As concerns mount over the political climate in the United States, a significant number of Americans, particularly retirees, are accelerating their plans to move abroad. Marsha Scarbrough, an American expatriate dubbed "La Primera Exiliada," symbolizes this shift after relocating to Madrid following the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.

Unfortunately, most Americans are conditioned to the high stress, hustle lifestyle. They live to work instead of working to live. Spain and most of Europe has a much lower cost of living, great healthcare, clean and safe public transportation, walkable cities, healthy food, safe schools and good climates- no hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards. Be thankful you got out and are living a great life in retirement. 😊

You are right. The great hockey player jaromir jagr was once asked after spending most of his career in the US was once asked what's the difference between Americans and Europeans? He said it seems to me Americans live to work and Europeans work to live. How interesting.

After finishing my culinary internship in Barcelona in Oct 2016, I had to leave the Schengen zone, so I went to Romania. On election day, I went to bed believing Clinton would win so I was shocked to wake up to find Trump won. I kept traveling but returned to the US and stayed through the pandemic. Now age 63, I have my own business but plan to retire to Europe soon. Not only due to politics but everything else you mentioned - guns, crime, inflation, weather, etc…and just because life is better elsewhere.

As a fellow US citizen that lives in the spain, I hope that this person knows (and other US persons abroad) that you can still vote in US elections. One may be able to move away, but we will never completely escape these issues. As good global citizens, it is our responsibility to vote. Vote from Abroad is a great group of volunteers that help US citizens request their ballots and offer advice on how to return their complete ballots successfully. Voting abroad is different than voting absentee in the US.

So, I watched the first 7 minutes of the video. She didn't leave the US necessarily because of Trump; she had planned to leave for Spain even before Trump announced he was running because of her financial situation as a retired person. I applaud her. And for all those MAGA haters out there, just be aware that you can't count on Social Security to make ends meet after you retire if you plan to stay in the USA. And your friend Trump won't help you.

Biden and the Dems are spending whatever we would have expected to get in retirement from SS on faux wars that don't pertain to us, so not exactly like ANY politicians are "helping" the average American.

What? Did the MAGA goons disappear? Is it safe for black people to interact with cops without being killed? Are all the homeless encampments been replaced by clean, decent affordable public housing? Have they melted down the 400 million guns, or at least stopped selling guns to anybody with money?

USA has been at war 93% of it's existence. Over 40K people die every year from gun violence. Robberies and burglary is out of control. More and more becoming homeless every year and living in cars or in tents. What a country.

Trump inherited a very good economy from Obama and Trump left an awful economy for Biden. Biden has done an excellent job of bringing us out of the economic mess that the pandemic caused. We have very high employment and the economy is poised for a soft landing. Inflation would be uncontrollable now if Trump had won in 2020 instead of 3% as it is now because Trump would have bullied the fed into keeping interest rates low.

@@Kretch54you obviously have no understanding of basic economics. Far too many Americans judge a president based on what the price of gas is right now. It must be terrible to live in a perpetual state of ignorance and to have to worry about gas being more than $3 a gallon.
