Don was there for the Thanksgiving special, when Rigby's dad opens the door you can see him, so that can't be right. I think the reason why Rigby's dad is the was he is that episode is just like the song said "for one day a year all is forgiven". So Rigby's mom problem convinced the dad to let go of his grudge just for that one day, this is what most likely happened.

That actually makes sense and does fit with Don’s character, but one thing Don is the little brother. The episode when we got to meet Don, Rigby said it in the end when he broke down because he felt like he was always in his shadow even tho he looked up to Rigby basically all his life.

This was fun to listen to but as others have mentioned, Don was there at the party so this can’t be the case, I think the out of universe explanation is just that they retconned rigby’s dad to being different later, as for an in universe explanation I don’t think there’s enough to make a good explanation that holds up

Like some dads, rigbys dad couldve just gotten harder on Rigby and as he grew up, his dad got more and more sad that rigby wasnt his little boy anymore and was too much for him, so he became meaner as an effect of it.

I have my own theory (more like head-cannon) I think Rigby's Dad 1 is his biological dad, while 2 is his stepdad. In the episode Rigby tries to take Eileen to prom its shown that Rigby's Dad 2 hates him but loves Don. And in the Thanksgiving episode, Thomas/Nikolai was tasked to pickup the parents from the plane (meaning his Dad 1 doesn't live in the same state or country as Rigby). But, the prom episode Rigby and Don were able to go to their parents' house for dinner to ask if they could borrow the car. (Something nearly impossible to do if they live in another country). What I think happen is that Rigby's mom and Dad 1 had him, but they spilt up when he was a baby and Dad 1 decides to move away (thus why we only see him at Thanksgiving, its a once a year event). Then the mom and Stepdad start dating and have Don. Thus explaing why Dad 2 hated Rigby, for not being his real son and a reminded of Rigby's mom previous relationship. And in turn explain why Rigby hated Don for being a reminder of the man that replaced his real dad. TLDR: Dad one was the OG dad, a break up/divorced occured and Dad 2 and Don entered Rigby's life. Also in the episode Don, Rigby states that he was the older Bro not Don. Added this incase anyone was confused.
