I went to Turkey for a couple of weeks, I fell in love with the place, the people and the food. I wish we had that kind of laid back life here in the U.S. I will definitely be moving to Turkey in a few years when I retire. There is no better option. You made The Right choice..!!!

The most important thing is what are the requirements for one to get a long term residency. One cannot just hop to another and settle there. As a US citizen you can stay for 3 months but can’t overstay.

I worked just outside of Colon at the Refineria de Texaco for 11 months in 1994-95. Patacones are delicious with fish and meats. The only local beer at the time was Sobrana and Panama beer besides some American beer. We was staying at the Hotel Washington.

Heard your story in another KZbin with International Living and now following you. I once lived in Spain as a Foreign Exchange student in Valencia. Returned to marry someone I dated but Franco was dictator and we were prohibited to marry. I returned to the US. Today at 73 I have just received my passport and want to return. The health insurance is an issue though I read where some private companies have extended the age limit. With a house to sell and an elderly cat that can't fly, I have created a lot of anxiety for myself but like you, unable to tolerate living in the US. Our political divide, the cost of living, the violence, the crime, the mass shootings etc. The USA is not the same country I grew up in. I never dreamed a convicted criminal, and one charged with sexual abuse would be the President of the US - twice! And in Georgia our governor singed in an abortion ban thus two women needed an abortion to live and was not granted. They both died in need of an abortion. That is mind boggling for me. As you said, I want to live my final years in a more peaceful country where my values are aligned with the country.. Though Spain has changed too I continue to hear good things vs living here. Thank you for sharing. and I hope will be returning to Spain asap. Will be my 4th trip there! But this time I hope it is permanent. Brushing up on my Castilian Spanish. Ironically I left because of one dictator and now am faced with a President that feels like the same as Franco. And a governor too. Thank you for coming into my life which feels like it is an omen for me.

I agree with the safety and free healthcare but affordability? I'm curious about the rent situation because most apartments are 10k tl yet you say you spend 600 USD a month. Expats are a fancy way of saying, privileged immigrants. Just because you are white it doesn't change the fact that you are an immigrant. Nothing to be ashamed of.

I have been living in Turkiye for about eight years and love it. I think you are spot on with your expenses. I live east of Alanya in a private villa house. Our water bill is around $50 a month, but we have a two acre property with trees and garden that needs watering. Our electric bill is around $50. Everything is grown in Turkiye, so fruits and veggies are cheap. Our grocery bill is about the same as you. I think we spend around $800 a month to live in Turkey, but again, our property is paid for like yours. I would like to mention that the Turkish govt is changing rules to live here. The income level requirement is higher. With the influx of Syrians, Russians, and Ukrainians the Turkish people are tired of foreigners living in Turkiye. They like the tourists, but not so much the influx of permanent residents. Hopefully this will change when the Syrians start returning home. Hopefully the Russians and Ukrainians can find peace as well. Turkish inflation is the highest I have ever seen it. The dollar does not keep up with inflation anymore now that the Turkish Central Bank started controlling the dollar exchange rate. Not sure how the dollar will leverage against the Turkish Lira in the future. Overall, Turkiye is a great place to live. I hope it stays that way.

What about healthcare? It says you paid $200,000 in the Title; you said $420,000. Someone left France because they could not get a doctor nor open a bank account as Americans.

Misleading to say that the cost of living is only $607. This is because you guys are not paying rent. I also didn't see any healthcare or insurance expenses in the breakdown. But to be honest you guys covered healthcare expenses at 15:25.

I was born and growup in Turkey, I worked for 25 years, I still haven’t bought a house, I pay $1000 rent in istanbul, food, drink and other expenses at a minimum of $600-750, so I don’t have a living cost below $1600-1750$, how do you make a living for $600 🤯

I was born in Turkiye and went to the US for education in year 2000. Spent 8 yrs in the US and since then I live in greater Toronto area in Canada. Life in Canada has been worst since the pandemic started including housing costs and daily living cost. Typical rents for one bedroom apartment building is more than 2500cad a month. I know for fact Canada is no longer affordable place to live. Although I have a good job here, I am planning to move back to Turkiye for retirement.

Awesome you have free health insurance. For those seniors considering retiring to Asia always factor in $400 - $700/mo for FULL healthcare coverage vs. your home country's plan. (e.g. MediCare in the USA $185/mo).
