Your explanations were great. The use of TotalMix goes exactly as you described it, and that took me a while to learn. The software section can do the route reassignments, as this is set up in the DAW, so I wonder if you have an aversion to setting up your DAW session with the channels routed where you want them. I know input monitoring is more precise and latency free, and that’s why most people are adamant about working from inputs. But I do almost everything in the DAW anyway. So my channels are moved side by side, although the inputs are coming from all over the place. I don’t have clients to cater to, and I have a much smaller total channel count from a Fire face UC and UFX, the original editions. No need to send submixes to various headphones. No room correction going on. No ProTools either, it’s FL Studio that does my I/O. So for my much more simplistic needs, my only complaint is keeping the WDM, and Windows to use my Speakers as the default audio channel. Many times Windows boots up with no sound, because the speakers are suddenly assigned to a different channel. That’s it for me. 💪😜

@@jimshomestudio thanks, and thanks for watching! Yeah for me input monitoring is crucial for me, I don't monitor in pro tools at all, I do all my control cue monitoring in totalmix and same for headphone submixes. So it's a bit of a nightmare as I'm dealing with up to 20 simultaneous mics a lot of the time and multiple headphone mixes. I love the way totalmix handles monitoring and submixes but it's massively let down by the lack of channel reordering, I find it a huge failure of the software. The only solution really is patch bays, but currently not all my preamps run through patchbays, and it just seems dumb when totalmix is otherwise perfectly capable.

@@jimshomestudio agree with how it manages audio in windows too, although I don't have too much issue with it switching output (only happens very occasionally for me.) One thing I find annoying is I have to remember to switch my ufx iii on first before my pc - otherwise windows won't see it and I have to shut down and reboot my pc (restart won't work.)

All good points. I’m trying get mine up and running and I’ve been on the verge of sending it back a few times. UAD doesn’t have the connectivity I was looking for and I don’t really need all the plugins, but I may still change. The RME hardware is great and sounds good. TotalMix FX is horrid. 90% of the stuff they tout and keep repeating in their “instructional” videos are useless for most users/musicians. I have no use for all those routing options (certainly on a device that only has one headphone output to begin with). Utterly confusing and essential features are hidden and hard to decipher. I hope they fix it one day. And yes, it doesn’t even fit the screen of a MacBook.

@@swampscott2670 sorry to hear you've had a bad time with totalmix FX! It is the most comprehensive and well built software mixer I've ever seen for an interface - it is basically a full digital mixing console in software form. But I would agree the UI is not particularly intuitive. It really needs a redesign. From the sounds of it though you don't necessarily need it - there is a 'DAW mode' in the totalmix FX options that basically bypasses totalmix so you don't have to use it, if you weren't aware.

@@TheBunkhouseStudiosthanks. Yes, I found the “DAW mode” - only to discover that it mutes the headphones out (until you route it in the DAW) and eliminates the low-latency tracking. I got yelled at on the RME forum for even trying it…I’ll be spending another weekend trying to set it up in a meaningful way and then decide if it goes back in exchange for an Apollo. The RME hardware makes more sense for me - but the software is a nightmare specifically because it’s set up like a full mixer (which regular musicians have no use for I guess when using at home to record and write).
@TheBunkhouseStudios3 күн бұрын
@swampscott2670 yeah it will do that as your DAW takes over all the routing. The RME forum I find is pretty toxic and I think RME need to sort it out as it's bad for their public image imo. It's not just community members on their but actual RME staff on there are incredibly rude and self righteous. God forbid if you have any issues or anything you don't like about their products! To be honest if all you need is zero latency monitoring you can ignore almost everything in totalmix and hardly have to interact with it at all. Just select your headphone output in totalmix, send whatever inputs at whatever level you need to your headphones and then you're done. If you largely record the same instruments and mics etc you could likely just set up a template with set and forget headphone levels. There is an option somewhere in the settings where you can hide channels from view so you can hide any ins and out you don't need to see and hide all the loopback (software playback) channels.

@@swampscott2670 you probably won't have much of an easier time with Apollo either for zero latency tracking with UAD you have to use their console software for setting headphone levels etc, similar to totalmix fx

@@TheBunkhouseStudiosthanks. Yeah, I’ll just have to muddle through. It’s been more frustrating than inspiring so far but then again it’s just an interface. I agree that it probably is a cultural issue. I’m originally from Germany and after 25 years in the US am very aware of the differences in culture and communication - even at the business/customer level. They do what they do well. And that doesn’t include writing user friendly software, communicating with clients and positive marketing. It’s no different really with my BMW and my Leica when it comes to apps and software 😂. Just hope they survive and that their sales are decent. Great to have aeons of “driver support” (I’m on Mac and since I switched the term driver never even crossed my mind…) - but then you go out of business because your core audience abroad can’t handle your abrasive behavior… But hey, the thing is actually made in Germany and not in China like the Apollos. Seriously a reason for me to stick it out.

I'd much rather deal with the actual developers being cold (or simply just not explaining ad nauseum why certain things aren't possible or will take years to rewrite) than deal with talking heads that just yes you to death and not follow through. If you can't handle the realness, then pick up the phone and call Synthax Audio and speak to a support person there. Otherwise, great video - the title alone is enough to perpetuate a false belief that TotalMix is bad. 👏

@@Blewis-Diarrheo the video title is really just playing part of the KZbin game, especially for a small channel like mine. It's a balancing act between clickbait and trying to hook people in. I try not to be too clickbaity. Overall I think totalmix is very good, and there's nothing else quite like it on the market imo. But I do find it falls frustratingly short in the areas mentioned in the video, many of which at least to the average user seem fixable. The channel reordering thing is a huge one for me and just seems a bit daft that they won't address it. I see where you're coming from regarding RME support, but personally I don't see it as 'realness' - moreso a lack of customer service skills. Synthax are great but they have no hand in totalmix development! Thanks for watching the video and appreciate your comments ❤️
