I always remember on football coach at college, he used to shout at us "don't dive in" (to the tackle). He was right, you over commit you leave space and you are out of the game. In Fifa, a high level player can stop you being able to tackle the ball away and just play round you for a tap in. If you cover space, hold play up, get in good position you can disrupt and block. You can use second man press and force them to move to you and perhaps they will take a heavy touch and you are waiting there. Thanks Neal.

i run out like a nutter when I defend with my CB, but 99.99% of players cant, its important they focus on this principle first before tackling and then being aggressive otherwise they wont ever improve

Nice tutorial! 👍 I used to defend this way a few months back but was deemed too passive and would get scored upon all the time. I had to change my defensive style & become more aggressive to progress up the ranks. After TOTS though I’m leaking goals again & I think this tutorial helps to put things into perspective. To improve one should maintain a good balance of passive & aggressive defending. The real skill set is in knowing when to do what & timing of the same. I’m still learning to do that!! Aside to that, there are sections of this video where I had to really strain to hear what you were saying. Felt like you were mumbling / voice felt really distant. The simple fact is that even watching your video I catch myself that I would have picked different player to defend, so this would make a big difference. It's true what you show and it's embarrassing how AI ruins the game but understanding of the situation is more crucial while defending. And the main question is how? It's all about reading the game and making the decision to block a passing lane before your opponent, I've had some games where my opponent is soo good at predicting my next move they automatically block it, its a hard one

Get a lot of ai interceptions running around with my cdm as opposed to when I’m aggressively defending so this makes a lot of sense. I leave aggressive defending to the pros, it’s not for me and it’s honestly 10 times easier to just run around with your midfielders

Only thing I want to learn is how to use strength. My players are pushed like rag dolls and I cant push away Neymar with my Varane. Cant find it anywhere where it is explained. Hope you Neal can make a video and explain some elementary things like that 😅

Having played FUT since it first began, Neymar is just one of those OP cards. He has just enough physical stats and height that you won't push him off the ball immediately, and because of that, his pace, balance and agility will allow him to breeze past you if you don't time the challenge perfectly. Best way to defend against him is to back off him and gradually close the space until you can tackle him. Most people will give up with him and move the ball on if you back off.

The big problem is, that this 0:40 was the way to go over the years, like 20 years ago, until the ps3 era... A lot of our older folks got so used to it, that we still do it today... but yeah, all there is, is just stand in the way, block the way, and pretty much press just with the midfielders... Don't even need to sprint, just walk backward and bother the attackers from behind...

Great content, I try to play this style but how do you defend a player that whenever you get near to them they turn back and pass backwards and then move forward again? its so difficult to get near them and you make one move wrong then they are through on goal.. I dont know how to really explain the style of play but to be honest its boring but effective. They never attack head on or skill they never pass forward unless you have moved out of position trying to get near their player etc

Yh that's very boring. That attacking style is very effective even Neal himself have talked about it over and over. U don't push forward in attack but basically pass/move around the opponent half and wait for the opponent to make a mistake. Same goes with defending. As mentioned in this video u basically position your defenders and midfielders to intercept the ball or cover spaces. The person who makes a mistake either concedes and the opponent scores. That's normally how EA Sports works. Now, there are usually some negative factors like glitches, bounces, lags etc that usually makes the game biased. Therefore, one who perfectly defends is unlikely to concede a goal and the one who attacks perfectly is likely to score a goal. NB: There's no perfect attacker or defender as we are all human and make mistakes often

Most likely they're team pressing you a lot. I usually use the sidelines to my advantage when they press like that. Once you use the sides and move forward they're so much space in the back to expose their defense.

I wondered why I struggled so badly this weekend In champs, only managed 53 pts and gave my last 3 games away as was so frustrated with the game, struggled with defending and I think I got into a bad habit of moving players out of position, I really need to try and defend this way and let the opponent come into me not run out of position

Worst thing you can do is play when frustrated. I do it as well, but I notice that the way I play when frustrated from previous games is different. Best thing to do is just take like a 5/10 minute break and start again. Honestly makes such a big difference

I play in Elite Division without a meta squad, besides Cruyff 94 who I packed untradable. 41212: Ramsdale 86, TAA 89, Azpilicueta RA 88 as a cv, Cannavaro 93, Shaw 87, Kante 89, Eriksen 92, Mwepu 84, Cruyff 94, Yarmolenko 90 and Origi 89. 🤷‍♂️

That's all good but how do you switch always to the player you want? When i switch while defending it switches to cm/cdm/lb/rb all but the player that needs to be switched to. Using ball relative. Tried player relative and its same for me while L1 switching. Feels like player switching is very broken.

I have the same problem. Tried various settings and they never work as they should. The little arrow above the player's head is supposed to say who will switch to next, but a lot of the time control ends up going to someone else. The game loves making me control the CBs, so only option sometimes is to use player relative, press the switch button to control a CB then immediately push the RS towards the midfielder you probably want to control.

Very true to be fair, elite division is so boring and champs the top players do 5 star skills and basically pass side to side until they find a space, always look for the pull back or extra pass, turn, shoot and score, it's impossible impossible defend, my cpu ai is always dumb as F

@@kelynelly7761 Yes my friend, but you are probably not doing it properly, what I am explaining to you is that it works from div 10 all the way to pro level, its all the same principle, if you are losing 6/7-0, its because you are not doing it right, submit a short 30 second clip of a goal you score in the VIP discord and ill tell you what you are doing wrong Also watch all the defending/jockeying videos
