Another great discussion. Of course Wera and Tom are awesome, but Johanna you also make them shine. You are so good at organically steering these conversations in a way that makes it feel natural while still giving every person or interesting topic sufficient attention without any conversation really overstaying.

Okay but this might be one of my favourite Why Read episodes to date, what a wonderful vibe!! 😍 I especially loved the chat on existentialism. And interesting to hear Wera's views on The Witcher translations, because I have personally been thinking of reading them in Dutch since I have heard from multiple people that the Dutch translation is much more faithful than the English one. Also, PLEASE do yourself a favour and read Liveships already, Johanna 🤣❤

Liveship is on my TBR of shame at this point 😆! I’m so happy that you enjoyed the Witcher and existentialism discussion! Thank you so much, Esmay! 🧡🥰

Such a fun chat! Really enjoyed a long chat about WOT, I feel like it is very out of vogue at the moment. I was tearing up hearing you all talk about your pets. I gave my cat some extra love after that ❤

Great video! Loved the wheel of time discussion and the discussion about expectations and how they impact our experience. I am currently on book 7, so far I have liked the books more and more till book 5, read 4-5-6 close together and I thought everything slowed down A LOT in book 6. The great ending does not change the fact that not much else happens in that book and that lots of setup doesn't pay off (yet, probably). That's not a take I've heard very often so maybe it's just me? I took a break and now am about half into book 7 and having a good time. Maybe I adjusted my expectations about the slowing dowm and things not being resolved till mutiple books later :) I am in love with the worldbuilding, the magic, I'm not very good when it comes to imagining settings in my head but The Wheel of time does that for me so I don't mind the writing style too much. And yeah some of the gender war stuff is a bit annoying, depends on the book, but nothing horrible so far and lots of great female characters. Gender is very binary though (it was the 90's)

Thanks for sharing your experience so far, and I’m glad this discussion helped! I can enjoy descriptive world-building within reason, and it sounds like Jordan wanted readers to feel as immersed as possible. Happy reading!

This was such a great discussion. I’ve been on the fence about The Witcher, so it was lovely to hear from someone who could read the books in polish and highlight some of the issues ☺️

Thank you! Wera offered so many insights about the translation!

Nicely done on this video! I came in late so had to rewatch the Wheel of Time discussion.. my favorite series! I agree about the slog being books 8-10, but all three still have some really big moments in them.. I hope you give it a try Johanna!

I relate very much to Wera's story about being a lurker. Murphy Napier put out a video where she was rewatching some of her deleted videos and I remembered the ones all the way back from 2019. I just started commenting on videos and made a channel this year. 5 years later! 😅 lol

Hahaha! I remembered some of those videos too from when I was BookTube lurker! 😂

Deadhouse Gates is my favorite book in the Malazan series. I thought the first half of Gardens of the Moon was ...unevenly written. I knew that beforehand so it didn't bother me.

That's a far more popular opinion than Tom and I have! Glad you were prepared for that. Haha!
