You know the best part of the Rose/Fin casino arch was? The part where they "save" the space horses (that are going to be recaptured anyways) but not the enslaved children. Now those children will face extra punishment for aiding in the their escape.

Your right. I couldn't remember that over luke drinking green tity milk and attempting to murder his nephew. I'm afraid there are too many flaws in this film for a mere mortal like me to absorb all at once. The last jedi has broken me. lol

haha andre. It did that to seasoned SW critics/fans. Nearly all of them praised the movie too hastily, before all the wrongs really sank in. There was just too much of it.

It's so disconnected from the situation, i get the sentiment behind it but you'd think that would mean giving your life to save everyone but nope! It's even weirder when you take Holdo's own sacrifice into account, she rams a ship into a fleet and destroys like 90% of it kills a bunch of people and it's a sad moment of sacrifice, Finn tries to destroy the cannon, not kill everyone around it mind you just break the cannon, and it's him trying to win by "Killing what you hate silly". It's all so disconnected from everything else.

Wrong! Rose did a ton! Through her actions, the rebel (sorry, resistance) transports were discovered and destroyed, she prevented her beloved Finn from saving the day thereby killing Luke, she celebrated the freeing of some stupid animals even though the enslaved children caring for them were most likely killed, and she sexually assaulted a minority after she had just witnessed countless deaths over the previous several hours. Rose did so much!

Her sister gave her life to release a fuck ton of bombs on their enemies, probably with Rose’s well-being in mind. Sometimes, you do have to fight and kill your enemies *in order* to save what you love. This whole film was just ... confused. It wanted to make high-brow points but lacked the intelligence to do so.

The scene when Finn was flying into sacrifice himself at the point when Finn shuts off his headset as they were pleading with him not to sacrifice himself was really good and intense then it was ruined when Rose crashed into Finn.
@samiamtheman73796 жыл бұрын
What was also stupid about that is if you know anything about how crashes work, crashing into Finn from the side most likely would have killed Finn anyway if not both of them, yet somehow Finn is fine and Rose goes unconscious. So in addition to not knowing how space works, Rian Johnson also doesn't know how vehicle crashes work.

I agree with you. I was sitting in the theater watching that scene and I was thinking the whole time it was playing out, “oh my gosh he’s going to do it, this is it.” Then rose comes in and “saves the day”. Now I love Finn, he was my favorite character in TFA, and as much as I didn’t want him to die in that moment it would have been much more powerful if Rose would have just let him sacrifice himself. Or better yet, Rose could have been the one to do it.
@mightyambassador41896 жыл бұрын
Lol same here. When I was watching in the theater my reaction when Rose "saved" Finn was a silent "ohhh nooo" with a facepalm.

Oi same here! Granted, I wanted more meaningful time with Finn because I genuinely like his character more than most of the other characters in the series but I knew the SECOND that he took off the headset that THIS was the best way for him to go. I was so happy that he was getting some REALLY MEANINGFUL character development. I was kinda sad too but ultimately ECSTATIC! BUT NOOOOOOO! Rose HAD to intervene! AND FOR NO REASON! I dunno what the future holds for any character now. This movie failed to really develop any of them. It's really sad.

Neocereus SHOTS FIRED. I agree, though. They have zero chemistry. That was such an awkward, emotionless kiss. Finn and Rey were adorable on camera together in TFA. Their friendship was one of the most enjoyable in Episode XII, and one of my favorite aspects of Finn’s character was his commitment to save this one person with whom he has a connection instead of jumping without question into the Resistance ... I mean, Rebels? That’s an incredibly relatable, endearing kind of heroism. He had so much potential as a character.

What I found very irritating was the scene where Rose told Finn about the animals and children and how she experienced this bad things in her childhood and he feels bad for her and the audience is supposed to feel bad for her, but I was like: Wait a second, wasn't Finn the one who got kidnaped from his family when he was a child, to serve under the first order? He doesnt need someone explaining to him, that there are bad things in the world. I feel like they could've had a really meaningfull conversation there, but they decided to set Finn up as this comedic dump character, that serves as a way for Rose to explain shit. Hell no.

Normally I would agree, but I feel like it would have made such a huge universe (Er, Galaxy), smaller than it really is. Adding new characters and planets to flesh out a Fiction that’s been stripped away of all of its expanded universe, I think, is a better move. While I really like Lando, it would have been a bit bland and predictable if everyone happened to know one another. I personally don’t want to sit through another “hey it’s you again” scene.

Yeah I got pissed off in the theater when they actually left the whole conflict at hand to get the “Master Code Breaker.” It sounded like a quest. Like, I really thought they were doing a KOTOR sidequest. A hologram sends them to an irrelevant planet to fetch a character unrelated to the plot, to get a code that didn’t end up helping the story anyway.

@@alexandergreene461 Funnily enough what TLJ did directly contradicts what they shower in TFA. In TFA they infiltrated Starkiller by coming out of hyper between the planetary shield and Starkiller. This shows that matter in hyper and matter in normal space don't interact, otherwise the Falcon would have been smashed against the shield so Abrams was operating more or less by the old lore rules.

This is how you fix Rose: delete her from the movie. She only exists so a female character could have a role in Finn's shenanigans and take a heroic part in the climax by saving Finn. That's it. She didn't need to be there while Poe literally just sits around the whole time. Make Finn - the former Stormtrooper - the codebreaker, and have him join Poe on a quest into the First Order ship. That dynamic is what was already established. It makes no sense to disrupt it so a new and needless character could take the spotlight *just* because they wanted a female character to be involved. If you want to give female character role of prominence, you have to write them into the story, not just drop them in and forget everything that was already set up. That's bad writing.

Kylo is not a Sith neither is Snoke. Kylo was not "trained" - in TFA Snoke says he has to COMPLETE his training. Rey is not good at everything. She is tricked by Ren. She also is seduced by the dark side too quickly and Luke has to pull her back. Rose forces Finn to take the ideals of the resistance seriously. Spending time on planets with alien cultures is in ALL SW films (Solo, Phantom, Empire, ROTJ) - in Phantom because of fuel Jinn finds Anakin, the chosen one. In Last Jedi because of fuel, the rebels need to go to Crait where Luke shows up to save them. What don't you understand?
@darkthorpocomicknight78914 жыл бұрын
@Gaius Wyrden Jedi could ALWAYS do that. In Rogue 1, Vader is in open space. Maul throws a force user into space and he lives. Breathing in space is not hard for Jedi. People can fly (really float) in space easily - as long as there is no counterforce they can move quickly to something - basic physics. Any other questions??

eshaw2115 He spends most of TFA following Rey. His character was poorly written from the start.
@arichutfles6 жыл бұрын
If you analyse the story of TFA, all the major plot points revolve around a decision made by Finn. Finn is the main character of that movie.
@99batran6 жыл бұрын
I think Rey was supposed to be a bit "blank" so the audience could 'project' themselves onto her. It's common for stories to do that to protagonists.
@arichutfles6 жыл бұрын
99batran Main characters can, and often are, rather blank in the personality department so that the audience can "pour themselves" into the role. However, the protagonist is the character who makes the pivotal decisions at each major plot point. Rey has little say in most of these major turning points of both Force Awakens and Last Jedi. Finn and Luke, respectively, make most of the major decisions in the two movies with Rey either reacting to those decisions or simply being swept along by the plot.

That and Klyo who is meant to be the big bad as far as we know is still the same power level while Rey has only gotten stronger. Making him seem like a lack of any true threat, given his only victories have been against people who can't defend theirselves. Out side of Finn i should add.
@arichutfles6 жыл бұрын
This trilogy should have been cementing the Skywalker story. It should have been Luke rebuilding the Jedi order and the Imperial Remnant (who take the name "The First Order") trying to kill it off again, not that they already did. That way you don't invalidate the previous two trilogies. Then, in the next trilogy you can do the "anybody can be a Jedi" story. Set it a thousand years after the OT or in an alternate universe. But Carrie Fisher is dead and they'll probably never get Harrison Ford to do another movie so the opportunity do a proper sequel to the OT is gone. I no longer care about ep9 or anything else Disney is doing with Star Wars.

Snoke is neutral. Would he be a good villain? I don't know - people are split. It doesn't make TLJ bad. Also Snoke was in SEVERAL scenes in TFA. Adding all scenes in TFA plus TLJ we get five or six scenes not two. Finally Snoke's death just mirrors Palps. Luke Skywalker: Your overconfidence is your weakness. Now here's Snoke: Snoke : You think you can turn him. Pathetic child. I cannot be betrayed. I cannot be beaten. Sounds overconfident to me.

This is not a bad movie but it has too many flaws to make sense and it doesn’t deserve the critical acclaim. If this had a 60% on rotten tomatoes, I’d be less whiny.

@thebatman88156 жыл бұрын
Caleb Carrigan The prequels didn't take a shit on everything great about about Star Wars? Yeah, it's not like they turned Darth Vader (one of the most beloved movie characters of all time) into a whiny little brat who creeps on women. It's not like they turned the force (which used to be a mysterious and epic power) into a bunch of microscopic organisms that live on your body. It's not like they turned Yoda from a wise and interesting character to a boring cgi flipping mess. It's not like they made the Jedi a weird, boring priest like organization that was doomed to fail. It's not like they made lightsaber fights overly choreographed dances that never felt real. Oh wait, the prequels did do all of that, and so much more. I did not like The Last Jedi at all, but Leia flying through space and Rose as a character are NO WHERE NEAR AS BAD as what the prequels did to Star Wars. And The Force Awakens was a decent return to form, providing the great new character of Kylo Ren and giving Han a fitting death.

I don't think she will kill Kylo. Obiwan didn't kill Anakin and Luke didn't kill Vader, so I doubt Rey who is shown to be more of a white knight than even Luke was will end up killing Kylo. I personally hope Kylo die but if he does that means Rey actually fails at something in life for once, but also there's the fact Kylo will be the last Skywalker and I doubt disney has the balls to kill off the Skywalker bloodline.
@bjrnhalfhand22586 жыл бұрын
micman963 there's only so many places to take it. Either Rey kills him, turns him (and lives) or turns him (and he dies a la Vader). Of course Snoke is dead so he can't die the same way that Vader did. Unless Snoke isn't really dead. Either way I don't particularly care tbh.

People say TFA was a copy of IV but it was still good and people loved it when it first came out. JJ is a big fan of star wars so I know he wants to prove himself with episode 9 but tbh I think you’re right not because he isn’t good but because the reaction to the last Jedi. Disney is definitely wondering if they made the right choice with this movie. They might feel like they have to do something more generic and less risky to keep the Star Wars is dead narrative away. Hopefully jj can fix some of the stupid shit in last Jedi with the next movie

You have some interesting ideas on how Rose's character arc should be. My version if anyone care to read: - Rose and Finn's opposing views should be the point of why they're paired together. Rose come from a long line of rebel fighters who would put down their lives to the cause, as with her sister. Finn on the other hand had enough of fanaticism and while he care about others he's driven mostly by self preservation. - Yes, Rose should be the hacker. But in order to disable the tracking device first she need to get the access code on the casino planet so they can sneak into Snoke's ship and disable it from there. Finn grudgingly agreed to come along because he still wants Rey to live. There Rose told her about her background and the reason why the rebel cause means something very important to her and her family. - The code is in the possession of a bigwig businessman (Del Toro) who only agreed to give them the code at gunpoint. Rose hacked into the bigwig's files and found the shady business side of how the resistance got their ordnance. Her ideals shattered. Both sides seem to help these rich, fat a-holes profit from war. Her sister's sacrifice seem trivial now. - Finn empathizes with this, and watching child slavery on the casino planet stir him inside because he was basically a child soldier and former slave of The First Order. His resolution changes to really want to help the rebellion. - They managed to sneak inside Snoke's ship. But they got caught because Rose had second thoughts about disabling the tracking device. If the rebellion is destroyed at least the war ends, right? No more seemingly needless sacrifices to be made. - As they are about to meet their end, Finn gave a touching speech to his former stormtrooper comrades. "Hey, my name in Finn. Get that? I HAVE A NAME NOW! You can have names too! I never betrayed you guys, i just don't want to live my whole life as a number!" This moved some of the Stormtroopers and they decided to free Finn and flee to the rebel side. Phasma got in the way, of course, but after a few blows she got trapped in the garbage chute. Again. - As they flee to Crait, Finn told Rose her sister's death was not in vain and he thinks that above all else she would want Rose to live. She feels a little better after that. - On the last standoff with the cannon, Finn knew he had to make a sacrifice. Then, Rose saved him in the nick of time. Finn asked why did she do that? She said she don't know, she knew that it's rather selfish of her but after spending time with Finn her gut feelings tell her that living for the cause is as equally important as dying for it. No awkward kiss. Just then, Rey shows up with the Millennium Falcon giving them the clear to go back to base. - So the takeaway is that being utterly selfless and being utterly selfish are both wrong. They both learn that lesson on their whole trip and back.

Meda Purnama I love it. The only thing I would change is the last part. I think it would be better if Finn dies while trying to destroy the cannon. And then have Rose change her mind about war, and she decides to continue fighting in order to honor her sister and Finn's sacrifice.
@MedskiPurnamski6 жыл бұрын
Chris Cerna But wouldn't that make her character go back to square one? Also Finn getting killed would be quite disappointing. I personally prefer that she should be the one who wants to crash herself to the cannon partly out of guilt for screwing up the infiltration mission and Finn is the one who saves her, because it makes more sense. He was the selfish one but he ends up saving someone who he grew to care a lot. She was the self sacrifing one but in the end she decides to choose life over death. You know who needed to die though? Poe.
@nerychristian6 жыл бұрын
Meda Purnama Maybe. I think one of the main characters should have died. So there will be more tension in the movie.
@MedskiPurnamski6 жыл бұрын
Chris Cerna of all the main characters in the movie, Poe makes the most sense to die because he made so many costly mistakes in this movie that no sane admiral should have let him be the one who leads what remains of the rebellion forward. It would be better off for him to be the one who crash the ship to Snoke's vessel as his redemption instead of Holdo. After all according to JJ Abrams he shouldn't have lived through The Force Awakens anyway. And they could still give him an out to appear in Episode 9, just start the movie as a rescue attempt to get Poe out from a First Order gulag where he was captured after miraculously surviving the crash, a throwback to Return of The Jedi.

I don't care about writing 101. A good story has characters that are able to be mature and express their genuine feelings for the one they love. Love triangles are immature and they treat the audience like they are simpletons who are waiting on the edge of their seat trying to guess who he will pick. Romance in a movie only works if it is done intelligently.

My problems with Rose, aside from her initial embarrassing weeaboo screamer-esque moment meeting Finn, is that her crashing into Finn is not just dumb and damn near counterproductive to what she's trying but means the whole action scene with the speeders was a waste of time and the pilots who died could have lived if everyone just sat and waited it out for Luke and Rey. If she had just bumped his speeder out of the way so hers could go in but she was clever enough to abandon it so only the speeder was lost but the cannon was still unaffected, then the scene would have some reason to exist, the pilots wouldn't have been lost in vain, and her point could be better made since Finn was simply too dumb to at least jump out while trying to send his speeder into the cannon not because he was dumb for trying to be a noble hero. Also, Rose was the one who was going to take out the tracker. The hacker was just to get her in the security door to do so thus I don't think making her also the code breaker would have been that great an idea.
@pleaserewind2956 жыл бұрын
So his character is there to open a door?Yeah, I think we can just cut that and stick with my idea.

It's no different than Bilbo's role of just being the guy to sneak in to grab the Arken Stone and leave while all the Dwarves figure everything else out afterward... :-\ Frankly, I think the plot should have been about Finn and Poe going on a recon mission to see what the First Order was doing to recoup from just having a major setback with the loss of Starkiller Base, Finn would have started during the rescue of Rey this spark of Stormtroopers realizing they could shed their armor and defect like him which grows more and more until Episode IX where whole Star Destroyers are turning on their fleets and flying the Rebel flag. While they learn about the First Order and their weapons and resource dealings, they learn too late that the Resistance is being attacked but ultimately Leia sends everyone off to Crait while she plows the enemy flagship like Holdo. Rey accepts Kylo's offer thinking she could actually fix the First Order and use its might and structure to reattempt to form the decimated New Republic (a Galactic Mulligan if you will) only to find out by IX that Kylo has been corrupting her into a fascist meaning he's broken her and not her fixing him. Maybe Finn could die trying to get through to her and she kills Kylo who is beyond redemption but Ghost Luke keeps her from fully turning now that she's killed in anger rather than vanquished in righteousness. But we're 2 films in and this train is wrecked now.

Rian Johnson said on the Slash Flimcast (maybe somewhere else too, idk) that the very first draft of The Last Jedi had Poe and Finn going together to Canto Bight. He then continued to say that the first draft was bad because Poe and Finn had not way to have play off each other interestingly since there'd be no tension. Personally, I still feel like Rian could have came up with something better than Rose though.
@RealllyGoodGaming6 жыл бұрын
winja2109 It would have been a perfect opportunity for Poe and Finn to continue their bromance! Also give more backstory about them, where’s Poe from? Why did he want to become a pilot. What about Finn; he has one of the most interesting backstories. Stolen as a child to become a first order trooper! In the first draft, there was mention of Finn being recognized by some first order soldiers, saying “FN-2187 right? Never pictured you as officer material.” The draft goes on to say that the troopers pick fun at Finn but it’s all in good humor in order to show that not all the troopers are bad. This already sounds much better than half the resistance dying because Finn and Rose parked on a public beach.
