I was in the Navy when First Blood came out. My buddies and I would go on Rambo weekends and try those things out. We quickly found that the "survival" knives were pieces of junk, but the other stuff Rambo did was useful and fun to replicate.

Sawback knives were tried in Viet Nam. They stuck in enemy ribcages until someone had the time to break the bone(s) and pull them out. Suicidal. Victorinox and Gerber make excellent sawblades. I have no experience with the others, but there are plenty of evals on KZbin by responsible people. My personal choice is a full length Kabar, a Victorinox Mauser knife, plus a diamond steel and ferro rod.

Survival knives were only junk. If you bought cheap junk. I had quite a few trash gimmick survival knives, but I had one I got as a gift in 1987. On my 12th birthday and it wasn't junk. I had that thing until ten years ago. When I let my son borrow the damn thing and he lost it somewhere. But my dad paid a couple hundred 1887 dollars for my knife. It was the best birthday present I had gotten. Since I had gotten my last new bike and until I got my first real rifle.

It is not as bad as that piece of crap the Navy issued us before Viet Nam. I broke mine on the fist day of jungle survival training. I bought a Cold Steel Tanto I carred for 14 years flying in the Navy and then 10 years a bush pilot and it never failed.

Rambo was a bad ass even though it was a movie. He was “trained” to survive through anything and honestly I think there are people in this world that could do the same but they wouldn’t have the benefit of cameras. “I don't think you understand. I didn't come to rescue Rambo from you. I came here to rescue you from him.” Best line from the movie!!!!!

I loved First Blood when it first came out and all the survival stuff I would go on to learn a lot more about. But having watched it back recently I'd missed out how it's really about soldiers returning home after war and having PTSD and being unable to fit back into society. Also about how shittily they get treated by the nation they were fighting for.

It's just Hollywood propaganda. They tried to paint veterans as all having mental health problems because they spoke out against the war and the conservatives wanted to blame them for being weak mentally. There is also no evidence that veterans were mistreated when they got home. This whole thing about being called babykillers is a bunch of nonsense. A large contingent of the anti war movement were veterans themselves. They wouldn't be calling fellow soldiers names.

Rambo's knife was a screen device. He needed a blade that was big and intimidating. Orignally, Stallone (a knife collector) wanted to use a Randall 18. The knife made for the film had a large saw-back, so it showed up better on screen, and the misconception of the huge teeth as a requirement soon followed. The Randall and the Air Force Survival knife have much smaller saw-teeth.

Yep clearly a screen trope like Crocodile Dundee who had a knife and a half. I do have a Bowie of similar proportions but seriously it spends more time on my wall than anywhere else although I use it now and then for a bit of wood preparation. It would certainly not be my first goto for a survival situation where I think a six inch blade would be more than sufficient.

It's not just the knife that helps you survive, it's the combination of the knife and whatever other survival tools you put inside the handle that help you survive. I've had several of these over the years and most of the blades are junk, but the kit inside the handle is a different story. Many of the kits were extremely useful, even though the quality wasn't the greatest.

My dad was an avid backwoods outdoorsman. From necessity not hobby. He spent his life from teenage years to early thirties living in the woods literally off the land in the late 1940’s-60’s he was in his late 30’s when he settled down but still provided for us with a trap line. He always carried a pocketknife and half hatchet in the woods never carried a belt knife. I was a boy when Rambo came out and saw a “Rambo survival” knife and bought it for him with money made from my own trap line thinking it was the perfect gift. He lit up and thanked me profusely. It was perfect! Had a hollow handle, compass, saw back and rock in the sheath. He then put it in a fire box so it was safe and never took it back out😂. I still have it in the same box he put it in along with all his other knives. Today is his birthday and he would be 88 if he was still here. Thank you for stirring up that memory.

A few years back I went on a short, guided hike led by a park ranger who also led wilderness survival classes. At one point he stopped talking about useful plants, etc. to say, "Please, if you don't get anything else out of what I tell you, today then at least take this away with you; please, please don't ever go into the woods without a knife." I was already on board and always have at least a folder but was even more on board after that. I think he wasn't talking about going camping, hiking, etc. with just a knife so much as he was saying even if you think you are just going to take a quick walk in the woods or even if you are just going into the woods to gather berries, etc. then at least have a knife on you. Oh, and I am sure this just slipped your mind but, depending on where you are the knife can help you get water. If there are suitable vines in the area and you know which ones are okay you can cut through a big vine and fair amount of water will run out of it. Generally don't drink if milky looking or really cloudy but otherwise it can taste pretty good.

I will only say this: Back in the day, I bought a large saw-back hollow handle knife made by Buck. It was good quality, and seemingly stood up to everything. But I learned a lot during military survival school. The compass in the handle quit functioning after using the knife to chop large diameter wood and the vibrations of the hollow handle were painful to my hands during those tasks. And, in light of everything else, the weight of that much steel really showed during constant carry. Within three hours of the second day, i was ready to chuck that weight as far away from me as possible. Now I carry a 4 inch blade, usually (but not always) full tang, and do everything i need to do.

Just to be clear, I usually agree with 99% of your content. I even watched you on Alone. That being said, as someone who’s worked in the industry, Hollywood always screws up a good story. The “Rambo knife” was actually created for the movie specifically. Even Sylvester Stallone has come out against “the knife” after he did some survival training with a real survivalist for “Ram 2 or 3” I don’t recall. Now… John Rambo was a Green Beret, which means that he had survivalist training, and when given the opportunity he was using his skills to survive implementing the 5 C’s. He also made traps (against humans, but traps nonetheless). Killed a wild pig, obtained cover, (tarp & cordage, and a deputy’s jacket). Constantly scrounging for materials to make his situation easier. Even though it was a “Hollywood knife” he was given all of the tools that he would need to survive the landscape (ie. matches, sewing needle and thread, fish hooks etc.) in the handle. He was also able to make fire and torches in a cave. The knife was CRAP (not full tang), again Hollywood; however, it is easy to believe that someone with his training and skill set could survive in those woods for a few days to a week.

Everyone nowadays thinks a knife handle is crap if it doesn't have a full tang. Nonsense. A lot of durable knives have been made that lacked the full tang feature. I agree a full-tang handle is the most solid design, but that's not to say all others are not strong. I own some excellent and very durable knives that aren't full-designs. The Jimmy Lile knife used in "First Blood" has a tubular handle, but machined out of quality steel, it'd be damned near impossible to break under almost any real-life circumstances.

Rambo uses tricks that can be found in the SAS survival manual. At least, in First Blood... that stuff is great to know, but it's supposed to just help servicemen get out of trouble and captivity and return to their lines. It's not for long-term survival. Still, rambo ruined nothing. If anything, he showed us 80ies kids that such a thing was possible. We always knew it was just Hollywood, but those of us who were boy scouts and later campers and soldiers, did get interested in learning more about survival because of this movie. (A bit like those who would have never started martial arts, if it hadn't been for Karate kid ) 🤔. I think it was a good introduction to a wonderful world of knowledge, in combination with timeless, classic action

You are correct, Poor Rambo. I too, loved Rambo, and my son who is about your age was a Rambo freak also. You have the right idea, just reach into your haversack and pull out your tarp, or fishing kit, or whatever you need. But, what if you do not have your haversack, for some reason it has become separated from you? The knife and the skills that go with it become very important. We need to practice the skills as if no haversack is around. My aforementioned son and I had a discussion when he was 11 years old about survival in which I told him a man can go into the forest with just a knife and live a full life. He has since that time proven that over and over. I love what you put out on your channel and so does he, great stuff. I do however stand by my statement to him over 30 years ago, you can go into the forest with just a knife and live. We need to practice those skills over and over again and again. I always felt the whole point of those movies was that Rambo was so skilled, that even if he didn’t have a knife he would still be able to survive and win the day. It was the whole hero thing. In real life, if you do a little planning ahead and carry just a few key items you won’t even put yourself into a survival situation. Why build a bow drill when you can just carry a lighter or matches? Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to learn those skills. I love using flint and steel to start a fire. If I’m freezing cold and wet I’ll grab the lighter or a freaking road flare if I have one. That’s not the time to be playing around.

You have brought up an important point regarding the CHANCE to survive. Having knowledge and skills and practicing them are more than just awesome, but the number one rule of survival is to not get into a survival situation in the first place. Basically, having to do it is one thing; choosing to do it is entirely another-and potentially stupid-thing. Remember in THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS when they were running and jumping after that elk all through rocks, logs, cliffs, and creeks? 😂 The real old-time frontiersmen would have NEVER endangered themselves thus-a severe injury that remote in those times was certain death.

I was just telling my wife last week how I probably had a half dozen of those $15 dmRambo knives when I was a kid back in the 80s. Good times!

When I was young and poor I used an old Case single blade Arkansas toothpick with a (home repaired) broken tip as my one and only outdoors knife. I think I traded a nice ballpoint pen for it. It literally did everything pretty well. I don’t ever remember thinking I needed a better knife. Later I used a SAK Huntsman as my main outdoor tool. Larger and better quality knives are actually better and more useful, but you don’t need them most of the time.

100% correct. I have Condor Tool and Steel Hudson Bay(big butcher knife) and it's a heavy blade that I can use for cutting meat and vegetables. It is also quite handy for chopping down small saplings with ease. However, I use my folding pocket knife more than the big one...

I always pack around my gun, and my knives. I have different knives with me for different tasks. (Cooking, fishing, battoning firewoid, etc) i also have a huge survival knife I bought back in the 70s mainly for the snake bite kit, which I could not find seperately. I enjoy this channel.

Forgive me, sir/ma’am, but can you please describe that snake bite kit as closely as possible? I’ve been doing a lot of research lately about just such things, and there are way too many schools of thought about treating bites in the field. However, the most prominent plan is to get to the emergency room as soon as possible.

Hey, thanks for your response. You confirmed one of my greatest fears, which is a continuation of past shit. When I was toddler, dad had the olive green military kit; when I was a teen, there was both that and the yellow one by a somewhat famous outfitter; and then came the syringe suction devices. In old times, this was the order: immediately chew plantain, pack it upon the wound, and proceed to the emergency room; pack the wound with “fresh” charcoal and continue to the emergency room; cut out the affected areas with a sanitized blade, stabilize the wound, and then proceed to an emergency room.

I recall reading that Tom Brown Jr. walked into the Pine Barrens with only a knife and stayed a year. He also left his clothes behind too, and made new ones off the land. I think it was in Tom’s book called The Tracker.

At first, I thought - but it's so obvious. Then I remembered that kids are watching this as well and they need to know that non full thang blade with a canopy serrator which is not a wood saw is a poor tool for survival... yes, I guess we all stick to knife as a first item cuz we see it as a weapon (although it's rather a tool) and it gives us confidence. Well, confidence also plays a role in "survival". Great video Dan!

I actually remember the commercial where they sold the Rambo survival knife with all the extra goodies they stuffed into the hollow handle: fish hook and line, fire starting elements, etc. when I was little I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Now I’m like I guess tangs are overrated lol

I think that first blood awaken the deep feelings in many who were to spend the rest of their lives doing camping, survival. Of course it was only a film and we could dream about being Rambo whilst learning skills . My skill set zoomed after doing a Ray mears course with Ray himself back in 90/91. Never looked back, always learning new stuff moving forever forward and I still hold Rambo dear to my heart as an icon. The closest I came to back then was in fact a duck😲😂😂 Cooked over a fire it was like Sunday Dinner😉 Love your channel Dan 🔥🔥🤜🏻🤛🏻

Great video. I had one of those, the blade was a 420 stainless, I didn't really care for but the handle held a few matches,a small amount of fishing line and hooks plus a sharpening stone. I did run down a small ground hog once and brought it home for supper. I never tried to make a spear. That would have been cool.

Great video Dan but I didn’t laugh out loud until the very end when you talked about hiding in a mud puddle and getting someone. I will admit that I am a knife whore and have dozens in different shapes, sizes and designs but I only have a select few that I use regularly. My Rambo knife is for battoning, scraping, and shaving. I think you need to update the ending with a mud puddle scene. Peace brother

👍 Good practical advice, although hard to believe anyone thinks the knife is all you need. Although Sylvester Stallone made one too many of these movies they were good entertainment, but we’re never meant to be survival tutorials. Even in the olden days people created other implements - See Otzi’s gear.

Knife is probably most important tool to have... to utilize all other tools. Knife to knock small limbs off sapling to bend for bow shelter. It's like the question, "Trapped on an island/ridgeline by yourself what ONE item do you want with you?" Sturdy knife would be the #1 answer on Family Feud.

I like you grew up watching him stop the Red menace in its tracks. At the outset of the great plague of 2020 and the further “Late Unpleasantness” which is me politely saying, “The looting rioting and murders led by an organization that shall not be named.” I had a lot of free time, shocking I know. However, in that time, I read the book first blood. You hit the nail on the head. It’s told entirely from Rambo’s perspective. From his training, to the fight with the cops. They don’t go into survival manual levels of detail, but it is more carefully explained what his survival skills are, and how he acquired them. The knife gets very little attention past practical usage. They focus on his mindset and his skills. It’s a great read. But to the point. Tools for bushcraft are awesome. Someone’s always doing something new. An it’s just fun for us. The skills are the key though. Can you use them? what tool for what job? This is one of the reasons I’ve been a long time subscriber and supporter. I learn so much here. An I pass it to my kids once I get a handle on it. Thank you Dan, you are one of the greats. An yes. The axe is king. I’ve proven it, so have you, I challenge all comers to prove me wrong. ❤ From WNY.
