Why ride a recumbent trike? Is it better than a regular bike? In this recumbent trike review video we try to compare trikes vs bikes and address the main differences between riding a recumbent trike and a standard upright bike. We got our trikes last month due to decreasing mobility. Hubby (80) has ankle problems and I (74) have advancing arthritis. Our thoughts of the future were getting grim. Now we have the trike grin. In 6 weeks we have triked in 6 states and will soon add more. We are on a quest to discover new trails, and there are many! Our adventures are not narrowing each month, but expanding. Trikes have given us a new life; that's worth grinning about.

I was a bike rider for well over 50 years (including over 20 driving a motorcycle). A few years ago, balance became an issue. In looking for alternatives that would keep me riding on some kind of wheels, I found the tadpoles. TOTAL GAME CHANGER! Thanks for a fun video!

I have a similar story and my doctor in my PT office recommended that I get out and do more exercises while I'm not there. He put in to get a trike approved for me and I love it. It's not a top of the line but for now it's for my strength and stability until I can get 1 on my own. Good luck in your recovery and don't give up. I know that you might feel that way so that's why I mentioned it, so look for the things that you can "do" and accept the things that you no longer may not be able to do. Stay strong.

What I really like about the Trike is that I can take our three dogs for a trot around our neighborhood with it. I can't walk very far due to a spinal cord injury, but...I can ride the trike all day and the dogs love trotting beside me. I am at their level and they think I am part of the "pack" on the hunt ;-). I have not seen your previous videos, but please excuse me for any inconsiderations in my comments. Your video is helping me to make a decision trike or bike. Two points, beautiful children in trailer, but no lights? No little horn, especially when moving behind parked cars. No rear view mirrors to see traffic coming up behind you? Point #2, and my biggest consideration is exercising differently. My wife and I rented a 4 wheeler(Surrey). I ride a bike 10 miles or so 2-3 times per week. I assumed a 2 hour rental would be enjoyable for my wife and I. Wrong. One hour really worked my stomach and legs. I sweated like crazy. No rental second hour used. Next day I felt like I had never exercised before. I am 72 years of age and still think I am 32, but what a difference between a surrey 4 wheeler( position seems more recumbent oriented) and an upright bike. Whoa! Keep those vids coming.

Thank you for your comment! Since we made this video we have added some very good lights that we have all the time, and sometimes we also add little "blinkers" as additional lights as well. And we also added flags for better visibility. We actually have a little horn and a bell, as well as rearview mirrors - for me that is definitely a must-have! About excercising differently - I have to agree - it is very different than an upright bike, and you use different muscles. But as you excercise more, those muscles become stronger and you can surely do same distances on both, it is just a matter of habit I think.

Cool video! Getting older, I sometimes dread lifting my leg over the top tube to mount my touring bicycle. I prefer a U-frame commuter bike or just ride my footbike (Kickbike Safari) with no seat or chain to keep things super simple. Your comments about neck and back pain had me nodding in agreement. I suspect you will not change many minds, though, because trikes usually cost a lot more than bikes, and they are much harder to store inside and to transport in vehicles. Two wheeled riders and the makers of two wheelers are too entrenched to change, but I think many would think about it if they just took one short trike ride. Safe riding to you as always!

Thank you for your kind words! I have to agree, they are quite pricey, and it is one of the things why people don't consider them. I also agree that they are a bit bulky, not only for storing (which is definitely a valid point, especially for people who don't have a garage), but also for getting around town, sometimes the city bike lanes are quite narrow, and also if you need to leave the trike somewhere (for example if you're going shopping) it's a bit harder to find a place to lock it against. That's why we have our standard bikes as well, and we use what is more practical for a specific thing. As for transport, so far we just put the trikes in the back of our car, but then we can't take the kids with us, so we're still looking for a better solution that would allow us all to go together further from home. For next year we have some ideas for traveling (if the epidemic situation allows us), so we have to sort it out somehow 😀

@@bici.family I think you are having the same thoughts about trikes in Serbia that I am having in the USA. Our children are grown and have made us grandparents many times, but the logistics of having trikes are otherwise the same. Here, many former railroads have been converted to bike trails called rail-trails, so I am thinking of ways to get trikes to those trails. A small van with a trailer would be ideal for camping on longer trips. My dream would be crossing the USA and riding the rail-trails as much as possible on a planned cross country trail that's in its early stages now, called the "Great American Rail Trail". Closer to home, we have several rail trails, but again, getting trikes to them is not easy, so we ride our local roads, too. The main thing is, we both know the joy of riding trikes. I have heard about the rail trails in the USA, and they seem amazing to ride. And also such a cool project to reuse the old railroads! In Europe we have many cycling paths, but unfortunately not that many in Serbia. Actually there's only one fully cycling trail leading to/from our city, but hopefully that will improve, too.

I have a Trike now. I agree with most of what you said in the comparison, but wanted to note a couple of extra points. Although great on level ground and paths,Trikes are not good trying to ride sideways on a hill. The side tilt can flip them over. I tried it and did not like it. Really high speed turns can be a problem too. Also the real wheel does not have as much grip going up hill and can slip on gravel or grass. I changed my rear wheel to a mountain bike tire since I have a lot of hills on gravel paths. Finally you have to get used to the brakes being on the front wheels. You have to use both at once, and on hills and braking hard the trike can nose dive and the rear wheel comes up. These are just differences you have to be aware of and factor into your riding. By the way when I am riding on the road I usually wear a bright vest and put the flashing bike lights on the back. Nice video, and I really do like my recumbent trike.

Fabulous video! Regarding transporting a trike on a vehicle, its easier than a bicycle. I actually find my catrike easier to transport with my Hyundai Elantra or Toyota Rav4 than a bicycle because I don’t need a carrier rack. I lock the brakes of the front wheels of the trike. For the Elantra, I place a cedar board as a ramp on the trunk of the car, then, with the trike behind the Elantra, and the trike’s rear wheel closest to the ramp, I simply pick up the front wheels of the trike to then roll the rear trike wheel up the ramp onto the roof of the vehicle. So now the trike is sitting with its rear wheel on the front of the car roof, the trike’s front wheels are on the trunk. Then I simply tie it on with 2.5m ropes. For the Rav4 SUV, same thing but I c-clamp two boards together to have a longer ramp. Easier still, the entire trike can be fit entirely inside the SUV. I note that, before tying onto the vehicle roof, I place rags under the trike wheels to protect the vehicle’s paint. The board or two boards fit into either vehicle. Bonus, with a trike on the vehicle roof, my wife’s bicycle can be easily tied on, once again avoiding setting up a bicycle rack.

Great video with a lot of observed points all around. I have a Greenspeed trike, which I absolutely love. I think one of the things that people miss is how difficult it is to secure the trike on public streets. The design of certain trikes sometimes does not lend for the best locking mechanisms while some others do. How do you secure your trikes in public when you have to walk away from them for some time?

Thank you for your comment! Leaving a trike in a public place is not easy. A lot of standard bike stands (at least where we live) are too narrow, so you are not able to approach them with a trike to lock it. And even when you do find a place to lock your trike to, it's not so easy to attach it with a standard lock. We have ABUS chain locks, which are quite long, but even with them it is often hard to lock the trike to a bike stand. I also think that they draw too much attention (at least over here, the trikes are very rare), so all in all, we don't feel safe to leave the trikes on the streets, and we don't leave them unless we have to, and even then, only for the shortest possible time.

I’ve had a catrike for over a year. I have just added a pinion on the front and have E assist. It now has 324 gear options and with the e-assist it does well up hills with smooth shifting. I prefer it over my carbon Trek 5200 because as you say it’s more comfortable. I agree cars often give us a wider berth when they pass and I believe since there are far fewer of the trikes around, people notice them more simply because they are still a unique ride. They do seem to have some difficulty on uneven ground and can become unstable, so keeping the center of gravity low is very important as well as balancing the load with your body weight. I agree with your point that the trikes are so unique, here it's often the first time people see something like that, and sometimes they even stop to ask us what it is, and how it is to ride it - which might be a reason why they seem to be more friendly than when you are on a standard bike. As for the load balance - definitely something to take care of, I think nothing heavier should be mounted above your shoulder height.

@@wendywhite2642 I have since purchased a Greenspeed Aero, which has a lower center of gravity than the Catrike I have and the front tires lean in some adding to the stability. I’m 70, and fortunately still active playing Tennis, bikes, swimming etc. Actually looking at a Baron two wheel recumbent to help me maintain balance as I age. I had an assist on the Catrike, which died. The Pinion is a good option, which helps on those hills;thinking about one for the Aero. Thanks for your thoughts. Remember, you have to “walk the dog” weather you have one our not.

I just finished my first DIY recumbent bicycle! Never welded before and learned how to weld just trying for the first time and that´s it! Here in Brazil this bicycles and trikes are still much more unusual than in Europe and here are just two builders known, both handmade! For me, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. I usualy ride among 80 and 120km in one day and it´s unavoidable feel neck, arms, shoulders and low back pains! On a recumbent bicycle this pains just vanished! A prefered to do a recumbent bicycle than a trike because I choosed to be a litttle bit more fast, have just two tires to fix and use inclination to improve the turnings but I still want to build a recumbent trike too some day!😁

WIND !!! 🌬💨 (safety)(less drag/resistance) Is one of many reasons why I would choose taking out my recumbent trike over one of my bikes. The aerodynamics / design of a trike means worring about stablility in windy conditions is at a minimum. Side winds won't be blowing me about and i won't be fighting super hard against head winds getting nowhere, which is the downside to riding bikes where most energy will be lost battling the wind and the unseen danger at any second able to push you a foot or more out in the road, even lift you and the bike off the ground in certain conditions. Whenever a strong wind on a bike I'm usually thinking 1 of 3 things "geez i can hardly move forwards, any slower I'd be faster walking"😮 or "if that side gust was 10 secs ago, that car would have hit me as passed so close"😬 and finally "f*** me I'm flying, this is ace" 😅 Strong wind on trike I'm thinking "why am i not slowing down that much or blowing around 🤔, 😏 this is way easier than it should be...carry on...la de da de da" 😂 However It feels at times being lower down on the trike means i get more dust in my lungs and eyes, especially noticeable on dry windy days when following others on trials 😑😷 I also feel less benefit from tail/back winds, but tbh I don't feel I need them to begin with when using the trike 😂. Both have many pro's and cons, easy solution, own both if your able and choose what u feel would suit best for that day ❤

The first time out on my New Catrike Dumont I had to go to a bike shop and buy a new tire and inner tube that was much more aggressive than the original slick tire. I got off the trail to do something and just sat and spun my rear tire, had to get up and push it back onto the bike walking path.

When going under road barriers, be careful not to forget your flag 11:25. I didn't notice my flag missing until much later. I ride my trike everyday. I still ride my regular bike once in a while. I go faster on my regular bike but it is more work and more like exercise. The trike is more relaxing and fun. The trike grin is better.

Great video - on single Lanes I would not ride on them if possible . Especially when there is no Shoulder, Cars passing you have to Go into the oncoming Traffic. 😳 Also it would be good to have a Loud Air Horn - Attached Close by . To Warn A Vehicle 🚗 Backing up .

New can be intimidating in price but try one out for a decent 10 mile ride and see how it feels. Someone, somewhere, has one for rental without an electric assist . I bought mine used and in need of minor repairs . It is a Terratrike Path 3 speed internal hub or at least it was. I changed the gearing to a 20 speed setup , replaced the brass bushings ( yup 2007 model!) and put a rack on it. 500.00 Canadian to buy it and 150-200 bucks to upgrade it. Facebook marketplace has a lot of E trikes in the range of 5-9000.00 used! Just what is your health worth?

When I tried a Hase Trigo recently, i loved it but on a steep slope I found the front wheel just kept slipping to the leftside when i exerted a lot off effort. There wasnt a camber on the path o was using but the harder I tried the more it slipped.

I don't know about Hase Trigo, it is a "delta" model, while our Stinetrikes Wild Ones are "tadpoles" so I guess they behave differently because of different geometry...

Nice video on the ins and outs of a trike. I hear that losing traction on the rear tire can cause problems, which is on reason why i have not bought one yet. On a steep dirt hill you will loose traction and come to a full stop on a trike. I know this from experience. Another hazard is riding on a steep side slope. You can roll over. I've done that too! I've come to the conclusion that the trike is best on paved roads and dirt roads, but not so much on mountain bike trails. That said, I love my Catrike. At 67 years old I did a loaded cross country trip where I experienced all kinds of roads and traffic situations and almost always felt safe and comfortable. And the view from the seat is wonderful. Your head is up and looking around instead of being hunched over looking at the ground ten feet ahead.

@@tomiday66 Thanks for your insight. I have mobility issues, so a trike does look interesting. I have been riding an ebike [5300 miles] , I am not sure I can handle a trike without electric assist. You think regular trikes are expensive, try looking at one with assist, yikes. I do ride some trails, so my fat tire ebike would probably be better suited for that. But a trike on the road looks very tempting.

Rear wheel can lose traction sometimes, but for us it has happened only a few times - on very bad dirt roads, and in the autumn when riding uphill over wet fallen leaves. The main reason is probably that the rear wheel doesn't have enough weight on it, due to the geometry of the trike, unlike an upright bike where the rear wheel takes more of the rider's weight. If you like to ride MTB trails and dirt trails, there are also trikes with fat tires, which might be what you're looking for. I think even without fat tires, if you take any off-road tires you probably wouldn't have any issues with losing traction.

I have an electric assisted recumbent trike. I love it. My only complaint is a much wider turn radius. Some trails come out at a 90* angle to a sidewalk and it can be difficult to make that corner. Other than that, being lower you need to be visible. Have a flag and lights.

The title made me think it was going to compare recumbent bikes to recumbent trikes. I was curious because when I first started riding recumbents, bikes were the big sellers and now it's trikes that are the big sellers. I've never been able to figure out why.

I have an electric bike, recumbent bike and a trike, my impression is that even though you go much slower you seem to be able to go further without too much stress. My wrists get stressed on the recumbent and on the bike my bottom as well. However it’s a trade off on a bike you can definitely go much faster and climbing hills up until it is very steep is easier. So the trip is quicker. I always wear fluorescent clothes and have flashing lights operating in daylight. I have plenty of experience on motor bikes where fluorescent tops make a difference. You can even add a flashing light to your flag pole.

Riding a TerraTrike All Terrain for the last 6 months and The wider tires get me through unpaved trails safely and; since adding torque-sense E-assist I am able to tackle steeper trails. For safety at intersections I have added side-facing, orange, blinking LED Lights on each steering post. This saved me from a careless driver near dusk one evening! Having been a motor cycle rider in my 20’s, I had a few crashes, so now I have some broken knee and elbow bones. Recumbent trike gut me back in the road! I Hope more folks read your helpful articles!

The best way to walk your Trike is to pull it from the rear wheel and the front wheels trailing. Much easier. Your not required to have lights and or Flags on your Trike? That way you stand out more.

Nice video. My full suspension electric trike can go 45mph and has a Rholoff hub and fat tires, so it all depends on the trike as to your speed and off road ability and comfort. As for safety, I have a battery pack that is rechargeable that I plug in an emergency type light bar with 46 halogen lights that flash at night or day for that matter and it makes people take a lot of caution when reading near me.

I kod nas ih je relativno malo, ljudi nisu upoznati sa trajkovima, i nas kad vide uvek bude puno komentara i pitanja. Mi smo iz Novog Sada, sem nas znamo za još 3 trajkera (ako se tako kaže 🤔 ), na ovoliki grad, u kom je pritom biciklistički saobraćaj na relativno visokom nivou za ove prostore, to je ipak jako malo.

@@bici.family U početku za mene su mislili da sam invalid😁😁😁. Svi se makivali. Ja volim prirodu i mogu reći da su se tu pokazali daleko udobniji. Prava uživanja naspram običnog bicikla. Vidio sam da za one koji vole brzinu i cestu tu su velomobili. Da su skupi jesu, ali brate kad mi neko kaže da je dao 4000 eura za obični bicikl, a na njemu samo sic, rama i kotači onda ni tricikli ni, quadovi ,oklopljeni ili ne stvarno nisu skupi, a daju puno više. Udobnost, stabilnost, tonu zabave i još puno toga. Evo dosta da ne gnjavim više. Inače ja sam iz okolice Kalnika kod Križevca.

Vidim da se slažemo po stavovima. I mi iskreno najveću prednost vidimo kod putovanja - neverovatno su udobni, i čovek se ne umori toliko kao sedeći na standardnom biciklu. A što se tiče brzine - nismo trkači, tako da nam zapravo taj deo i ne smeta. Svakako putujemo natenane. Ko zna, možda nekad budemo išli i u vašem pravcu pa se i sretnemo :)

They are dangerous around high riding trucks which are quite common these days. Even with high riding flags they can easily be missed by vehicles and you can get run over when they turn and don't see you because you are sitting very very low.

Nice video. I am a trike enthusiast myself. However, it is somewhat misleading to say that a recumbent trike is "more stable" than a 2-wheel bike. This isn't always the case. Rather, it depends on how you ride it. Two times to be careful. One, past 18mph or so a trike is definitely not more stable than a 2-wheeler. A slight wobble from a bump or foreign object in the path can lead to a loss of control and a disastrous fall. So keeping it under 18mph can be important, but is sometimes hard to resist when having fun time flying downhill. Two, a trike's cornering abilities are absolutely terrible and you really have to slow down. I've rolled on my trike a couple of times trying to take tight turns, even while leaning in to compensate.

Thank you for the comment! I guess we never ride that fast, and so far we haven't had any situation where we were anywhere near tipping over. I'm not sure if the suspension system takes a part in stability, because it can take in some of the stress when hitting a bump? But this is definitely something to have in mind, thank you for pointing it out.

The key to tight fast turns on a trike is to brake with only the outside hand. Leave the inside brake alone! In other words, when turning right, brake with the left hand. It took me a while to learn this, but now I find the trike just locks into the turn and there is no tendency to tip. Try it. It will surprise you how stable the trike feels. I am curious to know what type of trike you are riding. I often exceed 20 or even 30 mph on my Catrike and it is quite steady.

@@tomiday66 It does seem to help to brake with the outside hand only. Of course, I don't know if I was going as fast as I was when I flipped over those couple of times. I have a Performer JC-70. When the road is flat and smooth, there isn't much problem with stability, even at 25MPH. However, if there is a rock, walnut, buckeye, stick, or whatever in the road and it hits your back wheel so as to push it sideways a little, then you have to compensate for the shimmy it will create. I haven't lost control of the bike in such instances...yet. But it really feels like I could lose control if I don't react quickly and correctly.

@@danielslilaty Hi Daniel, you may want to check with the manufacturer or dealer about that shimmy. It should not happen. I regularly go over 30 MPH on down hills on my Catrike without problem. In over 3,000 miles I have never experienced shimmy, even fully loaded on a cross country trip in some scary mountains.

I love my recumbent trike, but moving it upstairs, riding by train, transporting it inside a small car or going long ways up the hill is a pain or almost impossible. Breaking with the back wheel can cause serious trouble because you easily loose contact to the ground which makes you instant turn over and serious accident. Also when somethings break with the front steering or just a loosing air and not having repair tools makes a heavy trike a nightmare.

I agree with you, it definitely has its downsides, they are heavy and bulky, they are sometimes slower and need more pushing from the legs, etc. But for us there are more pros to riding a trike than cons. 😊

Actually it depends a lot on the geometry and the components used. There are many different trikes, some are made specifically for speed and are often faster even than road bikes (you can find videos where a trike rider is faster than the Tour de France riders), but ours are rather made for touring - to be comfortable and stable, but are somewhat slower than our upright bikes.

Rolling resistance is insignificant in comparison to wind resistance, which is significantly lower on a trike. A trike is faster than sitting upright on a bike. This is basic fact of aerodynamics.

Trikes are actually faster (if you have enought gearing) You have lower drag on a trike. There are regular people on trikes that can keep up awith tour de france cyclists with no problem. They even ride faster than them.

Thank you for your comment! Now that you say that, I remember seeing a video of a trike rider "racing" along with the TDF peloton, and keeping up with them! I guess it really depends on the gear setup, wheel size, seat angle, and of course the rider. This is just our experience so far - in our touring setup, on trikes we are a bit slower, but then again for us, it really doesn't matter, we don't do it for speed but to enjoy the ride 😊 All the best!

You pull the Trike instead of pushing it. You pick up the rear by the luggage rack and pull it backwards, this is the easiest and safest way.

Recumbents being so low to the ground are dangerous for city riding. Vehicles can’t see you. Also when you come to a stop you have to downshift drastically. If you neglect to , it’s very difficult to start up again in the same gear you stopped at. But they are great for trail riding.

Even regular bikes are being run over by distracted drivers, so many times I wish these cellphones were never invented. I bet I see 49 out of 50 on the darn cellphone while driving. Now with the defund the police even more people think they can get away with it. So it's a toss up but by making yourself and bike or Trike more visible with flags and lights along with bright colors both on you and your vehicle you should be safer also, I went with an electronic Horn thats very loud, I have the clicker bell but the Electric one for traffic.

@@bici.family I don't like Trikes on narrow UK roads for their width and the fact that they are very low.Also in some countries they have severe cambers on their roads which would be difficult for trike riding but at least you can rest uphill with a trike.
