Hot-melt is a handy product to adjust swing weight on drivers, woods, and hybrids. They key as he said is knowing how much you want to add. Removal is not simple but can be done by just digging it out a glob at a time with a piece of wire with a hook bent on the end. The real issue is price - "Hot melt" is about $19 USD/tube which has less than 40 usable grams. Moreover, shipping is another $11 for the cheapest postage! I did further research, it appears to be nothing more than Surebonder AT-4930 permanent pressure sensitive adhesive which can be bought for about $6. Last - the standard (cheapest) gun is another $25 or more. I used a standard caulk gun by using a large washer at the tip end and an appropriate sized dowel to push on the back end. I heated the adhesive tube using a propane torch - it takes 2-3 mins of even heat to get it ready to flow. I added 10.0 g to my driver after cutting it down just over 1 inch to be a 44 inch driver. This helped me get it back to D 2.5 swing weight. No difference in sound since the Titleist D3 already had some hot-melt inside from the factory. I went with hot melt since I could not obtain a heavier head weight for my old D3.

I continue to learn so much from your channel. Lots of other claims it seems about hot melt. Nice to know it is only about sound. Lots of hype by marketing. Thanks for the knowledge!

It's for sure one of those topics that gets over valued as to what it can do. What it does well is cut the sharpness down at impact.

Very informative thanks. Is there any difference between the hot melt adhesive used for golf specifically and the adhesive used in high end hot glue guns? And can High end hot glue guns be used for golf purposes? thanks
@EFGMC6 ай бұрын
The golf hot glue remains tacky at room temp. That's the most important element. Any glue that stays malleable at room temp should work.

Can also play balls retrieved from the lake after 5 years to achieve similar sound.

Could the same effect be achieved with rat glue (anti rattle glue)? Hotmelt is usually dense (heavy per volume) because of tungsten powder in it whereas rat glue is lighter because it is just glue. I am asking because I would like to reach the same effects of hotmelt on the sound but without massive increase in weight on my already heavy Ping driver head. Plus rat glue is waaaay cheaper...
@EFGMC3 жыл бұрын
Don't see why not. I know some older club guys who would put yarn into the head to achieve the same thing. I have used numerous hotmelt formulations of varying hardnesses. They all seem to do the job.

Does the hot melt affect the balance of the club head if not in ejected properly? Would an expanding foam work? Thought?

injected
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
No, it’s too light and spreads out too much to affect head properties other than small weight change.

Have you ever tried to lower a spin rate using hot melt and if so is it just a matter of placing to hot melt closer to the face?
@EFGMC Жыл бұрын
It would require more hotmelt than would be practical to really adjust ball flight characteristics. Lead tape would be far more efficient for this. Hotmelt is too light and spreads out too much to work that way.

I was wondering why I was seeing irons with ports on them. My po' man version has only worked on drivers with changeable-weight ports on them. My fav was back around 2010. As always great-value-Maltby came out with his first CT250 Ti driver. It was all the rage on the waning boards at 4GEA. Maltby had designed a perfect stiff shaft match. Ultralight (55 gms, my first time with a shaft that light) but a high kickpoint, and firm tip. Perfect for an average avid golfer. Except it was loud and sounded like an empty toaster when you struck the ball. Home remedies ensued. The winner was cotton balls and yarn inserted into the head by the weight ports. Plus you could take the sound frequency from Clank! to Clunk. Then adjust the tone by adding/removing the cotton balls with tweezers.

Yeah, I think with all the hollow body irons heads out now, they decided to start predrilling ports into them since they can often sound tinny.
@cwmcclintock57573 жыл бұрын
@@EFGMC Just curious. What does the average avid golfer get in return for irons that sound like crap? They make them hollow so the golfer has to fill them with permanent plastic/epoxy? Thus lessening the reason (I'll bet) they are hollow in the first place. To spread more mass further back (MOI) and in the cavity back. On second thought, let's just leave those Qs as rhetorical. I'm sounding like I'm picking on you, while you are the most insightful golfer/clubmaker on YT. I just have to work on dealing with The Business of Golf and their uncontrollable urge to over-complicate everything. ;) That is likely not to stop me from telling someone who asks about fill to "inject about a 1/2 can of Great Stuff™ Insulating Foam into your driver. That should do it." ;)

Hot glue. Same thing as the glue sticks you use for craft projects. Only difference is it remains more pliable at room temp than some other hot glues used in other applications.

You can make most any driver sound better with enough hotmelt. The more you add, the more muted the sound. With adjustable weights in all the modern drivers, you can put a lot of melt in them and then just install a lighter weight to balance back out.
