My launch 60gb fatty is still going strong. Never been flat, always vertical and in the open behind the TV. For the last 15 years a small usb powered fan sits right in front of the intake ports, also behind the tv. I don’t have pets or carpets so dust is minimal. Still chugging along. Thanks for the video. I will say that sometimes things are made to transfer air more efficiently and extra holes would disrupt that flow. Not sure in this instance.

Extra vents I assume was only because the console itself generated more heat and used the 90nm chips. As time went on, the vents decreased because the heat needed to dissipate decreased since more efficient cell processors and RSX revisions were used. So it's not the more = better principle here. It's because those old chips needed the more vents or it would overheat and die faster, as many of them did.
@myairspace121
@myairspace121 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. What's also fascinating, that I also touched upon, is that the intake and exhaust directions were changed early on. Backwards compatible models exhausted hot air from the right side (head on) and rear of the console, while non backwards compatible models exhausted air from the rear and used the right side as another intake. These models all had 65nm CELL processors though, and later 65nm RSX GPUs.

I did a smoke test. All vents are intake besides the two in the rear. The rear vents are the one and ONLY exhaust vents on all Fat PS3 models. The only advantage that you are mentioning is the fact the older models have more intake ducts thus allowing more cooling. More intakes means more air can be shoved in and exhausted out.
@myairspace121
@myairspace121 3 жыл бұрын
That's not true unfortunately as I have tested and disassembled both 60Gb Launch Models and 80GB software BC models. I never claimed that ALL fat PS3 models exhausted air from the left and back, only that backwards compatible models do. Thus all cechA, B, C, and E models exhaust from the left and back of the systems. Any other fat model PS3 without those model numbers will only exhaust heat from the back of the console as the left side has been re-engineered to be an intake.

No need to mutilate your console by drilling holes. Just use CFW & modify the fan profile. If it YLODs after that it’s most likely NEC / TOKIN capacitors failing which can be replaced.

Not changing thermal paste for 10 or even 15 years now doesn not means it wont work like it's intended to.. I have CECHK console and haven't cleaned it or change the thermopaste at all. I fully took apart my 80 gig, cleaned out all the dust, and applied new thermal paste, put it all back together, still gave me the YLOD. I got the slim instead and I just play my PS2 games on my PS2. In reality, the light appears yellow, but what it actually is (if you take the shell apart from it) the green light comes on, but a click happens and the red light next to the green comes on too and then it shuts off with just the red blinking. I made the mistake of getting the 80 gig fat used not realizing that this YLOD was a big problem for these consoles. I could look and tell that it had been opened before, because I saw the warranty sticker was removed. Most times I played it, within just a few minutes, the fan would kick on, and get louder as I kept playing. It would eventually get super loud, and then every once in a while it would cool back down again. The pattern I noticed: the more intense the game is (in particular: newer games) the louder the fan gets and the more likely it overheats and shuts down.

Are you sure about your claims here? I'm pretty sure all PlayStation consoles just take air INTO the system through those side vents and the fan uses that air flow to blow the heat out the rear vents and the rear vents alone? I'm not disagreeing with you or saying you're wrong, I'm simply asking. As for keeping your console cool, its simple. Start using a gaming headset at all times. That allows you to just point a normal fan at the console. The headset means you won't hear the house fan. This means fast, cool air is not only taken in through the intakes, but it also instantly and continuously blows ALL warm air away from your console, preventing it from building up. This works so well that even my PS4 Pro (widely known to get very warm) barely feels warm to the touch even after many hours play.
@myairspace121
@myairspace121 5 жыл бұрын
I understand your questioning, but I am very confident that the 60Gb ps3 does indeed exhaust air out the right side and rear. I have had 3 of these models and this has been the case for all 3. Hot air does indeed come out of the right side of the console as well.

the 80gb ones that are backward compatible are exactly the same machines with the 60gb launch ones(only the backward compatibility is different, software now) so the chance is the same, they have 90/90nm chips inside the same as 60GB launch units .. so you are lucky that you still don't have YLOD. the second gen 80GB they are with 65/65nm chips and as far as I know they don't get YLOD. Also aren't you kind of over exaggerating how badly YLOD affected PS3s? The way you're talking about all these design flaws, YLOD was never anything like Xbox 360 and RROD. I know 4 people, including myself who bought the launch 60GB PS3 and none of us had failures. I know my cousins was dead on arrival but nobody got YLOD. 4 people isn't conclusive i know but I also knew around 8 family/friends who bought day one 360s and ALL of them except 1 got RROD.
@myairspace121
@myairspace121 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think it is much of an exaggeration. This model of ps3 is known to have issues with the YLOD, and it is the most common model of ps3 to be affected by the issue. With that said, you're right, it was not as big of an issue as the XBOX RROD, but it was still widespread among BC ps3 models. It will be an even more prevalent issue if the console has never been opened and cleaned since its original purchase date. (if the warranty sticker is still in place) Of the 3 60gb models that I've owned, one of them got the YLOD in the first 6 months.

Thanks! I think the NEC/Tokin cap issue is very real. The same caps have been used in other electronics of the time and have been defective there as well. I have read many stories of ylod fixes by following a very thorough cap replacement tutorial on an old forum page, and I think that a majority of ylod PS3 can be fixed just by replacing the bad caps. Of course I still advocate the changing of thermal paste and pads on these old machines, because replacing a fried CPU or GPU is much more work than replacing caps.

@@myairspace121 I agree. I think ideally if you want a fat system that will last a long time then you need to change the paste on the rsx and cpu. Unfortunately it does sound quite possible, and I think just for the sake of being safe, you should at least open up your console and clean out any dust that you see every 3-4 months. If you want to go the extra mile to be even safer, I would highly recommend also applying new thermal paste to the CPU and GPU as well as applying new thermal pads where the existing ones already were. Replace thermal paste/pads every 8-12 months if you use it frequently. Also, big tip, use your console in its upright position, not laying flat. When it is upright, naturally more hot air will be expelled from the side exhaust vent, so you will get better cooling. You don't have to mod your PS3, and I don't necessarily recommend it either. Modding is really only for the people that like to tinker and squeeze out every bit of added performance that they can. Anyway, I hope this gave you some insight, and thank you for the comment!

@@ehabsaeed7686 I would recommend at least doing thermal paste on top of the ihs, and as long as the console has enough room to exhaust hot air, then I think it should be ok. Changing the thermal paste underneath the ihs as well would be the best option though since it will ensure the best dissipation of heat from the processors. It is a dangerous process though, and as I said earlier I only recommend doing so if you're very confident.

What are your opinions on a intercooler fan for keeping a backwards compatible PS3 cooler and thus last longer?
@myairspace121
@myairspace121 Жыл бұрын
I would strongly advise against using them as the vast majority of them actually impede airflow of the PS3. It would be much more beneficial to stick a regular fan in front of or underneath the console if you are so inclined. I would focus more on making sure that the console is in a well ventilated area, with no obstructions in front or behind.

@myairspace121 you're 100% correct here. Never use an intercooler fan to blow air inside any console. With my 40GB CECHG01, it's fan is super quiet and the console stays really cool. When I tried putting a cooling fan on the console to blow cool air through the front vents (plugging it into one of the two USB ports in front. The fan got really loud. I knew then never to do that again. Since that one time, I've never had a loud fan at all

Does the wear on thermal pads and paste also apply to a new ps3? Even though 16 years has passed in storage?
@myairspace121
@myairspace121 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but not to the same degree. The paste and pads will age more after being heated and cooled many times over, but paste and pads can just degrade a bit due to age. I would say the pads are probably fine, but the paste may not be adequate. The ultimate test though would be if the console fans speed up soon after you turn it on

@@myairspace121 Well I plan on drilling right over the fan as everyone suggested, but I'm trying to get even MORE airflow because my PS3's fan was screaming at me last time I played. @myairspace121

@@GoldenFenrir if You drill bigger holes on the side where there are already holes (typically right side) then yes, that should help with more airflow. Don't drill where the Blu-ray drive sits though as that will not do anything for you. It sounds like your PS3 could use some cleaning or fresh thermal paste. Doing those should decrease your temps and fan noise significantly.

@@myairspace121 It's a Slim. I'll drill the holes in the lid on the left side next to the fan. I've tried disassembling it but I couldn't get the power supply out. I don't want to touch the mother board either. Already broke a PS3 controller after disassembly. People say you should glue the dust covers on around the holes and I'm afraid of the glue melting. I'm getting feet risers to raise the system and a laptop cooler to put under it. This is how much I don't want to touch the motherboard.
