Why Rs 58,000 cr Musi river redevelopment,Telangana CM Reddy’s signature project,will be a challenge

Redeveloping the Musi riverfront was first mooted in 1908 & pushed mid-1990 onwards, but saw little success due to challenges such as encroachment, fund crunch & inflow of sewage water. With a Congress led government coming to power in the state last December, the new Telangana CM Revanth Reddy has again announced that Musi’s rejuvenation will be one of the signature projects of his government. He has also set a 36 months timeline to complete it. Reddy and his team are already building the tempo. Last week, Telangana finance minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka allocated Rs 1000 crore for the 2024-25 fiscal in the budget for the project.

@@karteekkatta6579 It was CBN who permitted industrial effluents to be disposed into tank bund, there by polluting all down stream. These chemicals mixed into Musi river at Viceroy hotel. KCR had a plan to move all polluted soil from tank bund to Vikarabad but he didn't get environmental permissions. The only solution was to make a mountain in tank bund nd seal it off but even it didnt move any where. He was too busy milking Kaleshwaram project kick back commissions from contractors.

Redevelopment of Musi river front is essential not only to Hyderabad people....its more essential to the Andhra Region. Because, Polluted Musi water is merged in Krishna river at Vadapalli, further the same water is being used for cultivation and drinking water for many Krishna & Guntur dist people and Delta. Which is more dangerous to our soil & Nature. I really appreciate Revanth Reddy sir to taking up to the next level.

On the onset, it's hard to make economic sense and grasp the scale of a river clean up. It's an enormous task and need careful and supporting financial structures to make sense of. Unfortunately, the CM has visited Yamuna, Dubai and London only, all of which are in some ways struggling to do much when it come to rejuvenation. From my records, I think a good place to visit and learn from would be Singapore's Marina Bay river. In the 60s much before Singapore became Singapore, an initiative was drawn for 15 year clean up of the river. Yes 15 years ! and the way its was funded was by beautifying the water front areas and selling that property for a premium when the boom happened to pay off the debt incurred. Such fiscal discipline is rare to come by. Most politicians just give up and let it be after a point. It would require a great deal of determination. Another marquee example would be the clean up of the Sienna in Paris for the Olympics 2024. If the Print can do a report on that ( arguably the most prestigious and esteem ridden project of our current times ) that would be very helpful !

Let’s see if Revanth Reddy can do it or not? KCR completed Kaleshwaram in 3 years and Palamuru - Rangareddy in 7 years, Mission Bhageeratha in 3 years and many other projects in 3 years. I stay in Parvathapur which is adjacent to Musi River which is totally polluted. Musi river is just 300 meters from my house. No one cares. Any rain will inundate our area. Heavy rains in October,2020 submerged 68% of Hyderabad. Water entered our Houses. I lost around Rs.6,00,000/= in this rains. I was paid Rs.10,000/= by the govt.

No one can save Moosi river as entire Hyderabad sewage water and chemical factories outlets directly or indirectly through Hussain Sagar ends up in the river. Earlier also state governments tried to save river but it only benefited contractors. Pharma companies will never adhere to govt guidelines and PCB takes bribes and allows companies to pollute the river. In the name of beautification, govt also started encroaching the river and built walkways which are used by none. Most of the city's surrounding area villages which are next to Moosi river using the same polluted water to grow vegetables 😢

Great, UP Govt could not clean Ganga yet. Musi is the hall mark of old city with its fouling smell. It needs to enforce strict rules for the industrial effluents to treat before leaving into river, controlling old city leather tanneries, and beef industry, constructing water treatment plants etc. If Revanth can make it, it is a great achievement. There will be huge push back form illegal muslim occupants of river banks. KCR may oppose stating the stink is the real heritage of Hyderabad. Let us hope it will take off.

Let me tell you, 1. Musi is smaller than Nala in a few places. 2. For most of the period, there is hardly any water in Musi. I bet, You can cross this river without noticing it. So, riverfront will look deserted without water. 3. It smells. So, cleaning it & stopping sewage water into it, is a big challenge. 4. No benefit to the common people due to this riverfront project, this is just for beautification purpose CM cancelled Airport metro via Gachibowli saying that it's not required. Whereas huge traffic in ORR is already bringing down the speed. Cancelling Metro and doing beautification is utter non-sense decision by Govt
