When I started highschool, I had major self-shame issues when it came to relaxing. Even if I had NOTHING to do for school, chores, or literally anything, I would feel incredibly guilty for relaxing. It was emotionally draining. Years later, I still occasionally struggle with this, but I have been getting a lot better. This week has been insane for me, and I started falling back into the toxic mindsets I had earlier in high school. This video honestly really helped reset my thought process. We are NOT robots, and our bodies and minds physically cannot take 24/7 work. Thank you :)

This "productivity culture" is literally ruining my life. I have anxiety and it's really hard for me to focus on school. We still can't go out of our houses cause covid is really bad here in India so I can't really do much. My parents are no help to me. We have these national level exams (boards) that ever sophmore and senior has to give. I am currently a sophmore in high school which means I'll have these exams in 2022. My parents constantly force me to study and scold me for being unproductive. What they don't see is I'm trying hard to even think straight. I keep getting these random outbursts and panic attacks but all my parents want is for me too study the whole day thanks to this "productivity culture" I'm so happy someone finally addressed it. More people need to see this!

Yesss!! I really hate that guilt associated with unproductivity! We’re human. We get tired, burnt out, sick or sometimes life just gets in the way. I’ve caught myself feeling guilty for taking breaks while studying when it should never be like that! We have our limits. Also, I just want to remind everyone that we’re all different. Someone may need frequent breaks while someone is better off doing things in one sitting, so it’s okay if your body’s telling you that you need a break. And yes, even a day off is okay! Your body’s asking for it for a reason

Thank you for making this video. I spent 4 years in a toxic workplace where I was forced to look busy at all times, every assignment was an emergency, and they interrupted my vacations. It’s taken going to a new job, new job getting interrupted by Covid, and working part time to now full time for me to shift into a healthier way of thinking and to shed my old habits. Here, my boss cares if I get a break, doesn’t mind if I’m a few minutes late since I work hard, and I get an apology if I’m contacted on my day off. There are jobs out there that treat you well, and your worth is not tied to your productivity.

i agree with this comment but i just want to state that productivity culture and hustle culture are 2 very different things. hustle culture are like the people forcing everyone to start a small business, invest in stocks/money making things, if you’re not making money at all points in time then that’s not good, being your own boss, putting yourself through the struggle physically and mentally just to work and get money when you personally don’t even need to do that etc. productivity culture is what hannah is speaking about in this video which is like waking up early to go to the gym, cooking your own homemade meal, working all day, then taking a run, doing more work, then going to sleep early barely spending any time to relax each and every day. not trying to be rude or anything!

Thank you for talking about this!!! Hustle culture/productivity culture is so prevalent in academics and has caused me to believe that none of my academic efforts are good enough. I feel like both concepts can be detrimental because we can begin to think, “oh, I don’t deserve to be tired”, “I don’t deserve to be praised” because our efforts weren’t “good” enough, “productive” enough, “successful” enough. It’s such an unhealthy cycle of us feeling like we are not up to par with an unhealthy, (and sometimes unrealistic) lifestyle

This is something I think about and struggle with every day. Productivity versus procrastination is a hard line that I often fall to the latter side of. When I space out my time I am way more productive, thoughtful, and mindful of my work, health, and home. If I procrastinate in one area too long the crash is a disaster. I think one thing that has helped me a lot is setting firm boundaries within my life so I don't compare myself to others. Hannah, you've actually helped me a lot with this. Yes it is natural to see a thing and want to do or have that thing. But it is important (at least for me) that I understand where I am at in my life and how I am doing the things I need to do in order to make my life function. It is a very personal thing to have a good mindset about your own life and I'm very thankful you are so open and vulnerable about your experiences. You are real. No matter how pretty the pictures and videos are. You show your viewers a good understanding of the reality of working hard and treating yourself with care. Forced myself to take a break from college classes this summer. I usually only take 4 classes in a semester, and people take more usually, and honestly that made me feel like I was the lazy one. Even though my plate was full with just those 4, and I worked hard. I know it’s different for everyone, but this productivity culture is very real

The idea that really stuck with me is that productivity culture has made it basically impossible for us to relax. I’m on vacation currently and all I can think about is work when I get back & how I should at least be reading a book or something to stay productive (basically not just lay around). And I’m on a resort in Arizona!! That’s what resorts are made for. It’s crazy. It’s so embedded in my mindset, that I literally can’t relax on vaca. So toxic and I hope that this culture ends soon.

I hate productivity culture so much!!! I used to think i was lazy and just like you, i had the “i should be doing more” “i should be waking up earlier” mindset. But then i realized: btch! You’re in college! You are working! You ARE DOING STUFF! YOU ARE PRODUCTIVE! Like even doing the smallest of assignments is you being productive!!! And it also depends on what you’re doing, like im a doctor i have to be doing shit all the time and studying but i can also choose to lay in bed on a saturday because im burn the fck out! Andt thats totally okay!! Thank you so much for this video!,!!

You know I’ve watched a lot of college students and by far Hannah is my favourite and the fact this is the first real and raw video about how it’s okay to not always be 100% on the ball is just a relief.

I just got to the part where you're talking about the study with Italy. I'm not Italian, however I am from Europe and lived in multiple European countries. I believe we do have a similar issue with productivity culture here, however it is expressed somewhat differently. It is expected that you work perfectly all the time, so that you are having leisure time. This goes so far that you need to prove you've been productive in order for your leisure activities to be recognised as a "reward". Which in turn makes it stressful because you get trapped in a cycle of "did I work enough to 'openly' have a break right now?"

I am soo glad you made a video about this! I can relate to seeing other people being "Productive" on social media and feeling like I'm not doing enough in my life to be "successful" or "valid" as a human being and it's a load of crap! What is on social media is curated and is a highlight reel and we should never compare ourselves to others!

During this past semester, I would often find myself wishing to have free time to do some of the things I enjoy (cooking, singing, running, etc.). It wasn’t until I was finally done with school that I’ve been so burnt out...none of these hobbies interest me because of how much fuel my brain used on ‘productivity’. However, I’m slowly regaining my balance between rest and work. What a great video!! ❣️

this is so fascinating to me as well - I hope to do more hands on things with mental well being and all as a psych major - but I also find it fascinating how focused we as a culture are on productivity culture AND self care culture. it's so so bizarre to me to see both, let alone a single creator, praise both sides. self care is a very loose term that can mean many things to everyone, but it's generally accepted as like a period of rest, taking care of yourself, etc. what's even more bizarre to me is entwining both of these cultures are shown by a specific creator (btw to hate to either or any creators specifically), showing both being productive and doing things on their to do lists - but also managing to squeeze the time for self care at the end. I love that you had this conversation - you went well in details! 🥰

Hannah, you're very right! Everyone needs to hear this message in your video because they can get a new perspective. All people need to learn to rest, because in the long run it won’t work, as he put it, if a person doesn’t rest, their body will force it, but then the emergency brake will have to be applied. For me, this video have this message that should work, but only in moderation. Thanks for making this video! Have a nice day!

Productivity culture: my exams are finally over, and I can do nothing buuuut no. I feel like I HAVE to do something, it’s a very weird feeling. I can’t watch a series or youtube videos like that, I’m just like: “be more productive” It’s exhausting

"You either take time for yourself to rest or life will force you to take time for you to rest." I am really unproductive and KZbin recommends me to watch the newest upload and let Hannah defines about this productivity thingy. This is the rest I need and a reminder that my body is literally screaming for me to rest. Thank you for this TedTalk, Hannah! Ur always the best!
