This video tackles Nickelodeon's Rocket Power & its connection with 90s and 2000s extreme sports and punk culture. The show tied in historic moments like Tony Hawk's 900 and the popularity of zines as society approached Y2K.

Speaking as a girl (millennial) I didn't love or hate rocket power. It was ok to watch but I also didn't think it was all that great neither. I was riding my bike, skateboarding, & shooting hoops (basketball) long before the cartoon all through out the 90's. Plus knowing the show is based off California which is literally on the other side of the country from where I live it was hard to relate especially when they talking about surfing, board walks etc. For me it was more fantasy than reality. I'm sure kids who lived in California at the time could relate better to this show but for everyone else not so much. 🤷‍♀️✌️

Despite being rebellious, Otto and company always wear their helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads. "Push it to the limit but don't be an idiot." Same with how a lot of adults on the show were reasonable authority figures.

@@keeperofthetale Indeed. Ray and Tito (and Conroy when he became a teacher), while they had rules and boundaries, were always happy to let the kids do their own thing. Violation of the rules usually led to natural consequences. Even killjoys like Merv Stimpleton had their moments, like where Otto had to be his caddy and the two formed a bond, Merv learning to be more aggressive and Otto learning to be more patient.

Rocket Power was one of my favorite shows in the early 2000's. Reggie was was (still is) my favorite character followed by Squid. I learned how to rollerblade after begging my parents for a pair and it was probably the only reason I went outside as a child.

Were you doing aggressive inline? I could skate pretty well in regular skates, but trying tricks in aggressive inlines just wasn’t for me haha.

@keeperofthetale Anything that involved wheels off the ground was terrifying for me, but I would jump the steps at our middle school just enough to elicit some 'sick jumps whoa' from the other kids lol. I also liked to race on them and almost joined roller derby because I could get rather aggressive. Ahhhh those were the days 🛼

Something I liked about this show was that the adults weren't losers or out of touch, but they were pretty cool and reliable. I think this studio tended to nail it with the adult characters in a lot of their shows. As Told By Ginger and especially Rugrats also had really relatable adult figures.

Hot Take: Rocket Power probably at one point was supposed to take place in New Jersey. They mention shoobies and mischief night in various episodes, which are New Jersey terms, not California terms. Furthermore, the N on Sam Dullard's shirt stands for New York, where Sam was originally supposed to be from rather than Kansas. That and in South Jersey, there are quite a few beach towns that have carnivals on piers, the most notable one being Wildwood.

Dude, thank you for this. You really hit the nail on the head when you called it a Period Piece. I can't even say Rocket Power defined my childhood, I caught so little of it, but I ADORED the the aesthetics of the late 90s/early 20s. There is a curious mix of optimism and rebellion that made it incredibly interesting. Surge, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Punk Music, Jet Set Radio, etc freaking called to me. The value of authenticity and living life (even if I did mine through vidja games half the time. :D) really sang to us teens that were just figuring out our shite. My friend, Chris D, would do some funny to idiotic stuff, including shaking expired soda cans and smacking em with a rubber mallet (came apart at the SEAMS in some cases) and jumping over a pool...which resulted in a phone call to mummy dearest and a scar I still have. XD TLDR: GREAT video, cool collab, and neat framing of it and its concepts.
