Perhaps you've seen or heard a land acknowledgment before - it’s a brief statement recognizing Indigenous peoples as the original stewards of the land where others now work, go to school, or shop. But if you admit you've taken something, says Indigenous scholar Lindsey Schneider, shouldn't you give it back? In this surprising talk, Schneider explains why the Land Back Movement is good for us all and shares how tribes like the Wiyot in California and the Niimipuu in Idaho are revitalizing environments damaged by settler colonialism. Dr. Lindsey Schneider is a Turtle Mountain Chippewa descendant who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by rivers, big trees, and salmon. After getting a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Riverside, she worked at the University of Idaho, supporting Native American students and building relationships with tribal leaders. Today, she is Assistant Professor of Native American Studies at Colorado State University. Her research focuses on settler colonialism, the environment, and how Indigenous peoples navigate legal and political barriers to sustain their relationships with the land. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This was beautiful. Thank you Lindsey. I think that as people start to wake up land back will be an inevitability.

Pray for Lahina. Native lands in native hands. Eminent domain policies are inhumane. Homeless galore due to corporate taking of Ancestral land. Over development is destructive!!!

God loves you and takes care of you for the arrival of this message to you. God exists and He is the one who controls the universe. The biggest loss that a person can lose in this life is to live and die without knowing God and His Messenger Muhammad and the Islamic religion is the last religion after the Torah and the Bible. I advise you who read this message to read The Qur’an is translated in its own language, and after that, you can decide whether you are convinced of it or not. What is your feeling after death, and you see what awaits you from God’s torment, an eternal loss of intelligence to know and read, and you have the judgment after your conviction.

Indigenous people make up 5% of the world population? Nearly all Chinese and Indians are indigenous and that's 2 billion of the world population.

I agree that is the dumbest unqualified statement I have ever heard. Where exactly are the Comanches, mongols or Lakota indigenous to?

pretty sure she meant a specific group or "subject" of native peoples, more specifically those of minority. she didn't explain who those 5% actually were which is a bummer I know. I myself am native hawaiian
