Hey gameover. I've been part of the playstation scene for a while now and this is just mindblowing. A truly fantastic achievement getting to this stage. This video was probably the best explanation out there for rsx swap mod. Psx place can be an intimidating place especially when your not an expert but videos like this certainly help people learn. What kind of a computer (in performance) is required to emulate PS3 games on an original BDROM-disc? I was once into getting a PS2 disc compatible PS3, but after realizing it will screw me with this kind of problems sooner or later no matter what prevention method made to make the original PS3 last longer, I ended up with buying the Super Slim Edition, and a original PS2 with a HDMI converter to go around this issues. And it still works greate to this day, no fear for the devices breaking down soon.

@calyps0man

Not sure if it would become possible any time soon. i've looked into the idea and it would be a lot more complicated procedure ontop of this one. There is additional voltage source needed for newer Cells which is not present on COK boards. Not to mention somebody would need to design an interposer PCB for it because many pads won't match. But of course, maybe somebody eventually gets it done haha

On the COK motherboard from a refurbished PS3 that Sony sent me back in 2014, they only replaced the 90nm RSX for the 65nm RSX and left the original 90nm CELL. @@calyps0man I'm sorry to hear you've been unmotivated and I can understand that your rework station may not be aesthetically pleasing... ultimately, it's the results that matter in my opinion: you did a great job on this PS3 and have demonstrated you have knowledge about PS3 fault-finding and fixing. If you were to make a video about your setup, I think it would be important to have a section at the start of the video where you show what a professional setup might look like and cost. Ok, maybe that will look nicer than your setup, and if people want to pay for it that is their problem, but the goal of the video is to show *your* setup, not the best ideal setup money can buy. And honestly, people that are into modding things like this are probably not too bothered how it looks. Hell I know I have jury-rigged a few things in my time. As I said before, it's about results, so if someone said to you "lol this guys setup looks janky he must have no money!!!" I would just say "and yet, look at the PS3s he has modded with it - he actually knows what he's talking about"

Well, any time you remove parts of the case you are sabotaging the original design. I haven't checked how slim air circulation works...but if it was meant to draw in air from air vents and blow towards a specific direction, then definitely not the best practice.

Hey man I’ve been following your project and It got me thinking do you reckon we would be able to retrofit the 28nm RSX from the super slim and make in theory the ultimate rsx swap if so what would be required because I’s like to do that to my console
@calyps0man
@calyps0man Жыл бұрын
I was preparing a video about the theory of it, but don't hold your breath. While I am working on a possibility, it will take a long time to even come close to the testing stage. What is required is reverse engineering 28nm and slim boards + interposer that I could design. But since we do not have SS schematics, I have been trying to reverse the design... It's still not finished and I've been at it for weeks. Now, imagine how long the interposer design will take. But apart from that, several voltages were lowered for 28nm, so that will also need to be modified. And I have not even looked into that.... Soo, I will eventually post a video, but it will be in the style of my Cell video, where I go over what i've learned and how to proceed from there. My point is, if you want to mod your console, go for 40nm .
@calyps0man
@calyps0man Жыл бұрын
Btw, I have just discovered that 28nm has been stripped of analog inputs, which are essential for ps2 backwards compatibility boards... So even IF it were possible to retrofit, ps2 compatibility will be lost.

Hello! Great video, I have a question, the 40 minute time you use for reballing is also to preheat the PS3 board first, right? I'm just starting out in this world and my first attempt sounded like popcorn and I saw some tin balls on the chip.
@calyps0man
@calyps0man Жыл бұрын
Hi, I may have been a bit off with my time estimates. But you could preheat it for however long you wish , however best way is to bake each board in the oven for at least 8 hours at 90-100 C to get rid of moisture before you start the desodlering/reballing process. What you had is ram bleed and it's a very common issue on RSX chips, especially 90s . The small balls came out from under the Vrams (black chips on top of the RSX), and once that happens you might as well throw it out . However, there is a person who managed to replace them too... And it requires a CNC device/Laser engraver, a lot of time and practice. And most likely the results won't be the same as factory. Sometimes vram bleed also happens due to temperature changes or bad temperature profile. It's a tricky thing to figure out and you need to use a lot of practice boards first.
@kosne
@kosne Жыл бұрын
Hello, first of all, thank you very much for answering 😌! Yes, I have seen some videos that commented on the same thing, that I should preheat the chip or board for at least 8-9 hours, but I thought that with the reballing machine that I bought it would not be necessary, it would just be adding temperature curves and that's it, by the way. It's an Achi ir 6500, I imagine you know it, right? I live right in front of the beach and it is very humid here, do you recommend that I heat it up to around 90-100 degrees before then? I thought that those balls that jumped came from between the chip and the motherboard, even so that chip was possibly dead before putting it in the machine and it is the one that I am using for tests to practice... since I am you Honestly, the videos I saw from Ripfelix and yours encouraged me to try it too, I have bought some more backward compatible PS3s and I have ordered some 40nm chips from AliExpress that I hope work well, for now I have removed the syscom errors from several boards already. I'm inexperienced at this, but I'm determined to try!!
@calyps0man
@calyps0man Жыл бұрын
@@kosne If you're talking about the bottom preheater, it is important to let the board reach about 100-150 C at the top with only bottom heater before you switch on the top heater profile. Let me rephrase, you preheat the board with the bottom heat only until the readings at the top of the board show 100-150 C. At least that's how I do it. But you may have to test it out , it seems it works differently for everybody. I do believe it's important to definitely dry/bake the board before any of this however. Especially in a humid climate. Do keep in mind that aliexpress chips may be faulty, there's no way to know. Also I definitely made it seem easier than it actually is. Be prepared to kill lots of boards. The ACHi station is not perfect for this, I haven't used it personally but ive heard people who ended up modding it and it still didn't always work for ps3 boards. Also do ensure the station is earthed properly. Some of these cheap chinese made devices are fire hazards. Also watch out for the plastic connections and all the mains connectors with 110-250 volts (Depending wherre you live) . Those may melt if they're cheap quality.

I tried many solutions, but I came to the conclusion that it's not feasible to do all the work to keep a ps3 fat working for more than 20 years (I like my devices to last many years, because I collect them). Unfortunately there are several other problems in the project, and the cost to fix everything is unfeasible. So I ripped everything from the inside, built a ryzen 5700G computer with igpu, and it was able to run PS3 games perfectly via emulation. There are still titles that are not 100% compatible with the emulator, but it is a matter of time for this to be resolved. So I set up an XMB menu to launch games, a 4TB hard drive to store my favorite games, and a slot loader type bluray drive (I haven't tested physical games on it yet). I'm currently developing a project with arduino to turn on/off and eject through the PS3 panel, including the characteristic beep. As my ps3 was a FAT with 4 usb ports, it also has a memory card reader, which I will convert to USB in the future. Advantages of my project: - I can play many games that ran at low resolutions (below 720p, like fallout 3 and GTA IV) in native Full HD - low noise - Much less heat - Lower electrical consumption - Ability to use much larger hard drives than a vanilla PS3 could - "Backward Compatibility" with PS1, and PS2, and a much higher level of graphic quality - I don't need jailbreak or homebrews to run my "backups" Disadvantages: - Some games still cannot be emulated perfectly - No PSN (although I think sony turned off psn support on ps3 a few months ago) - Nostalgia?

I'm quite sure everyone has heard of a PC and emulator. This in fact applies to every other console as well. Yet a lot of people are still buying retroconsoles... So idk, different tastes for different folks. I'm not sure why you have come to the conclusion that it's not feasible. I mean, the work was shown mostly as an example that it is possible to repair it and make it last longer. I wasn't saying that everybody should buy their own station and learn reballing skills just for that. I myself have finally managed to improve the process so every now and then I sell them. But there are also technicians offering services. You're right about one thing, it is rather tiring to build... However , I still find it fascinating. Also PSN still works.

hello friend, I did the process of changing the rsx and training the syscon, and I was successful, but in the voltage mod, I used 2k2 and 4k7 resistors following the @deadend model, and I got ylod 3034/4002 that is related to welding from mod. I used 5% resistors, @felix told me the correct one would be 1%, would that be the reason for the ylod?
@calyps0man
@calyps0man Жыл бұрын
Hi. I doubt it's because of the resistors. It's hard to say, maybe the soldering wasn't successful. Maybe the 40nm was faulty . These boards are sensitive.
@alleembalagens6334
@alleembalagens6334 Жыл бұрын
right, but before starting the voltage mod, the device worked correctly, I installed cfw evilnat, played heavier games, I believe it is not 40nm. I think that in the worst case scenario, the resistors count is below 0.95v (necessary for 40nm) and causing the system to shut down.@@calyps0man

It took awhile to finally find the real cause of PS3 failures, that probably Sony already new, but did not wanted to share. I had one of the first 20GB models that failed soon after they removed the otherOS, which I did not upgrade, instead I got another used PS3 to play with. It was weird, It was a console that I did not use much, sat on my desk, did not get hot etc, but failed anyway. I used that 20GB model to play GT4 in 1080i resolution, it looked real good. I also installed Linux on it, made couple videos showing few emulators and games. Fun times. The process to install new RSX looks too complicated for mare mortals. Thanks to RPCS3 developers we can play our PS3 games on a PC.

yeah the ps3 can still fail but, it won't be bone caner though. i'd rather have a bad valve cover gasket then needing to have the entire engine block bored and machined. unless the PCB it's self faile but, i'd think with good thermal pastes or liquid metals and improved fan curves and keeping the entire console well ventilated would seriously help. i'd think instead of PCB failure it would be psu recapping needing to be done

What kind of bittraining error? Is it the same as I showed at 23:53 ? Where it says FLEXIO_ID ? IF it is, then either you didn't enter the bittraining code correctly, your voltage mod is not working or it could also be a bad reball so balls are bridged. @@calyps0man Thank you very much for responding. Right now I have 2 working slims and they are enough for me, but if I decide to get a backwards compatible model, I'll contact you. I was asking because I also have a backwards compatible unit, but it does not have the EE and GS, it emulates the PS2. I suppose that anyone who has a 40nm RSX would reserve it for the real backwards compatible system and would not be interested to save something like mine. I don't have the equipment to do the work and I don't have the skill, so if I attempt something like that, I'll probably kill it beyond repair. So, basically what I meant was: will people who do this work say I'm not wasting my time and good chips on that, just buy a real backwards compatible one? Thank you for your time and sharing the knowledge. I've subscribed and I've also subscribed to RIP Felix. I would very much like to be able to do what you guys do and your videos are very interesting.

@@calyps0man It is. It's CECHC04, but it has some problems. When I got it, it has already been molested, but it booted up and everything was working, if you don't mind the fan taking off on idle, that is. I decided to de-lid it and I did the job, but when I was done it just went YLOD. I inspected the chips again visually and everything seemed fine, I didn't see any visible damage. It is possible that I cracked the solder balls under the RSX when de-lidding, but I can't tell for sure. I just bought a USB to UART convertor and I'll attempt to read the syscon errors at some point. I also broke off the little plastic notch on the side of the BD ribbon connector on the motherboard. It was too stiff and I just pressed it harder. I admit that was my dumb @$$, but on the de-lid I think I did a clean job. It has been in some shady repair shop before it got to me, so I don't know if they baked it or what they did to it. The poor thing was missing parts: screws and the HDD caddy mainly.
