the first 2 ones against animals is all the more reason people push for veganism, and it just extends past that in the last 2 to people as well! Violence is what we thought of is atrocicious in the 90s - that if we can handle everything diplomatically - life could be better.

I don't understand what makes you say Doug was set in the 1960's? I've never seen any reference to this before, and can't even find anything to verify it now. I've always thought of the show as contemporary to the time it came out (early 1990's), while trying to remain timeless by not mentioning anything too topical or tied to any particular time. I was about 12 when the show first started airing in the early 90's. The show featured computers, video games, etc. None of which existed in the 1960's. Maybe you mean it's setting was based on how Lakeside was in the 1960's?
@keeperofthetale2 ай бұрын
Their are some links in the description, but Jim has said the show is based on his life growing up in the 60s in Richmond and he’s personally said it was how he saw the area and life during that time. How you would like to interpret that is up to you, but I interpreted it literally and assumed that a cartoon on a floating timeline will eventually have current day references. I never assumed he meant it was hard coded as the 60s like they would do for a historic movie though so maybe that’s a point we can agree on.
@marcberm2 ай бұрын
@@keeperofthetale I tend to think of the time setting and location setting as distinctly separate things that are not always in agreement in any given film or television show. There is a discernable trend of 1950-60's themes in kid's television from the 80's and 90's, largely because the Baby Boomers who were developing and writing those shows at that time were drawing from their own experiences as children (which happened to be during the 50's and 60's). Another prominent example is Saved by the Bell. I mean the retro diner style malt shop where all the high school kids hung out, etc was definitely not an idea contemporary to the 80's/90's. I tend to think that Doug is the same way. The timeline was intended to be contemporary to the 90's, even if it did include cultural references to decades earlier... Again with the retro drive-in style Honker Burger, the "Beets" as a parallel to the Beatles, and etc.

Well for starters, the worst father in regular show is rigby's but that's another topic. Muscle Dad though he only lied about his profession and given how kids are maybe was for the best. Though I think he was a trucker at one point and had to downgrade at some point, because of his character. Muscle Bro must also knew the whole truth since he became a trucker and must have learned about his dad. But as the story implies, they never had a falling out.

I remember finding this song on youtube when I was like 13 and relating it to the boy I liked at the time, my first “real crush” I never would’ve thought I’d find it again in a video essay about daria which I watched as a young teen as well because I was told by so many people I remind them of her. lol

Whats the source that Doug is supposed to be set in the 1960s? The show has never read anything but contemporary to the 1990s to me - in particular showing Doug obsessed with his Super Pretendo (obviously a play on the SNES). Would love a citation on this.
@keeperofthetale2 ай бұрын
Yea no problem. My sources are from lots of Jim Jinkins interviews and behind the scenes. He’s stated the show was based on his childhood growing up in the 60s. Come back here later today around 9 or 10 pm tonight and I’ll have the sources cited in the description. Sorry I cant do it earlier, I’m at work and have plans for my birthday tonight! Thanks for watching! Edit: but to add, yea there are elements in the show that are pop culture references to the 90s like the SNES. Kind of just how cartoons are. I think it’s more just a small instance theu used to relate/ poke at the current times of the home console boom.

Thanks for making this video. As a huge Doug fan and Richmond resident it's cool to see all the local places that inspired the show. But I always believed Honker Burger was based off of Roys Big Burger which is located in Lakeside and has a drive up feel like Honker.
@keeperofthetale3 ай бұрын
Right!?! You’d think Roy’s would HAVE to be the spot, since it’s literally a bike ride away from Valentine Hills. But yea, Honker Burger being based on Kelly’s come strictly from Jim Jinkins himself. There’s a video interview out there, but you can also read his print interview here: www.styleweekly.com/toon-town/ I actually went to Roy’s as well when creating this video. It indeed is an uncanny resemblance/vibe lol

Another like for your video - which I found after searching for bears. Yesterday, 14 Aug 2024, I was experimenting with a motorcycle ride along the back roads of Central Florida. I keep an eye out for wildlife on the road, but low and behold, a sizeable bear ran across the road in front of me... broad daylight, unexpected. The great thing was that I got to see the bear, noticed it out of the corner of my eye, and could slow down enough to not endanger the bear, and the road crossing was successful. I liked your discussions about the beginnings of Yogi Bear... and I found it interesting that my looking for something about bears brought your video my way... funny how that happens!

I admit I watched Daria Late, I was in college. Sometime I wish I watched it back in highschool, it might have help on some situations lol Trent was a great character. I remember that he was aware of Daria crush, but he never did nothing to Daria and that was great! He was on a different life level of Daria, even if he still thought as a teen - He was aware, was respectful of it and he didn't make fun of Daria for having a crush or anything, he's been very chill and understable seeing her as a friend, hell, if not like a second young sister like Jane. His relationship with Daria was strictly friendship and could have not work more than that. Also, off-topic, Trent might have around others girls crushing on him (I'm not very aware of the idea of grunge bands in the '90). He was in a band and doing gig, Mystic spiral fans might be late teen -18 and 19- to early '20 and might been some early teen into alternative music. The thing is: he was aware of teens crush, he literally had two olders sisters and Jane. He's anti-conformist, not a creep lol On the Daria side I admit that the crush things was very well done, it was not the stereotypical "blubby pinkish rose and flowers" situation or stalking type of situation too as it was more grounded. Daria had a crush, she had anxiety and still acted as "herself", no weird 360 character change or weird ass second embarassment situations: the situation was just embarassing for Daria herself. There was the weird feeling of crushing but deepdown knowing that things were not going to work, but still there was a crush and the doubt etc. And the thing evolved, Daria got out of the crush as she grow up, and being generally herself, that is something I love about this show.

It's nice to think about all the positive messages in cartoons, at least, older cartoons. On a sidenote, I don't think I could ever feel comfortable watching a swimsuit competition with children; the implication just seems too big and gross.
